Ancients' Hand Daggermancer


Introduction
Stealthmaster has written a Melee Necromancer guide, which focuses more on Parasite and many alternatives for spell-proc and weapon-damage scythe setups here: Stealthmaster's Melee Necromancer.

In conjunction with his guide, here is a new melee necromancer, utilizing dagger/shield combinations with the Ancients' Hand oskill, Carnage, and attack/kill procs with a surprising amount of firepower, defense, and rather cheap to complete gear and many charms for a build that, for a long time, has been referred to as a meme-character.

This guide is still seeing some updates for images and uber content. Bear with me. It will be done soon.

Consult the patch notes if you get confused about new areas or boss names. If you're still confused after reading the changelog and the information provided in this guide, then feel free to post your questions and comments.

This guide should serve as a strong starter, and questions are welcome if you become stuck.



Pros
-Great single-target skill (Ancients' Hand) and high WDM AoE skill (Carnage) for immunes.
-Tons of defense, some avoid, and good resists.
-Plenty of buffs to boost damage output and survivability.
-Fairly cheap gear to make and/or find.

Cons
-More or less, typical Melee Necromancer (hold RMB, profit).
-Not as good of a farmer as Parasite Melee Necromancer.

Miscellaneous

Burning Veil
Innate Skill - Wall of burning rage is opened up at the target location, buffing your damage when you pass through.

Bloodlust
As an oskill, this benefits from +skills. Buffs all damage types for procs and our weapon.



Malice Tree
Funeral Pyre
Spawns a burning mass of undead corpses on a target enemy that explode for 5 seconds per cast, dealing fire damage. Pre-requisite.

Rotting Flesh
Requires a summon as a target, consumes the summon and explodes into poison nova. Pre-requisite.

Boneyard
Fires a ghost spear that explodes into a sparkling nova. Initial target takes no damage, but any monsters hit by the sparkling trails will take physical/magic damage. Pre-requisite.
Nightwalker
Faster Cast Rate and Poison Length Reduction. Good 1-pt skill.



Melee Tree
Carnage
Hits the target with small area with multiple weapon-damage novas with some fire damage conversion.

Parasite
Hits the target with a bouncing projectile, dealing your weapon-damage to all targets struck with it.

Famine
Gives passive Life Leech and Physical Damage to weapon.

Angel of Death
Leaps to the target, swinging your weapon for lots of poison damage when you land. Used mostly as a movement skill.

Deathlord
Morph into a Death Knight, giving you a ton of Strength/Dexterity/Defense and faster attack speed breakpoints.



Xbow Tree
Flametail Shot
Fires a piercing rocket arrow that stuns enemies. Pre-requisite.

Death Shards
Explodes a corpse, sending tons of spikes flying in all directions. Pre-requisite.

Dragonfire Oil
Grants passive fire damage to weapon.



Summon Tree
Skeletal Flayers
Summon with Demon Blood Aura (50% Max HP, some life regeneration and spell damage). Used as 1-pt summon for situational use where we need distractions.



Support Tree
Embalming
Grants passive bonuses to %Mana Regeneration and %Max Life to both you and your summons.

Sacrifices
Summons "sacrificial lambs" that instantly die and provide you with free corpses. Pre-requisite.

Bend The Shadows
Requires a minion as a target - teleports you and your summons to the targeted minion. Pre-requisite.

Bane
Uses target summon to create large nova that curses enemies, reducing their physical resistance. Can be used situationally for bosses, but mostly pre-requisite.

Talon's Hold
Grants passive slow target and reanimates.



Reward Tree
Deathward
Grants huge passive amounts of defense and some avoid.

Graveyard
Black Road Challenge Reward. Casts a Punisher bolt every 0.6 seconds, dealing massive poison damage, and gains an extra punisher per 8 hard points.



Early Game


Use your starting Signet of Gold and gamble any dagger from Gheed. Once you hit Lvl 2, you'll be able to use Carnage and stomp right through enemies all the way up until Tristram, where you'll be able to farm Griswold for his treasure boxes to get access to some of our early gear.

