Characters from two seasons ago are deleted?

Logged in today and noticed my characters from two seasons ago are all deleted on my main account, but the mules I created for them are not...

Any ideas what happened here?

Characters that are not logged in for 6 months are automatically deleted.

Good idea,
in-game indicator is unreal, but I'll prepare a script to send bnet mail (/mail command - and that will also notify you on e-mail if that account has it set) 30 days ahead

Retail D2 had expiration timers on both new characters but also on "permanent" characters, is this a feature that has been removed in Median?

we don't use built-in expire function - I can't remember why, but I think there was some problem with that...

Does anyone know if, to "renew" a character so it doesn't get deleted, you merely have to activate that character from the account screen and take it into the screen where you can enter chat, set up a game, etc. (but not enter a game)... or do you have to have that character actually set up and / or enter a game?

I am doing the latter now because I'm paranoid about my mules, but it would be helpful to know if the former method (which is easier and faster) achieves the same result.
