Introduction
I decided to present a different type of guide. In a Solo Self-Found run, one cannot anticipate which items will be found. It's therefore important to plan for all eventualities and make do with what drops.

    I will do three things in this guide:
    • Provide a chronological progression milestone list to assure the smoothest progression throughout your journey.
    • Present videos for each Uberquest, including the hardest ones.
    • Lay out loads of gear suggestions that are upgrades to an easy-to-get basic item setup.

    Why Bowzon?
    • It's a very simple and easy-to-play build for newcomers.
    • Even with budget items, Bowzons are among the best farmers in the game. Being a good farmer allows you to gear up easily for harder uber content.
    • Bowzons are also decent at bossing. You'll be able to grab most charms without any outside help. I completed all Ubers except 2.

Quick Tips
Before you start:
  • If you plan to play SSF, be aware that Multiplayer has a lower chance to roll Uniques. Therefore, gearing up takes longer.

  • If you are a new player, I highly recommend you follow the Milestone section to the letter. It's foolproof and specifically designed to take you by the hand and have you progress as far as possible. Diverge at your own risk.

  • Pickup all uniques you find to disenchant. They're used to uptier/create uniques (lottery rolls), to shrine bless crafts, for jewelcrafting and opening high Lab portals.

  • Use D2Stats for the drop notifier and stats reading. Here's a basic script you can edit to your liking: (simply copy/paste into program Notifier tab)

Playthrough tips:
  • Pick up Bloodstone/Onyx/Amber/Turquoise gems in the early game for armor sockets, resists are very important.

  • Mercenaries: aren't that useful early game since you'll die a lot. I only hire them at lvl 140 to help with speed runs. Saving Ornate shrines and keeping an eye out for Abjurer gear is a small price to pay for faster Fauzt runs. Alternatively you can opt for a Shapeshifter as a high labs tank.

  • Limit attribute points spent into str. Stick with low requirement bases and maximize dex. As you reach midgame, you'll rely on str given from charms to equip sacred items.

  • Always rerun ubers for high or perfect charm rolls. Newer players often omit doing this. These stats add up and make up a significant part of your dmg and survivability. Especially considering there are more than 40 uber charms.

Troubleshooting: (middle game)
  • My dmg is low, why?
    • Did you MO all your item slots up to your level?
    • Do you have perfect amethysts on all your armor slots?
    • Do you have a crafted weapon with 200ed and 300max?
    • Did you consume 400 sigs?
    • Did you spend all your base attribute points in dex?
    • Do you proc on-kill Bloodlust with weapon swap?
    • Did you gather all uber charms up to your level?
    • Did you rerun ubers for high or perfect roll charms? ← Most people omit this; they shouldn't.
      If you answered yes to all, you simply need better gear. Check the Item Upgrades section and farm Duncraig.
  • Why do you MO str in your build?
      A lot of good sacred items require above 550 str to wear. Str given from charms, MO's and gear are attribute points you save that go in dex. So in a way, 1 str = 1 dex (until you have enough str to equip everything).
  • What do I MO my gear with?
    • Weapons: inti/aban bless+luck first → %ed to 196 → ewd → ds → max (In doubt, use a dmg calculator).
    • Armor: max → dex. Bless with aban.
    • Rings/Amulet/Quivers: Psn length reduction → rest open for when resists are needed.
  • Is an elemental build (Stag Bow) good?
      I've seen it work, but only when super geared. It isn't a SSF-friendly as it's very item dependant. I tried to make it work, but the dmg and sustain simply isn't there.
  • How much mf should I have?
      As a general rule, killspeed is always preferable to mf. Through many farming runs, I've found that 200-250mf is a excellent and easy number to reach. Mf above that number has big diminishing returns, see data below. Upon reaching 200-250 mf, I focus on dmg and ms for faster runs.

Location: Act 1 Tristram inside western House (lvl 105)

Strategy: Spellbind → Barrage while kiting him in circle. Things go bad if he hits you.

Strategy: Stay mobile → kill adds with Wyrmshot/Phalanx.When things are manageable, kill Machine with Phalanx. Rerun for 15allres.

Location: Act 2 Rocky Waste Stony Tomb lvl 2 kill Grubber portal (lvl 105)

Strategy: Invisible enemies → Lead with Wyrmshot. Spellbind bosses → Kill with Phalanx/Barrage. Runs get easier as you get more MO's. Best place to farm gold. Rerun for high res charm.

Strategy: Kill adds with Wyrmshot. Against boss → Use Barrage if Stone Skin, use Phalanx if Magic Resistant. Rerun for 20%aa charm.

Strategy: Progress slowly → Kill everything with Phalanx. Annoying, but you only need to run him once (important charm for its teleport). Allows you to ditch "nef" staff for bloodlust buffs.

