Introduction


This is a build guide for the Unholy Melee Paladin (also known as UHM or UMP) using Lemures from the Ritualist skill tree as the primary attack. This is a melee caster build (more on that in a bit) that's straightforward to play and can do pretty much everything in the game on a budget.

Pros

  • Great build for leveling and beginners
  • Decent at both farming and bossing
  • Straightforward rightclicker playstyle
  • Full vitality build
  • High sustain
  • Minimal gear requirements

Cons

  • Melee with low defense against physical attacks
  • Relies on buff uptime (60 seconds, 3-5 minutes, and 10 minutes)
  • Doesn't scale as well into the extreme endgame as other builds due to low base damage and lack of gear support
  • Can be a little monotonous to play with zero skill switching except to buff and teleport

Lemures Mechanics


Lemures (and its counterpart Bloodthorns) are a little bit unconventional so it's probably a good idea to start with how the skill works. If you're familiar with the classic Diablo II skill Charged Strike, you already know most of what you need to. Lemures is a melee attack that triggers a spell of 8 ghosts that fly out of the target then pick an enemy to home in on, dealing cold damage in a small area.

The melee attack works exactly like a normal attack. It uses attack speed, attack rating, and can proc life/mana on melee attack if it hits the target. This means that we use attack speed (instead of cast speed) to hit with Lemures more often. And life/mana on melee attack will be our primary source of sustain, so we also need to make sure we have enough attack rating to hit enemies.

The spell works like most spells do, except that the synergy bonus scales with Vitality instead of Energy.The damage is increased by skill level, cold spell damage, spell focus, and cold pierce (reduced enemy cold resistance) as you might expect, and it doesn't require attack rating to hit. However, the damage formula that Lemures uses affects how we prioritize those stats:

Base Damage × (100 + Cold Spell Damage)% × (50 + Vitality Bonus + Spell Focus/10)%
Reference, confirmed by my testing to apply to Lemures as well.

It's difficult to optimize this against all possible combinations of items, so I'll just give some benchmarks for when to use which jewel craft:

Late Game Gear (Scosglen and Dimensional Labyrinth)

For Labyrinth, you'll want to choose gear that gets you to 90% elemental resistances and 60% physical resist (10 over cap on phys res to deal with the curse that's cast on you). At tier 6+, you'll start encountering Phoboss, and he reduces your maximum cold resistance so you want [86 + labs tier] max cold res if you want to attempt him. At tiers 9 and 10, you'll also need 260 total stacked resists because enemies start piercing 100 resists as well.

Scosglen doesn't require nearly as much defenses and should be doable at 83 resists and comfortable at 85-86.

for help clearing Fauztinville. Any of the Act 3 mercs are probably also reasonable choices.

Some people struggle with mana sustain after switching to Skylord, since it's a lot less mana on melee attack than the honorific was. There are a couple of ways to deal with this problem:
  • Don't switch to Skylord before collecting your +attributes charms up through level 120
  • Keep Stormlord maxed until way later in the game
  • Add %mana regen mystic orbs to your rings and amulet

All weapons can get to 5 frames, but it still depends on weapon speed. There's no difference between Holy Lance, Short Staff, Bonebreaker, and Plium like there might be on regular characters, but there still is between Holy Lance and Tepoztopilli.

Dunc is surprisingly difficult and I think BT is just always better there, but I can throw together something for Fauzt tonight or this weekend.

FYI, I've gone to labs with pretty much BiS gear and a ton of UMOs. The damage just isn't there (almost 9k tooltip dmg). It might be if you gear for full damage, but when you need to balance for 90% resists, there's no chance of going above t8. I've tested with Skylord though, might be doable if darkfeast/aeterna + Vortex yields more damage

I can also say that you can farm Scosglen pretty comfortably, with the exception of corrupted werewolf, who will one shot your mana pool and then promptly kill you in a second.


On another note, both dunc and fauzt are a joke as long as you use

Yeah i guess the delay makes it a pain in the ass for dunc, bt just instantly clears whatever is about to hit you.

So I suppose this is pretty much ur final answer for the question how lemures UMP behave in high labs I asked u once? COOL! Just keep testing, hoping to see ur lemures UMP clearing lab 8+ in less than 17 mins, better with 0 UMOs, btw.

From my experience, I personally dont think lemures UMP in current version is an any better starter than other popular builds such as Javazon, Totem nec or Lightning sorc...
And for endgame, I also see no big major advantage in lemures UMP than other popular builds this season. But that's just my personal experience, I like UMP, but it just keeping getting nerfed maybe since 1.4 or 1.5, sry cant remember correctly. And now the damage for UMP (both lemures and bloodthorns) is just quite not there, just like u said. Maybe unless u are in godlike gear.

Quick life update: My roommates left a lot more stuff behind when moving out this weekend than I thought they would, so all of my spare time this February has just evaporated. I won't be able to try anything out or update the guide until at least March and more likely next patch whenever it is.
