Introduction

This build revolves around throwing things. Some new player/character tricks and tips will be included here. General information and other commentary are also mixed in. While the focus is a Solo, Self-Funded (SSF) build, online multiplayer is also worthwhile. My knowledge is a collection of testing and research; I have my fair share of questions as well. Suggestions and corrections are welcome and encouraged.



Pros and Cons


    Yay

What's not to love?
  • Approximately zero luck is needed for starting out. Items are improved throughout leveling with Mystic Orbs, uptiers, and crafting recipes.
  • It's an oSkill build yet throwing is instantly accessible with the starting signet of gold used to purchase Throwing Axes sold by Act 1 vendors.
  • Hit the ground running right at level 1, unlike those other builds that require a skill point at level 2 to become useful.
  • Steady growth between gear and skills help round out any damage, speed, or recovery needs, leading to a fluid experience.
  • To reiterate: this build becomes as fun, fast, and frenzied as you like. There's a fourth "f" in there somewhere, but I forgot.

To be daft:
  • Harder: Paladins gain 3hp per vitality (1.5x that of Assassins/Amazons)
  • Better: I seem to like the idea.
  • Faster: Superbeast is 5fpa (1.4x throws from Assassins/Amazons)
  • Stronger: The staying power of this build is unrivaled. Ascend through increasingly perilous endeavors. Mark your accomplishments with various charms, and trophies, and celebrations.

    Nay

Humble beginnings
  • Acquiring the first set of Arcane Crystals for a T1 Icebird can be a bit of a hurdle
  • Unmorphed Paladin caps at 9fpa, which leaves him a bit underpowered at first
  • Emphasis on "solo", "self", and "found"
"It doesn't one-shot/faceroll everything"
  • This build is a great way to stay a while and behold all the wonderful new sprites, mechanics, and animations
  • Technique is underrated
"It doesn't heal that much"
  • In the immortal words of Isai: "Don't Get Hit."
  • Summons are helpful or even necessary for survival while relatively slow heals become effective
  • Leveling up is a free, permenant buff
"You're not even a real Paladin, you use an Assassin skill"
  • Ludonarrative dissonance is as ubiquitous as it is meaningless
"Why is it called magic finding when everyone's after sacred unique gear?"
  • Beats me

Stats


    Early Game

    • Strength: As necessary for gear. Try to abstain.
    • Dexterity: Max
    • Vitality: Zero
    • Energy: About 25-50 helps achieve infinite mana
    • Stamina: I wish it were an option. Spending 50 to 100 points in it for a 1:1 return on Stamina would be fantastic.

    Later Game

    • Strength becomes unnecessary due to skills and charms. It can however, become the primary attribute with a variation.
    • Dexterity is the #1 priority. It helps deal damage, gives attack rating, and provide blocking.
    • Vitality is situational. It can help to swap from Dexterity to Vitality for certain purify quests.
    • Energy becomes unnecessary due to skills and charms. While mana usage can be a factor, infinite sustain can be achieved for primary attacks.



Speeds


    General

    • tl;dr: Paladin has a 9f throw, Penguin has a 5f throw
    • Skills make decent breakpoints effortless to achieve. Later on charms, socketables, or Mystic Orbs may help to get faster ones.
    • Testing an Icebird with both 60 on-weapon IAS and hundreds of off-weapon IAS did not break 5fpa. Worth knowing.
    • The Throwing Axe and Flying Knife weapons are both -20 WSM. The Balanced Axe is -10 WSM

Skills


    Innate

      These do not get enough attention
    • Throw: Gotta start somewhere. Buy an OP Throwing Axe from an act one vendor for the most puritanical approach, Mister Paladin (Or spam Mindflay). Upgrade to Icebird when possible.
    • Attack: Innate. Can help proc 'on melee attack' effects. Can upgrade to oSkills like Gorefest, Charged Strike, etc. to not miss out on too much damage while fishing for the buff.
    • Move Only: Very helpful for spamming clicks without risking much commitment
    • Vindicate: Health regen, damage. I am guessing the 404 on the scrolls page means that this can no longer be upgraded in its duration, so I should stop farming for that.


