Yes, Deathgaze is axe skill. It doesn't matter. Barbarian can dual-wield, and as long as he holds sword and axe, he's free to use skills from both trees.
Yes, dual-wielding leaves barb with no shield and therefore lacking in defense.
Also, just what is Remorseless Winter?
dex -> cold dmg and vit -> cold dmg scaling doesnt work while dual weilding
remorseless winter is the skill that activates the vit -> cold dmg conversion effect
