When I play alone and want to get from point A to point B it can be very difficult for zealer to move forward. I'm using tele staff too, and it can still easily happen that he gets trapped.
Act 5 merc is the tankiest of all mercs and he uses AoE Stun. I put on him ctc Glacial Spike, knockback and amplify damage, so he stops monsters from attacking me and I have time to move or wait so he can kill stuff for me. Overall he helps me a lot with not getting stuck in random mobs and he practically never dies. The other mercs die quickly in comparison.
Many of my other chars are much better at clearing trash anyway, so I don't focus on that on the zealer and prefer to skip it and not always worry about merc's health bar.
