Note that you need to 1 point into Apprenticeship before you can allocate Fireheart for the first couple of levels.

Stormeye totem got a huge buff and is now our #1 farming tool for endgame. It casts a spell called Stormcall, which does more damage the closer the totem is to the target, so please keep that in mind. Though Fireheart was buffed slightly, it needs a lot more gear to farm comfortably; hence I suggest we focus on Stormeye, as the gear requirements are nowhere near to that of Fireheart.



Patch 1.7



Frostclaw got a huge buff and is probably now better than Fireheart, for at least early and midgame. Also provides huge bossing capability over Fireheart, due to big hits less often.
Totems finally got some resistances, which is a huge deal for their tankiness
Totems now cost more mana, which makes dying and creating a new game somewhat a pain, even with the mana regen from Embalming. I strongly suggest you teleport often as to not make them despawn, even in towns

PREFACE


This guide expects you to have some experience playing the game, especially summoners. If you run into any problems, please ask in Median XL Discord #general or #new-players, as you’ll likely get the answer faster than posting here.

Some of the build variants (especially lategame v3) are being iterated on. If you have any good suggestions or this guide is missing something you’d like to see, please post in the thread or contact Sir Frank (fuppy#0001) on Discord.

Totem necro is a great build to season start with, because it doesn’t require that much in terms of gear until lategame (but then again, what build doesn’t). Totem necromancer is pseudotanky with life after kill from Soulbond and little bit of defense from Death Ward. Totems and Jinn drawing aggro from monster also helps a great deal and should be used to your advantage if you’re struggling to stay alive otherwise. Still, we are somewhat a hybrid between a summoner and a caster, so temper your expectations around that. One of the strongest summoners right now (as of patch 1.7, even more so in 2.0).

Since patch 1.7 Frostclaw should now be our main totem early on and since 2.0 Stormeye totem will be our #1 farming tool. Totemnec can do all content up to 120 with just tiered uniques/honorifics, some clever teleporting and totem placement. Most 125+ content is doable with proper gear and when you obtain enough of the charms and possibly their trophies.

Our gear mainly takes a lot of strength and dexterity, so those should be prioritised somewhat heavily, until we start getting a ton of attributes from uber charms.

PROS/CONS


+ Easy leveling with Frostclaw
+ Easy charms with Frostclaw
+ As of 2.0, good and easy farmer with Stormeye
+ You have strong totems to tank for you
+ Gear requirements are not harsh early on
+ Good sustain from either soulbond or items
- Can be sort of squishy early on
- Playstyle might not fit everyone, as it consist of teleporting around constantly (i.e. a lot of skill switching)
- Can not realistically do Kingdom of Shadows uber

BASICS


You're not supposed to run much in this build, but instead use our innate skill, Bend the Shadows to move you and your totems around. That to avoid having to resummon all totems, which becomes very tedious once you start getting 4+ totems total. Early on you can combine Bend the Shadows with Pax Mystica Blink to be able to blink through walls and have 2 teleports that don't share cooldown (since Bend the Shadows is considered a warpstrike).

SETUP

Dexterity: Enough for gear (which is a lot early on)
Vitality: Dump
Energy: Aiming for 2000 total is enough

Prioritise 60% of your attributes to energy, 30% to strength and 10% to dexterity while leveling. That means you can wear the majority of your gear later on. Once you start getting your 115-125 charms, you can respec a lot of strength away.

Dirge


This procs when you resummon your totems. It's mainly meant for farming or labbing, and we don't want to invest into it too early.

Stormeye


This totem casts Stormcall as of patch 2.0, which does more damage the closer it is to target. It has no ND (next delay), which means all totems casting the spell at the same time doesn't mean some of the hits don't connect.

Soulbond


This passive is totem specific, not a generic buff on you. Meaning you always want to keep the totems fairly close to each other. The radius is a little bit smaller than the shockwave from Stormeye totem.

Cast speed


Apprenticeship mentions that totems inherit your spellcaster attributes, but that sadly excludes cast speed. They have a fixed cast time on all of them and cast speed only affects things like summoning totems and Jinn.

