Id say people have to get it for "free" first, to see if this program works for their pc setups and the desired games they wanna test it on, then if you like it - support the developer by bying it. To say a program is paid these days on the internet is to have no knowledge of internet at all and pay for everything blindly, where you can have nearly 99,99% of everything for free as long as you know where to look and ofc even when one obtain something for free, one can always find a way to support the developers
I respectfully disagree I am a game developer myself. If my product "may not work" as intended on any machine and requires testing first for credibility, then I shouldn't be selling it in the first place. Also if I'm developing something that can be catchy as "download more FPS", rest assured that I'll milk it to nine hells. Just like you've said, it's the internet these days. Exposure is the main currency. So my initial thought in these situations is that if a software is for sale at this age, that either is a scam or has to be really good which LS falls into the latter category.
And for scams, well, probably all of us are almost trained perfectly to recognize those immediately anyway.
