magic find doesn't influence the rarities in bases, all it does is make items which can be magical (read: not runes) have a higher chance to roll as magic or higher

There is a steep diminishing returns towards Set and Unique above about 200% MF and it's up to you to decide.

I'd say that you should ALWAYS have at least 200% MF equipped. This is a bare minimum. 300 is okay, pushing to 400 is questionable benefit.
You need to wager your clear times to assess this. Pushing high MF at the expense of kill speed isn't worth it above 300/400% MF on your gear.
If you happen to roll high MF on a crafted item that's good for you anyway, then be my guest.
But don't make it your primary target in crafting stuff for example.
