What's the point of "The Grandfather" sword?

Seems like any benefit you get from the deadly strike is overridden by limiting yourself to no more than 80% ias or so.

What builds do people do with it? Or is it a merc weapon?

You can use a single deadly hit that proc something good afterward . Probably something on kill with weapon damage, and make a chain reaction.

I'm going to try it as a merc weapon. But maybe 20pt fortress, spam it, 400% deadly strike? Shower of rocks as a main attack? I think no matter how much you do to get it to work, you'd probably be better off with more ias. I haven't done any dps math behind it or anything, just how I feel.

Most of those stormblast barb videos you keep seeing are using it with eagle or lion stance (eagle has -ias, and lion is pure damage) and keeping their ias around 80-83 I think.

, or at least that's how every single stormblast cheeser runs that spec. Which leaves you 1 hand for a sword.

Not necessarily needing Wizardspike. Some people use that for samael with nephalem spirit because its a ton of free pierce at a boss where you need way way way more damage than usual, but most times they'll double up with grandfather and thunderking.

If that deadly strike works while grandfather is offhand (in case orange text is global mod unlike regular deadly strike), you can also keep it as offhand while using throwing axe.
Small throwing axe only needs around 60 ias to hit 9fpa max speed.
