i will agree that hatred didn't need the nerfing into the ground it got, but imo gear checks are much better if they're used on act transitions akin to how act 2 is a gear check for your resistances

act 4 is very elemental damage heavy but i feel that the second half of act 3 is so close to a defense check that it might as well go all the way -- the city of kurast is jam packed with shit thats sole purpose is to slow you down and beat the pulp out of you, and the durance of hate's final level has two sub bosses that you need reasonable defense for (since one has a melee only aura and the other will stunlock you)

you don't really need good defense for TA anyways, as long as you know how to micro/kite effectively and have a decent AoE source of damage you're likely able to handle everyone that isn't a priestess. again, it's a bummer to be railroaded into the same area over and over again because the rest of the game is balanced around having completed a supposed 'challenge'

having micro skills is player dependent and having a good, reliable AoE you can cast from a distance that's strong enough early in the game to clear TA is build-dependent, though, and that's where we run into what im griping about: builds that are otherwise fine being rendered something you have to belladonna into because you can't clear TA with them

Or just hire a mercenary and skip the respec. That's why they're in the game. To help balance out the areas of damage and defense that you can't handle with your build.

And to be fair, Tetris is hard to beat for someone who has never heard of or seen how to do it. Give them a minute or a couple attempts and they'll learn.

'bloodmage is OP' is not a good explanation as to why level challenges are fine, lol

idk what ur tetris comparison has to do with my main thesis of 'balancing around having completed a challenge makes the challenge into mandatory railroading'

Bloodmage is trash in comparison to act 2 shapeshifter with tu trident and heavy gloves or abjurer. It's not an argument about how strong the merc is. It's an argument to prove that your point about having to respec is trash because that's why mercs exist in the game.

The point is the level requirement isn't an issue. If there's no level requirement, then what stops people from just getting 120 and casually going back to hatred to walk through an area and not take a single tick of damage?

It's been discussed many times before. LC1 was already changed to put them all at Lvl 50, and even that is more than enough farming for uniques and progressing to make it any concern at all.

As for the Tetris part, it's a pretty simple relation... Give someone who's never played or seen Tetris, a game of Tetris. They fail once or twice and figure out how to complete it. Give a new MXL player the level challenge, they fail once or twice, they read or ask a question or just learn how to not stand in a stream of arrows, and they learn how to complete it.

The whole issue about the level challenge is that when new players see "maximum level 50 for this challenge", they immediately think, "I need to be level 50 and overprepare for this upcoming hard task." That's why progression stops. Once they do it a time or two, they realize that all that over prep isn't so necessary and they can play the game normally from now on without having to spend so much time preparing just to backtrack to complete the challenge.

If you're playing on hardcore, then I can understand.
