I'm worried about whether there would be some legal problems...

We dont like to talk about the L word...

legal problems with blizzard mainly start when you start charging money, provide a free copy of the game, disrupt the gameplay of their regular customers in some way (like d2 battle net bots), or by seriously competing with their own servers/content. otherwise they usually don't do much, especially to older games like D2. so we should be fine for now, since there's plenty of mods that did code edits to D2 before, and nothing happened to them.

I assume when Blizzard looks at us they just say "Eh, we got D3. Let them have their fun."

I hope to god that never changes tbh.

There's nothing wrong with reverse engineering the code, it's no different than regular modding. We are making changes to the game but we always credit blizzard for the base game. Also, blizzard employees have publicly acknowledged median in the past so it's not like they'll appear one day and ask median to be shut down because well, they didn't do this before. Last point, lawsuits are all about money, and ultimately, median helps Blizzard profit since they need a copy of the game to play median. It's not like private WoW servers that leech players from the official servers which have a monthly subscription fee.

Granted Blizzard thinks D3 is unironically good.

The only issue I can see with legality is if Blizzard releases a Diablo II HD Remake anytime soon. They might not want mods for regular d2 to compete with it. I'm pretty doubtful of that though.

Blizzard has always been very supportive of the modding community, so I highly doubt that..

I'm assuming he believes the update would wipe his ultimative characters/render them unusable following Sigma.