Strategy: Aim for a nice Phalanx angle to race his healing. Becomes trivial as you get more gear.

Location: Act 1 grab leg in Tristram cube leg in Town portal kill Cow King cube other leg in Cow level portal (lvl 115)

Strategy: Spellbind and kill with Phalanx/Barrage. Stay close to walls to not get hit by exploding cows. You can enter red portal to dodge chicken attack. Rerun for 60str+dex.

Location: Act 1 south of Rogue Encampment Bramwell (lvl 115) north

Strategy: Get in fire circle to dmg boss → Leave circle when swarmed. Clear with Phalanx.

Strategy: Cast summons before you enter portal. Kill orb with Phalanx as soon as you enter → Clear everything with Phalanx.

Strategy: Dodge things at your feet → Kill everything with Phalanx. Phalanx can cc Bartuc → Don't stunlock him, else he remains invulnerable. Rerun for 5%ls.

Strategy: Kill Crawlers with Wyrmshot → Phalanx/Barrage boss. There's no hurry, you can do it in several tries.

Strategy: Phalanx/Wyrmshot everything. Be mindful of Arrowside death procs. Rerun for a 15%hp charm.

Strategy: Start with Imperius and take your time → Kill bosses with Phalanx → Wyrmshot if bad Phalanx angle.

Duncraig (Dunc)
Location: Act 1 south of Rogue Encampment Bramwell (lvl 115) north-most entrance (lvl 120) reach next entrance (grab wp)

Strategy: Wyrmshot everything. Cube 5 boss sigils with Ring of the Five (dunc drop). Use its Purify oskill to kill Assur. Duncraig is the best place for SU's and SSU’s. Good experience as well up to lvl 135. is worth getting (10speeds).

Location: Act 1 Bramwell head north to kill boss portal (lvl 120)

Strategy: Very easy for bowzon. Stay half a screen away → Run off when boss releases the slow moving things around him → Kill with Spellbind and Phalanx/Barrage.

Strategy: Equip as much max resist as you can. Dodge beam laterally and cast Phalanx.

Strategy: Grab Tome of Possession → Lure Lucion to Malic → Possess Lucion repetitively to have Malic kill him. Make a 22speeds charm → Leftover space with dex. Return later to cycle charm up to lvl 140. Keep the frags and empty charms for trophy to upgrade Sleep charm.

Strategy:Spellbind boss → Phalanx whole screen. You'll die a bunch, but that's okay. Rerun for a 400hp charm. Pick up the Jitan charms while you rerun Astro for future amulet lotteries.

Strategy: Belial is a very small and very fast moving rat. He doesn't look like his human-form clones. Stack 300+ fire res → Spam Phalanx at the small rat and stay mobile. Rerun for a 400+ hp charm.

Strategy: Start slow by casting a minion in front of you to bait teleports. When at long corridor → Stop casting minions and Wyrmshot every meter on your way to the boss. That place is merely a gear check (dmg, leech and pr). Rerun until 625+ hp charm.

Maze → Takes 30-60 mins to gather the set, but you only have to run the maze once.
Boss → Arcane Blast to clear trash, Holybolt to dmg boss. Always leave a handful of mobs alive and dodge things. Rerun boss for a +1sk, 15allres charm.

Fauztinville (Fauzt)

Strategy: Difficult to grind efficiently. The best way to clear on budget gear is to have reanimates (Scarab ammy, perf Amber in weap, TU Chain Mail, SU Quilted, SU Skull Cap). I recommend 17k hp and 50pr for efficient runs under 6 mins. Fauzt is only good for jewelry and experience up to lvl 140. If you just want SSU's, you're better off in Dunc. Fauzt farming route here.




Uldyssian
Location: Act 4 Silver City portal next to Halbu follow path to Spire 2 portal north-most portal (lvl 130)

Strategy: Equip pr → Spellbind+Phalanx and dodge things. Rerun for a +2sk charm.

Strategy: Easier when you get additional Edyrem tankiness from Uldy charm. Run south quickly → Clear room → Progress slowly to Lilith. Use Phalanx to cc mobs while your Edyrems position themselves. Only have to succeed once.

Strategy: Purify fight. Respec into full vitality and swap armor gems to perfect Rubies. Use 6sockets scepter, 6sockets shield and 4sockets boots for more hp from Paragon. The fight itself is simple: Dodge things → Purify/Spellbind on cooldown → Run off to refill belt with pots from inventory. Upgrade charm with Duncraig (60ewd) or Triune (15%aa, 45dmg) trophy.

Strategy: The first uber requiring effort. Equip high pr and dmg. Kite around untargetable minions on a big platform while spamming Phalanx/Spellbind at boss. Purify Harvesters as soon as they spawn. When you die, just go back in TP at entrance and run back. It will take a couple of tries to get used to it.

