is there any kind of trick for getting a good traders chest roll? do higher tier gems (perfect/flawless) yield better results? or is it purely luck?

also, is there a listing of which gems do what exactly? I can't find that in the new docs. It used to be there before last patch i think

No, the gem changes to chipped after one roll. It doesn't make a difference what quality the gem is. Only the gem itself matters.

So what exactly is the point of that charm then? In what way is clicking that cube-button until you get an acceptable roll fun?
All the other uberquest stuff is fun. Doing them a bunch of times to get good rolls and trophies is challenging. It encourages creating chararacters that actually are good at doing the quests, instead of just throwing your corpse at the boss for 5-20 minutes to get one charm.
But you only have to get this charm once and then you just click away at that cube-button. What was Laz'/Marcos reasoning behind that?

Edit:
For example: If the charm would just drop with random stats (identical to 50 random rolls of the current system) there would at least be the challenge of having to kill the boss for every roll.

You can only use the Mystic Shard after you hit 50th roll and don't reset it. If you reset it back to zero rolls, the Mystic Shard upgrade will destroy the charm. You have to get a new one each time until you're satisfied with the roll to attempt the upgrade.

ah right, forgot about the no-reset condition.
Why is none of this information in the docs on the main-website? Which Gems do what and the no-reset condition for the Mystic Shard upgrade. Especially the no-reset-condition should be in there I think. I would have blindly wasted my Mytic Shard on a rerolled chest because it doesn't say anything about that on there.
