Making Runewords into Uniques

I just started on Median XL last week and have had a blast so far.

I know that runewords can't be created in uniques, but is there a way to create a runeword and then use Arcane Crystals to upgrade it into a unique? Would it just gain the traits of the base item or the runeword as well?

Nothing about the base item except its type and tier is at all relevant to the unique that gets created. It's a complete reroll of the item.
