No, but you can use level 1 char of same class as charm and cube with jewel to get bonus.

Some morphs don't have a block animation and use the hit recovery animation instead. Stacking FHR will improve your block rate and hit recovery.
How do defenses of the stronger single units work? Curious as to why I am only hitting like 5-10% of the time.

some monsters have higher defense. It works the same way as your own defense. Higher defense = less chance to be hit.
So I assume the % chance to hit on the stat sheet is incorrect in these cases?

no. the monster just has very high defense or your attack rating is garbage
Assumed high avoid given I miss 9 of 10 hits with 90% chance to hit.

Wait, if you have physical copy of the game then you can just use D2SE or update your game up to 1.13c, however you need to install patches manually (not through battle.net). You don't need registered/valid D2 keys to play MXL, that's some misinformation.
Well I don't understand what you mean. Following the link you gave before, the forum post about installing median with D2SE and plugy. That way of installing requires Bnets reformatted game keys, the original physical copy keys dont work with those installers.
