Actually i play a casting and summoning druid with a5 merc.
So maybe slow on my merc is not so helpful? hmmm ... and if not, what would be a better idea?

As a druid a2 shapeshifter would be a good option for bloodlust buff, a3 abjurer if you want damage from merc, a2 fighter mage for chronofield with some glacial nova proc gear is good cc.

Just keep in mind you want str for a2 merc too, and buff duration for abjurer.

Are most oskills just rubbish or do you have to build for them specifically.

, Maelstrom. It's 25% of weapon damage and it does a good job chipping away at the enemy, albeit very slowly. I noticed that in older guides there were a few builds which are based on oskills, but looking at most of them which are 25% of weapon damage... I can't feel very optimistic.

Is it just a gap in my knowledge or were oskills nerfed significantly between then and now? I'm just 2+ weeks into the game.

the only one i can think of off the top of my head that isnt just a switch buff is using oris for magic missle on neutraldin, discodin, or running wolfstance on an xbow nec

can merc get moar then 50% physical resist?

the way ive seen it explained is say you have 1200% TCD bonus, youd gain 600 vit. i cant personally confirm this though
