Introduction

Do you like melee builds? Do you like bashing mob's heads in with your mighty Hand of God? Do you enjoy an engaging, fast and powerful playstyle? Look no further than the Holy Melee Paladin. A very tanky and powerful build that focuses on pure Physical Damage for single target, augmented with a lot of Poison Damage for AoE clear and strong Cooldowns. A relatively hard build to play but rewarding once you get the hang of it. Guaranteed to lay waste to even the strongest of foes (Except Samael but that's work in progress). Lets start with some Pro's and Con's.

Pro's & Con's


Pro's:
    •Very good single target damage
    •High mobility due to 3s CD Blink ability and 5s or less CD offensive blink in the form of Colosseum
    •High survivability due to High Physical Resistance, flat Damage Reduction, a lot of Life Leech and Sacred Armor
    •Can do almost all game content with minimal respec
    •Has access to very tanky summons (Hoplites)
    •Decent AoE damage
    •Can be good starting build if you dont mind the skill switching

Con's:
    •Requires a lot of skill switching
    •Is very squishy until you get Blessed Life at level 115
    •Some encounters need a source of slow in order to be done easily (Kabraxis, Astrogha)
    •Not the best farming build, can respec to Vesseldin for faster farming.


Stat distribution

Strength: MAX
Dexterity: 0
Vitality: 0
Energy: 0

In theory you should max Strength. We are aiming for max Physical Damage stacking with this build through the use of a 2-hander (Hand of God), items that give flat Strength and percent Strength, flat Physical damage and Deadly Strike. We dont need dexterity in the late game because Incarnation gives us all the flat Attack Rating we need.
That being said, if you re having trouble with the early to mid game content you can go for something like this instead:

Strength: Just enough for gear
Dexterity: Just enough to get to over 85% chance to hit with Incarnation up
Vitality: Rest of points
Energy: 0

Once you get Blessed Life at level 115 you should respec back to full Strength.

Skill Build

-max Dragonheart, Plague and Blessed Life
-put 6 points into Divine Judgement to remove the cooldown.
-put 5 points into Colosseum for some CD reduction and 10 points into Rapture. You can put some extra points if you need help reaching your attack speed and hit recovery frames.
-put between 7 and 12 points into Incarnation depending on whether you need more Life Steal and Attack Rating.
-put between 5 and 10 points into Sacred Armor for a really good defensive buff.
-put 1 point into everything else, including the spells.
-rest of the points go into Dragonknight for more stats or Incarnation for more leech and Attack rating.

This will, more or less, be your skill plan for the entire game. You can drop the points from Incarnation in the really end-game because you wont need the extra Attack rating and Life steal.

How to play

As I said earlier Holy melee Paladin requires some skill swapping to play at peak efficiency.
That being said here is your skill rotation:
- buff up with:
    •Vessel of Retribution
    •Dragonknight
    •Dragonheart
    •Rapture

    (do not use Vessel of Retribution after getting into endgame content 120+ because it will hinder you against blink when struck bosses)
- precast Solar Flare before engaging any mobs, also keep recasting every 10 seconds for the Incarnation attack rating, life leech and spell damage buff.
- same thing for the Vindicate buff but only once every 30 seconds.
- almost always engage your target/targets with Colosseum for the speed, -phys res and -defense debuff, also a great room clearer since it hits almost every mob on the screen and knocks them back while also inflicting Plague.
- if you're facing more mobs than you can reliably hit with Divine Judgement use Retaliate, otherwise Divine Judgement all the way.
- if you're having trouble surviving also try and keep up 5 Hoplites. They are very tanky and can self heal and also plague mobs.
- dont forget about Sacred Armour, it will help a lot in the mid game boss encounters. Cast it before engaging bosses or big packs of mobs.

and some other leveling gear but it's not really necessary.

When you get to Act 3 Nightmare you'll want to switch to a Abjurer or a Bloodmage. (When you get to a high enough level, go back on Normal difficulty and rerecruit your merc there because it has better stats, don't forget to take off his gear first)
As for gearing them you'll want to pick up a piece of Rare Sacred Gloves,Boots,Body armor,Helm, Sword, Belt and Shield and craft them with Fascinating Shrines for Bloodmage or Ornate Shrines for Abjurer for as much Fire spell dmg and -Fire res and Lightning spell dmg and -Lightning res respectively.
Socket the gear with Ral Runes for Bloodmage and Ort Runes for Abjurer. MO all the pieces with Fire or Lightning damage. Give them a good caster amy aswell. +3/4 skills faster casting and/or -Fire or -Lighting res. If you really want to min-max your caster merc you can socket his gear with crafted Zod Jewels for as much spell dmg, energy, percent energy and spell factor as possible.

If you have the gold to spare MO your gear with flat Strength and your weapon with 2 Mana on attack and 2 %Mana steal MO's to solve your early mana problems. Also you want to socket your weapon with either Rubies for life after kill or Amethyst's if you find that the attack rating from Solar Flare passive is not enough. That is also the case for weapon MO's.
You will use up the MO space on Rings and Ammy for missing resistances, also you want to fill your sockets with +res gems or Ko runes.
You can try either weapons and see what works for you but I would recommend the Hand of God.
Also try to pick up every Apple you see, they will get better with each Blessed Life level.

The set can be used to clear pretty much most of the content, despite it being a mid game option. I reserved the end game items for best in slot or close to it.

At this point you will want to start jewelcrafting. I personally recommend you craft them with a Lem rune because the flat stats scale really well with Dragonknight.
You want to get on those jewels:
    •% all attributes or % strength
    •flat life
    •%Attack Rating
    •either Increased Attack Speed or Faster Hit Recovery.
Because of Dragonknight and Rapture you will cap your frames in no time so use SpeedCalc and D2Stats to know whether you need more speed stats or not.
You can get +all stats on top of the already crafted stats which is really good. Also remember to lucky oil all your jewels for that extra tryhard points.

Another point I want to make is since we have 3+ runewords it's important to get the best basses and roll them before crafting them. We want as much flat defense off of gear as possible.

Use 2 Mana on attack and 2 mana steal MO's on your weapon and that should be enough. Gonna add this real quick to the guide.

hi Bojac. Iam patiently waiting for pesty necro guide. since resists in sigma were almost removed it will be OP. In 1.3 patch i had over 200000 damage on pesty only.

I will have to roll a necro for that which i will probably do next week or at most 2 weeks. Gonna start working soon and i wont have so much time for median anymore. :(

Hey, nice guide! Any tips where to farm a sacred hand of god? I tried different lvl 120 and 125 regions but only got a tier 2 hand of god :/
