I've tested A3 as well but personally I feel like it has less advantages compared to the others. A2 is prefered for Labyrinth because it's super easy to get 60% dr and max resists. A5 in labs is possible but you need a lot of gear.
I've never really used mercs, in cLoD and early versions of Median they tended to just die immediately, survive and be insignificant or just bug out. Only time I used them was level challenge (Tran Athalua) back in LazBro Median days, as some classes/builds would get shredded, while an act 3 bloodmage merc could solo it naked.
So how to equip an act 2 merc?

, etc? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Depends on your character, what you want to use it for, your current items.
A2 merc is generally the most versatile in terms of buffs. It naturally has access to bloodlust so it is preferable early on and doesn't require much %physical damage reduction because of its innate abilities so it makes a great Overall tank for all stages of the game including Labs. Access to Night's Embrace and many other supportive weapons.
A5 merc is more physical damage based along with having the perk of a small Gift of the Wild buff every so-often. It's way harder to obtain %physical damage reduction on A5 merc but he deals way more damage than A2. Access to Quarak's gives one of the best Bloodlusts in the game or you can give it a strong 2h DPS wep though the Bloodlust is pretty damn good.
A3 is the least versatile merc but provides elemental based-dps. More specifically, Abjurer variant of the merc because it deals more elemental and spell damage compared to the others. Not much use for A3 mercs in my experience, The A2 and A5 just have way more benefits going for it.