    oSkills

      With an item-based primary skill, there are many available points for passives, buffs, and summons. This build explodes at level 90 from Superbeast's speed. In order of usefulness:

    • 1 Elemental Wisdom: Does not help with magic, not even at a diminished percent. I guess to make Neutraldin less OP.
    • 1-25 Veneration of Justice: short-term hp/mp and damage. Useful for burst damage and survival.
    • 10-25 Spark of Hope: Bonus points for additional speed and duration. Can buff allies, too.

    • 25 Servants of Valor: Free minion tanks. Sometimes still tactfully helpful to offload a one-shot or pull a group with a minion. Yes, I do miss the Fire Elementals not being locked to a tree for the Amazon.
    • 10 Conclave: Makes the free tanks tankier.
    • 1-10 Fervor: Minion Damage is nice

    Templar/Incarnation/Nephalem/Ritualist

    • Zero, as these lock other, more valuable skills. Skills like Lionheart and Holy Fire would be nice.

    Warlock

    • 1 Mindflay: Good for leveling if you aren't that virtuous
    • 0-1 Slayer: The healing can be useful, but not necessary
    • 25 Stormlord: Stats are nice
    • 10 Tainted Blood: Defense, healing
    • 1 Acumen: Additional stats and sometimes healing

    Mastery

    • 3 Meditation: Can help counteract the effects of +All Skills. Skippable midgame.
    • 4 Purity: Seems nice, non-essential
    • 6 Continuity: Seems nice, non-essential. Too convenient to pass up.
    • 10 Specialization: Pushes Tainted Blood to 20 and Servants to 30.
    • Tenacity/Endurance: Not damage; seldom useful.

    Reward

    • 1 Superbeast: Makes this build considerably more viable.
    • 1 Divine Aparition: 3-second teleport with freeze is nice
    • 1-15 Blessed Life: Until 50% Physical Resistances

    Damage dealing solutions:
    • Maelstrom has sweetspots/sourspots, try repositioning to see the variance of it
    • Larger enemies take extra hits
    • Use Mystic Orbs for Maximum Damage and Dexterity armors
    • Uptier the Icebird

    Health Recovery solutions:
    • Skills scale from total HP, so adding more helps
    • Add Rubies or Mystic Orbs to weapons for Life Per Kill. Recommended.
    • Prevent damage with Elemental Resistances. Add Diamonds to Shields or Mystic Orbs.

Hirelings

    If they could cast oSkills, this guide might be twice as long. Accompaniment is usually for damage or sustain:
    • A1 Ranger and A5 Barbarians are great for leveling.
    • A2 Fighter Mage and A3 Necrolyte are great for crowd control.
    • A3 Abjurer is a meme for the double superbeast, especially when they are named "Zap"
    • For a more complete guide, I recommend this one. I also recommend prioritizing gold for Mystic Orbs and Oils first.




Challenges, Rifts, and Dungeons

    Battle notes:

    • Character level can completely change a fight/area. A level 135 fighting level 120s gets a free ~1.0588 scaler.
    • Firedance seems to have a deadspot if casting directly on big bosses (found on A4 Diablo).
    • Bone Spear projectiles are sometimes invisible?
    • Fire Shrines exist and work on (all?) bosses.

Additional Thoughts

I initially set out to make a Javazon and got distracted by oSkills as usual (nearly infinite stamina was nice). Even with after reverting to Javelins, the sheer slowness limit my interest to Bowazons and summoners (Fire Elementals are locked to the Blood tree now). There was a lot struggling through level 120 and then a sudden realization at the top of a mountain as I transformed into Diablo: "Can Superbeast throw?". Thus, this.

The other transforms cannot throw, by the way. They can however, transform and then swap to other weapons to use oSkills.
