Preferably something that isnt 100 bones like Sony Vegas. I'm looking to make videos with a rather basic but reliable toolset that isn't as limiting as Windows Live movie maker (lolololol). If you have any suggestions thats less than $50 please do tell.

Blender.

It's mainly an animation & 3D graphics editor, but it has an extremely good video editor. Lots of features and a good amount of addons with an active community. It's free.

Downside: interface & functionality are non-intuitive. Learning curve is steep - patience and some intelligence required.

By far the best free video editor out there IMO.

Fusion, it's free and node based (which is always a plus). Very good performance, good user interface, and a good help file in the program itself.

Can do everything from simple to extremely advanced. There is nothing that comes even close in the free category.

Crack Sony Vegas? It's not difficult. That's what I did...

Blender is some of the best free software anywhere. Pro tip: learn shit as you need it. Don't cover-to-cover a book, you'll never retain it.
