I would not mind to see posts structures like this two examples:
1
► Show Spoiler

2
► Show Spoiler

Btw this is just me messing around with paint, just sharing a couple of opinions. Anyway in the second case it would slim up short posts only if the person who post them has an avatar.

Those designs are kind of awkward in my opinion. First of all moving the information that is in this place, under the avatar, on 99.9% of other forums just to save on what 50 pixels of vertical space? Also wouldn't the bottom section still be a floating element and look awkward with signatures?

everything can be better... by no means I was thinking about those as finite solutions or any of that sort, but just as a starting point or (if you prefer) a random user's opinion. Not sure If I've understood what you're saying about the vertical space, but I think that if the goal is to save space then 50px or 1px are/is still better than nothing in the end. Imho the best tools to save space (other than relocating some interface) are hoovering information boxes or dropping menus.

Those are just simple mock-ups :) The information displayed under the avatar isn't really like that on all forums. A lot of times it's displayed at the right of the avatar. Like this:

That way, short posts will look much better. Having less width in post content isn't actually a drawback imo, it makes long sentences more confortable to read.

As first impression the only "drawback" I potentially could see is that in this way sliders will be much more common if an image or a video is shared. For pics it's fine but can be complicated if a video doesn't fits in the right space (but it would be pretty difficult for this to happens)

Okay that mock up does look like the best white space efficiency. It will probably cause increased scrolling for low resolution & mobile users however, but it should not be too bad unless you are reading guides or other long posts in succession (like mxl2016 thread).

Well, that mockup isn't directed towards mobile. The idea is to keep mobile layout as it is currently.

Also it's important to take into account that this forum is really wide compared to other forums. Default phpBB forums are fixed 800px wide (for example: phpBB official forums). This one is modified to use a % of screen instead. Of course long posts will require more scrolling, but it will still require less scrolling compared to the average forum.