The Void
Location: Act 4 Silver City north of Library of Fate Cathedral Kill boss Portal (130)

Strategy:
Sloth: Rekill until scroll drop, dodge death proc by side movement.
Glutony: Spellbind and Phalanx.
Greed: Phalanx from top-left stairs.
Lust: Phalanx everything.
Wrath: Get 50pr and use shield to survive him; He’ll kill himself. Leech off Darkwraiths with Phalanx.
Envy: Phalanx everything.
Pride: Boss loses hp from his summons’ atks. Summon stuff to tank. Kill adds when there’s too much.

Inarius & Lilith:
Sequence: bring Lilith to center → When she Blood Pools, chase her away → Teleport behind pool → Cast summons in the pool to keep Inarius still → dmg him with Phalanx → Repeat.

General tips: Don’t War Spirit | Spellbind Inarius | Walk over ice balls near Lilith | Only commit on the well set-up Blood Baths.

Brother Laz
Location: Act 3 Frayer Jungle Swampy Pit lvl 3 north-east of Vizjun Portal (130) [map here]

Strategy: This is a space management uber. The idea is to keep Laz inside the big room and use the narrow corridor to clear the opposide side, where Laz isn’t. This uber is all about experience. It will take many practice runs just to get a good grasp on what to do and not do. You only need to succeed twice: one for the charm and the other for Samael key.

Sequence: Let Laz stomp you → Slowly run away while purifying him → Lead him to empty areas → When big room is near full of adds, break chase (teleport away when Laz is almost out of your screen) → Use corridor to go to other side of big room → Clear adds with Wyrmshot → Repeat.

    Set: strong set and somewhat common. It takes several SU's to dethrone it. However, it has 3 main problems:
    • Trinity proc prevents you from casting skills. This can kill you in a densely packed area.
    • The set locks you into using 4 items. Finding a good item will probably not be enough to be worth not using the set.
    • The set has low life leech.
    I tried it for a long while and found I prefered using crafts and uniques; smoother character gear progression. But I highly suggest trying it for yourself and seeing what you prefer.


The following items are listed from weakest to strongest

MAIN WEAPON


  • Craft (sacred Reflex Bow)
      Crafted bows will follow you the entire game. Your first craft will kickstart your build into the mid game. As you roll more bows on the side, you'll find amazing ones that beat every other bow in the game for the lategame, including a perfectly rolled
      Ice Breaker (Xis)
      .

      How to craft:
      After finding your first sacred Reflex Bow (around lvl 100-120), imbue it by Charsi (character has to be lvl 99+) and roll the rare with shrines until you find a craft with 165-200ed and 250-300dmg. It can be a mix of min and max dmg together, it makes no difference. These bows are typically called "200-300s" (for 200ed-300dmg). These affixes roll together once every ~30 full shrines, so expect to need several hundred rolls per bow. Ideally, you want to craft with Intimidating shrines, but realistically you should dump every single shrines (except aban/ornate) you find into a reflex bow. Keep spare bows for future shrines. Aban shrines are best used on armor pieces and ornate will be used for lategame merc gear. The bow stats you're after are part of a common pool of affixes; the shrine bonuses are very minor. Here is a couple of examples of bad/decent/excellent bows rolls.

      Relevant affixes: 200ed, 320max, 120min, 15%ls, 30slow, 60mf, 15%dex, 60dex, on strike arrow/knife/time strike.

      Bow upgrades:
        1) Cube bow with Oil of Luck.
        2) Bless with: Abandonned if bow has 200ed, Intimidating if under 200ed.
        3) If bow still isn't at 200ed, MO 15ed until 196ed (continue at 195ed, stop at 196ed).
        4) MO 12ewd (5x).
        5) MO 1ds (5x). Careful, don't MO over your character's level.
        6) MO max dmg (rest).
        7) Put in 6x Perfect Skulls.


QUIVER


  • Magic
      This will last you until you find a nice rare with life leech that beats it. Buy a bunch of ilvl99 quivers, and oil of enhancement them until you roll 10-15%ls. Life stolen is very important for bowzon. Rare quivers are plentiful so it will not that take long, but this magical piece only requires gold, which you'll have plenty of anyways when farming IotSS around lvl 110-115.

It can be any unique quiver to be honest, the important part is the 50mf. It is where you will use all your AC's after Ripstars. Plenty of MO space, but jewelry/quiver MO’s aren't really exciting. I just MO mf and plr and leave the rest open for when I need resists.

