Is there a huge difference between single player and multiplayer? Also as a brand new player which would be better for learning this game?

The only reason to play SP in my opinion would be the Shared Stash. But even that is no problem in MP, since you are allowed to multilog and mule items.

As for differences:

Different drop rates.
MP only items.
Good community and people to play with online.
Lots of gameservers around the world, you should have a few with good latency to your location.

Theres probably some stuff that i forgot, but other people can post that if they want to.

there is no "huge" difference per-say but both of them have there on advantages and disadvantages.

Sp have PlugY which allow u to hold infinite items on a single char while on Mp u have to maintain dummy chars to hold the extra items
Sp have virtually no lag while mp have a slight delay and sometimes even big delays.
Sp u play alone which gets boring fast while on mp u play with other people which always adds up the fun
Sp u have to dig into various forum thread and read documentations to learn game while in mp u can just join someone's game and they can show u how ur problem can be solved
Sp have virtually no trading so u have to find every gear by urself while mp have a very active trading system and community
Sp does not receive many of the content that are server exclusive while mp gets all the contents and updates
Sp have a higher drop rate while mp have a comparatively lower drop rate (hence it fuels the tradings)
Sp generally receives much less attention as compared to mp.

i would personally recommend u start on MP as that place never gets boring, u can always make new friends and they would help u along the way in game.

mp can spoil you some fun experience if its your first playthrough and you make public games and others drop strong items or rush you or kill ubers for you while you watch, but if you avoid that from happening then mp is fine

In MP you have so lag, in Destruction level it's sufficient to die instantly. In SP you may use Plugy and multress (big stash, better view of your stats, good resolution). But in future plugy and multiress will became incompatible, so the only diference will be the lag.

Don't forget cool realm-only "gameplay" like this season with powerful rares or previous with "random" monsters in ubers and faster appearing of elites on usual areas. That's more than enough for me to play on realm. The only real problem of realm is sometimes lags and latency that can be fatal to char. In all other aspects playing on realm is much more funny.