Frostclaw Totem


To farm with this, I strongly suggest you place 1-2 Frostclaw away from the pile of totems, so they don’t all target the same enemy, wasting a lot of potential damage. General strategy I run with is to use Bend the Shadows a lot and place 1-2 Frostclaw between the enemy and myself, as my mana allows it.

Target acquisition range is roughly the same range as Stormeye Totem’s shockwave.

Lorekeeper


These gloves are huge for us, since the Firedance buff can double dip with our totems.

Snapshotting


Totems snapshot the stats they inherit from you when summoned, meaning technically the only potential damage you lose from swapping to another weapon after summoning all totems is the +skills modifier. This opens up a lot of interesting options I'll explore in 1.8 with Pax Mystica Xis

This also means it's highly beneficial to summon totems during any spell damage or elemental damage buffs like Firedance.

UBERS


If not mentioned here, just let totems/Jinn tank and kill the uber while avoiding damage by using Bend the Shadows often. Frostclaw is the default totem for all ubers, unless otherwise mentioned.

Death Projector: Place totems around the fella, so they eat the spiraling lightning and not you

Prince Bull Rodeo: Place all totems on BPR, prioritising Frostclaw but making sure Soulbond is up for them

The Veiled Prophet Video: Make sure you have all totems, spam Jinn to tank the acolytes and put Frostclaw on the enemy totem

Judgement Day Video: This is far easier with Frostclaw than any other build. Aim to walk out of this uber with 2 upgraded charms

Twin Seas: Keep totems in one place and run away from the boss to pull her back in if she teleports too far from the totems

Quov Tsin Video: This is a bit of a doozy. I just went in and out of Quov’s range with all totems up, effectively bombing him with Frostclaw hits

Kingdom of Shadow: As hard for us as most others. Don’t Bend the Shadows unless enemies are far enough from you

Eve of Destruction: Surprisingly easy, just Bend the Shadows the totems out of Baal’s melee range whenever he gets close. You might get occasional boss spawn, but Frostclaw should make fairly short work of them and the minions.

Banisher of Light Video: Same strategy as Twin Seas. Bend the Shadows to dodge punishers and keep totems damaging Kabraxis.

Lord of Lies: Find the rat and Bend the Shadows on him whenever he gets out of totem range.

Xazax: Fairly hard for us, since totems will target Penitents and their bash (and Xazax’ spells) are pretty good whenever totems are piled on top of each other. My strategy to was to try and keep all Frostclaws on Xazax with 1 Fireheart/Stormeye to activate Soulbond, while keeping other totems on Peninents, so they don’t run after you.

Astrogha: Keeping Soulbond up on this fight is far too hard, as they might easily kill Astro’s totems and heal him. I just divebombed him with myself & Frostclaw over and over until he died. Might take a while.

Void Video: Soulchain Frostclaw might clear to the final fight with the right gear (Eviscerator + block shield for Wrath, real gear for rest), the final fight is apparently doable. I had my suspicions that it would take a lot of micro but I managed to consistently do it a couple of times.

Invasion III Video: Hug the boss whenever there's no cold circle around to soak the fire aura damage and then run around the rift storms when they spawn (lightning circles on ground). When boss goes immune, he does retaliate nova which kills you fairly fast, so keep hugging that boss.

Very Nice guide !!! I started as a totem necro too, this character is my favourite. I'm in mid-game for a while with the set. I farming singnets and find better gear, but this is a very good character, and fun to play.

I had the idea of making gameplay vids a bit too late, was far too geared at that point. I'll probably make some as I progress thru the ubers in the next season.

Thats the idea behind using Celestial Crown and stacking cold SD in the guide. Stacking Cold SD, -enemy cold res, and SF early gives an insane boost to Frostclaw totem. Additionally, that will be the first totem (at least up to ~120 ish) that you will have 3 of.

Also.... the tooltip for Totemic Mastery explains what the totems inherit from you.

Totems increase in damage from +element% damage and +spell% damage on items? The last time I played a totemancer, I believe totems only received those bonuses if they were from skills, thus you would max Dragonfire Oil and go with Fireheart.
