Rule of thumb for A2 or A5 even A1 (if u even use a1) merc to survive any situation is that they need as close to 50% dr as possible, capped resistances/some max resistances and most importantly a source of some lifesteal. As long as they are hitting stuff, they will never die. To further enhance your merc you can mo Uninteruptable Attack on all pieces of armour.

The rest of the items don't matter much (not including weapons since I already covered it a few posts ago). You can probably craft everything at first and transition. Probably a lot more ways to build your merc this is just the way I do it.