*Note* Pick up all apples, rings, amulets, and jewels that you find. They sell for a lot and will give you enough gold to buy potions, TPs, and Oil of Crafts to open Griswold's Treasure boxes.

Gameplay
Morph into Deathlord (re-equip gear if needed -- you can use Deathlord to morph, then equip gear after you get the bonus strength/dex), buff with Burning Veil, then Carnage/Parasite to win. Use Angel of Death to jump out of big mobs if you get stuck. Skeletal Flayers can be used briefly to distract monsters while you attack, if needed (shouldn't be needed for general play).

*Note* Make sure you are toggled to walk (black character, white background in icon next to stamina bar). You move at the same speed for both run and walk in Deathlord morph, so make sure you're walking and utilizing your defense.

Run through Hatred, be sure to do all of the extra quests that give you extra skills and stats (Den of Evil in Act 1, Radament in Act 2, Lam Esen's Tome and Jade Figurine in Act 3, Izual in act 4). Don't worry about getting your Class Charm,

Bonus: Completing the Anya quest in Act 5 will reward you with a Scroll of Resistance (+10% All Resist) -- Cube this with your Prism each difficulty that you complete the quest in -- +30% All Resists total.

If you haven't completed Hatred yet, go ahead and kill Baal, then go grab Wirt's Leg to clear Hatred Cows. That will give you decent experience (with Greater XP Elixirs -- check docs for recipes) until about lvl 60-62. The extra 10-12 levels make a big difference in equipping gear and getting more damage. Once you've done that, go to the Island of the Sunless Sea in the Glacial Trail with a couple more Greater XP Elixirs. That area will take you to about 68-70 before it slows down too much. (Be aware of Malic to the lower right path. He has slow-moving one-hit kill missiles.)

By the time you're Lvl 65-72ish, Hatred K3KBA will be extremely easy if you've followed the gear plan. Our next challenge is the Ennead Challenge:

Proceed onto Terror and run through the difficulty, just the same as you did Hatred, probably orbing your gear and uptiering/respeccing stats as needed to equip your things. Some challenges pop up in Act 1 and Act 2 that are easily completed along the way:

The Black Road Challenge is a collection of five trials that must be completed separately, and three of the five will be done as we progress through Terror. One of the tasks requires the Book of Summoning from the Summoner in the Terror Arcane Sanctuary. Because Graveyard isn't an imperative skill for us to obtain, we can wait until we get more charms and better gear to complete the two more difficult tasks.

The other two Black Road Trials will be completed later on after we have a good number of charms to make survivability much less of an issue, plus, as mentioned, Graveyard isn't absolutely necessary to us yet, so it's fine to postpone this challenge.






Mid Game


As you make your way through Terror, keep a lookout for Spirit Edge (Sacred). You'll use those to craft if you haven't already. Charsi can imbue your item to make it rare for crafting -- just make sure you are at least Lvl 95 before imbuing for this since the imbue recipe is:

White Item + Imbue = Rare Item with ilvl of Character Level +4

You're also going to want to start keeping an eye out for Fascinating Shrines, as shrines can start dropping in Act 2. Hopefully with a bit of luck and/or trading/farming, you'll be able to gather up some pieces for the midgame gear:

Adding in the switch-buff weapon/shield isn't a big change. Just keep Dark Power on a hotkey and switch to buff real quick, then switch back. I seemed to struggle often on my own gameplay with accidental hotkeys. Make sure you don't switch to cast DP and accidentally unmorph from Deathlord in the middle of a mob. :D

Don't forget you can "abuse" Deathlord to morph and use the huge bonus in Strength/Dexterity to equip gear, as long as you make sure your gear is equipped if you die.



Gameplay
Gameplay will remain the same as we have been doing all game with just one more addition. You'll have access to Ancients' Hand now (if you didn't already), which will destroy single targets and most enemies that aren't fire immune. The main issue with Ancients' Hand is that its 100% physical conversion to fire. In most cases, this is a great thing. What makes it bad is that you no longer deal physical damage with that skill, which means you can't leech with it. Carnage, on the other hand, is 100% WDM and only 30% conversion to fire damage. You can almost instantly leech back to full health in a small mob of enemies with Carnage.
