So, I've been thinking about posting this for a long time and didn't but I'm kinda interested in feedback.

Since AGES, I've wanted to play an elemental Throwing Axe Barbarian, because the Sterrenvogel TU Throwing Axe made me curious.
So, I finally started a project that has since developed into a IED Throwing Axe Guard Tower Barbarian (Note that I'm playing Non-Ladder SSF mostly)

Started out with the idea: TU Throwing Axe + elemental Doom from Wolves + Screaming Eagle elemental Doom + Skill for Damage Application = Win
Turned out to be quite fun until maybe around Lvl 100, at which point it started to suck. I basically used Fortress (yes) for Dmg spreading and Screaming Eagle to debuff/main skill and focused on -enemy res on equip.
This was when Guard Tower showed up and I was like: This looks promising. Turns out it is.

So I'm playing this now, but because of SSF I'm kinda limited equipment-wise.

Attributes:
Str only. Don't need Dex, I've put in some points in Dex mid-game. Useless, but you don't loose that much Damage in doing so thanks to Nephalem Spirit.


Equip looks like this right now:

Main Weapon: Crafted (any) Sacred Throwing Axe with +Life on striking and +Skills (for the GT lvl 33)
Shield: Crafted (any) Sacred Gilded Shield with +15-16 Guard Tower and +life after each kill

could be better, I know, but actually, those are the most important modifiers at this point of the game. with a lot of charms later, you can skip the +skills and go for more dmg/strength/proc on striking or kill. Or even focus on specific Shrine usage (prob Creepy Shrine for more Strenght). Sustain from +LoS and +LaeK is mandatory full stop

i tried maxing Screaming Eagle but sadly, it's not a good skill after lvl 100-110. Great short term debuff for certain situations, though (slowing pretty much anything down). Was very disappointed with the skill progression though. Plus everytime I use it I don't cast GT.

Damage Numbers:
I'm at around 1-2k fire, 3-5k lightning and with Lion stance 2-3k magic dmg with 100% rainbow pierce atm. So total about 10-17k.

Sustain:
Fine with +LoS (4) and +LaeK (250) and Good with additional Eagle Stance. Still a Glass Cannon.

I'm feeling my biggest weakness is being Barb-Slow, so kiting is a pain even with Screaming Eagle debuff.

Ubers:

Scosglen is still hard (for Etherborns and Big Trees as well as some Druids). Might be equip/charm check failing atm, mostly defense/res.

Fauzt/Dunc/Bremmtown/Vizjun farming is fluid but not at "top" speed. I'm constantly moving though.

Can do CFM Upgrade, Book of Lies, farm Kabraxis and Astrogha is what I'm doing atm.

still struggling with Kingdom of Shadows, but I always hated that place (need the movement speed on charm though).

Yshari/Uldy/Atanna Khan/Laz/Void/Labs not attempted yet.

Spirit of Gyuia/Xazax/Invasion3 are possible with some patience (and some more Movement Speed/-enemy res)


Note that this Guide was somewhat helpful especially for the idea of an IED GT Barb, but not very helpful theorycrafting. I want to try fixing that with my post, since I'm considering this a fine mid-game equip right now.

I think you need to either focus on IED or Elemental TTAD, not both.

TTAD route: stack wolf debuff, screaming eagle, and Banish (ctc on melee for elemental weapons iirc). Enemy pierce doesn't matter here, and don't worry about stacking flat added elemental damage, you only need 1 damage in each element. Go Bear/Crane Stance, no other stances help here.

IED route: if you are focusing on JUST guard tower and fortress, don't gimp yourself with a throwing axe. Use a mammen axe for 10% extra scaling. If you get lucky and find the GT relic, keep the GT shield also for extra targets while farming, or switch to a heavy hitting 2h weapon for bossing (preferably Ono). Eagle stance for sure here.

TTAD:

1. Doesn't Banish cancel at least one of the other effects? I know that Hunter's Mark TTAD and Doom TTAD do not stack. Wasn't there a curse-debuff limitation of sorts?

2. Is Crane Stance still a thing? I've not found it in the Docs.

3. So Elemental TTAD doesn't get influenced by -% enemy resists? That would make the damage values understandable (Target Dummy Testing) and even more crappy at the same time. For if you focus on Hunter's Mark 663 x 4 = 2652 and add Screaming Eagle 600-700 x 4 = 2400-2800 the Output seems way too low to be playable IF it's not affected by -% enemy resists. Plus you have to either cast (SE) the skill or hope (Wolves) for the effects to be applied, kinda unreliable.

IED:

I see your point, what keeps me from this atm is that i started as a throwing char, and i like the +LoS on the Weapon as well as Screaming Eagle situational value. I will give the Mammen Axe a shot though, gonna craft a decent one.

Thinking what to do to make build better. Want to try elemental build, i saw the examle of a build with facebreaker, flameskin; want to test it with zakarum set. Any ideas, thoughts about that?

I don't think elemental will be better, but worth a try. You will proabably want an innate elemental weapon (fire) if you go down that route.

The problem with an elemental guard tower build is how do you heal? You aren't melee attacking so you can't benefit from Life on Attack or Life Spark on Attack. And Eagle Stance is not enough regen to rely on, specially with a small life pool if you are pure str spec (which you would for IED build).

Well if you have the high end gear its probably less of an issue due to killspeed, but on the way there I found it difficult.

Use Eagle Stance, Craft a +16 GT Shield WITH additional +life after each kill (about 80-100 is fine), and i went with a throwing axe for a long time, less damage but access to screaming eagle debuff (slower and weaker enemies) AND life on striking (up to +5), that can make a difference. otherwise i would sugest Crafted Mammen axe (more damage) with +life after each kill on it.

are good for that purpose as well for the balanced offensive/defensive and of course, more +life after reach kill. I guess mid-endgame (like, clearing fauzt is easy and scos is slow, but doable) you will be very good with something like +250 LaeK, I just checked and my Barb has +180 and is fine (with 11k life and Eagle Stance at around 20sec). Playstyle is more of a kiting one with a lot of backing up cautiously, avoiding projectiles, until you have the damage to stand still using the avoid from immortal to melt enemies.
