I tried D2GL, but it ran very choppily and the smoothing did not work at all. Whereas this one just works perfectly for me right out of the box.

D2DX detected that 'compatibility mode' (e.g. for Windows XP) was set for the game, but this isn't necessary for D2DX and will cause problems.
Please disable 'compatibility mode' for both 'Game.exe' and 'Diablo Il.exe'.

You just have to make sure to change the config file and set noresmod to true and nocompatmodefix to true and when launching the game you can actually use the launcher, using settings for glide and unofficial graphics drivers glide3x.dll.
you can use alt+enter to switch from windowed to a real borderless windowed that works. if you have a 2nd monitor your mouse can move to it playing like this, if you don't want that, you might have to play with something else or change some settings I dunno. This is just how I play since I dislike playing diablo 2 in 16:9 res.
