Are sets just garbage?

When I read through the character guides it seems like there are almost never recommendations to play with the sets, not even as transition gear from TU to SU endgame. I've been collecting sets for a while since they seemed fun, but maybe I should just convert everything to signets and forget about them? :?

Also if that's the case, are the devs going to buff sets or maybe just remove them from the game? Seems so weird to have a huge class of items that aren't in use except as as source for stat points. Even more so since sets require dedication to farm the full complement of items and reduce flexibility since they can't be mixed-and-matched.

Been enjoying MXL for years even back to the Brother Laz days, pretty new to the endgame stuff since haven't really tried it until Sigma, appreciate all the hard work from devs and great tips and tricks from the community. Thanks in advance for any comments!

Can't speak to all Sets, but some are good.

Part of the "problem" with using Sets is more a convenience thing. It's often easier/faster to make an alt gearset rather than farm a full Set. Plus, you're likely to see some End-Game gear drop before you ever complete whatever Set you're looking for anyway. So you may as well use other gear that you can mix-and-match, as you say.

All but a select few. Even the Double MO henchmen set is pretty much obsolete. Geleb's two-piece wombo combo can come in handy but no one wants to use the full set.

Lazarus is still quite viable but most sets are insta-sigs. Its honestly embarassing.

There are sets that are actually obsolete.Tundra Walker is a Barbarian Dual Wield Set for... Blood Hatred. Blood Hatred has been a single-weapon skill for quite a few patches now. I'm sure there are more sets that are intended for builds that can no longer exist or have changed significantly.

I hope Sets get rebalanced. Sigma brought in new Unique modifiers on Sacred Uniques. Bring them to more sets to grant an additional way or two to build a character. Sets can really amp up the skill and itemization creativity (granted, most MXL sets are too bulky for any flexibility at all) if done well.

If you can get a full Set at level 100 then it would be OP (but impossible to get at level 100 because Sets don't drop on Nightmare)

Most Sets are useless (by the time you complete them, you already have much better craft/unique)

Yes. Unless you twink the heck out of a new char with full sets to use immediately after hitting 100, they are, for the most part, useless. It takes quite a while to farm for a full set, and by the time you have the set, you'll most likely find better SUs/SSUs already.

I wish sets could drop earlier (but maybe with weaker stats) to make them more meaningful in midgame.

Some sets are good, for example melee Sorc has a nice set, that you can use even at 120/125 it just depends how strong the character is, for example your character build might be extremely difficult to bring through the 120's so you'll need to farm. But with the you can just trade for items

CLOD had the right set design philosophy, tbh.

MXLS sets are broken.
