Private means just what is says, private. So let's disregard that.
As for Alpha and non alpha.
Alpha testing is usually some of the first testing done, with an early version of the software.
After a period of alpha testing, the software should have evolved a bit, and then it can go into beta testing. (Which i assume this is, even though Marco didn't say it)
So it's basically just different phases of testing/developing.
Please note that I'm not a software dev or anything of the sort, so this is just how i understood it by hearing about it over the years.

When you put it that way... I guess it was kinda a redundant question. ^^;
However I was mainly curious if they are going to be asking for a larger testing group, or if by private they mean moderators only and not the community. Either way "Stay tuned" I shall. Great work Marco & Friends.

Well the testing phase here went like this:
1. Ultra-super-private-testing : this was not even really testing, it was more of marco/sb doing changes and seeing the ingame effect of it and skimming through any other changes to check if anything is causing a crash or not...
2. Private alpha testing : this phase started when marco/sb finally were done with 90% of the changes and now needed a more thorough testing, so a group of people were selected by the team to test the full game by playing from scratch on sp. Testers report abnormalities and bugs and they r fixed and retested and repeat until most of the bugs r gone. (2017 patch is in this phase currently)
3. Public beta : patch is released to the public and mass level testing is done.
4th and further steps doesn't really matter since people already get the patch so woo hooo