  • Rare
      Relevant affixes: 15%ls, 25min, 30max, 25%ias, 30dex, cryo beam/sunstrike on striking.
      Excellent potential rolls. Cryo beam shoots a fast moving lazer that pierces and freezes enemies (cc proc). Sunstrike is a 0.85 wdm scaling skill that converts all dmg into fire (dmg proc). In my opinion, 15%ls + 1 affix or any 3-4 affixes will beat all other quivers for bossing, including SU’s. Keep an eye out for Tantrum oskill, because

      Equip this setup as soon as you grab Jitan charm (before then, you need the "nef" staff for the teleport). Cast 2-3 Wyrmshots/Phalanx with bow out, and swap to your Mace as enemies start dying.

      In theory, this piece sounds very worthy to craft since it can roll insane things, but %dex affix is very rare. Find a decent placeholder with ias, and move on to using aban shrines on gloves/belts/chest. Return to helm crafting when you have good gloves/belt/chest. If you can get your hands on a dex% and max dmg roll, it will be similar to Asgard and Rygnar in terms of dmg.

Bowzon needs 117fcr to reach max cast speed (8 frames): 50 ammy, 35 charms, 10 dunc (easy to get), and the other 25 you get from this armor.

  • Abandonned Craft (Quilted Armor)

      I suggest saving your aban shrines for other pieces first (craft chest once you already have decent gloves/belt and an okay helm). Contrary to zon helms, %dex and %aa rolls are very common on body armors. Early, settle for something that rolled %dex and mf (2 affixes), and swap armor to a better roll with %dex, dex and mf (3 affixes). Keep in mind that the aban shrine bonus on body armors rolls up to 12% dex, not 8% like other armor pieces. You can go up to 39%dex with affix+aban+bless. Such a craft with high dex will last you a while.

Tantrum is an oskill that is similar to Barrage, but shorter ranged, lasts longer and hits more time per second. The skill itself isn't good, but the active time is 3-6 seconds depending on its lvl. Tantrum oskill can spawn on crafted bows (+18 to 26), rare quivers (+9 to 13) and relics (+6 to 11). Ideally, you would want the oskill on both your rare quiver and on a crafted 200-300 bow (3 affixes, very rare), so keep an eye out for them during your playthrough. If by some miracle you find both those pieces, Petulant becomes BiS for bossing. Alternatively, you could use
      Amok (Xis)
      on your alt weapon: swap, cast Tantrum, swap back and shoot. However, you lose valuable uptime doing that (especially with online lag), time you would otherwise spent casting more stuff.

It's a moot debate to have though, because both armors are very rare. Use whichever you find or prefer.



GLOVES

      Burning Veil is a large fire wall that gives you 89ewd for 60 secs when you pass through it. Try to find a pair with ias and 2 other relevant affix. Otherwise, I doubt it's worth replacing the Honorific. Aban crafted gloves can potentially be BiS if you roll 3-4 good affixes and high %dex on the aban rolls, but it would require a lot of shrines. Hammerfists are very hard to beat in terms of dmg and are very common. When Hammerfist drops, forget crafting gloves and switch to using most of your aban shrines to some other slot that needs upgrading.

      Nothing really exciting here, but it will still beat all other belts beside SSU's in terms of dmg. I would settle on one that rolls at least 14%dex and 50 dex on base roll (bless included). Such a belt is very easy to roll. That said, it's worth it to spend a bunch of aban shrines here for a better roll, because the only better dmg belt is Black Void. All others are either for speeds or tankiness.

      Requires a Xis rune and gives a flat 50mf. Its purpose is just to increase your drop quality without sacrificing too much dmg. Belts are only 2os, so you don't lose too much from the loss of 2 amethysts. Use a "ber" crafted jewel with 15ias and at least one of those affixes: %aa/%dex/dex/str/min dmg/max dmg/hp. This runeword will be used to farm until you find a Lilith's (a somewhat common piece).

  • Rare
      Relevant affixes: 25ias, 25min, 30max, 40aa, 30dex, 20fcr, lightning arena oskill, banish/doom proc.
      Doom adds ~150 phys dmg to every wdm source. Banish adds bonus rainbow dmg on top of your own. Keep picking rare ammys up in hopes of finding a good one with 4 or more good affixes. Note: +skill will only help Paragon (~125hp per sk) and Spellbind duration. It will not help anything else in any relevant manner. All-skills is useable, but it's not an important affix to get on bowzons.

  • Khanduran Royal Pendant

      Just a "prebuff" ammy after respecs to push your maxed skills a bit further (allows you to get +1 target from Wyrmshot, yay!). Keep in stash. It's a very rare amulet.

This guide is amazing, but I notice you didn't actually talk about the skill points except for recommendations for specific ubers. During normal farming, do you just spam Wyrmshot? Do you recommend having a separate spec for high level farming after bosses are done?

I like simplicity. I use the same skill point allocation for farming and for bossing. Bowzons aren't really starved for skill points, so there's no real big sacrifice.


However the skill I use depends on the mob type. Wyrmshot for farming trash (squishy monsters), Phalanx/Barrage/Trinity for single-target (tanky bosses).
