I dont think the damage was nerfed as much as it attacks almost twice as slow now.

I think paladin become hard to untwinked so he isn't friendly with newbie . With some early - mid charm and SU , SSU items , good ring + amulet ( from trade ) i still couldn't farm nithilak for sigs . I feel all monster have a huge life .

Just throwing this out there, but couldn't a variant relying on Demiurge with maxed buff% be able to compensate damage wise just with the massive amount of stats and reanimate? Not sure how VoJ's damage is endgame wise but when I played way back it was fairly alright, and couples with Symphony it could help a bit too no?
