How to get all charms with T6 gear


Introduction

1.3 patch Update: Barb got slightly nerfed, but it is really minor, we change our aoe attack to SOR and lose some damage from bear stance/thundergod. Everything remains as viable as before. If you want better clear speed go for death gaze instead of sor, takes 5 more points to remove cooldown, put less points in defensive skills. Sor is slightly better at killing bosses early on, also provides extra defense reducing enemy attack rating. Gaze provides much better trash clear speed because it has no delay like sor.

This is a walkthrough/guide/challenge how to get all charms as a barbarian using very basic gear.
Here are rules I follow in this run:

    - only basic gear: tiered uniques, basic runewords (no great or elemental runes)
    - no crafts, sacred uniques and sets
    - no signets of learning
    - no respec
    - no merc
    - minimal farming, only to get t6 uniques

The reason I decided to try it is to challenge myself, find out if it is possible to complete, and finally wirting it as a wakthrough might help new players to get charms, explore parts of the game they never did before, because for instance they didn't want to respec to specific builds. I will provide you with log of my journey, step by step, order of acquiring charms in optimal way.
Keep in mind, this isn't the best barb build in the game, it is nowhere near the best build for farming, but that is ok, because we will not farm with it. There are also more optimal builds to beat certain bosses, but require specialized gear and spec, which is what I'm trying to avoid, to keep it as simple as possible. Spec I came up with worked for me, there might be improvements to it, or entirely alternative approaches. This is just what worked for me.
Why barb?
Barb has tools to beat heroic bosses, and at the same time can be extremely tanky with basic items, which opens up uberquests that require you to tank and travel (whirlwind) though enemies. Our weakness will be relatively poor damage output, caused by basic gear (lack of pierce from crafts). Another thing worth noting here, as you might expect, we will not use block, because of no signet requirement and no crafts, which makes reaching high block chance impossible. Using shield is still viable for huge defense bonus (rest our gear doesn't grant that much defense so impact of gilded shield is huge). The reason I decided to mix in 2h axe in the build is to get more damage, as we are seriously gimped in that department by refusing to craft gear (pierce). 2h axes not only pack way more base damage than 1h weapons, but thunderfury proc adds a lot of single target damage, that is needed in many encounters we gonna face.

Just keep in mind that if you follow this walkthrough, some of harder uberquests also require bit of experience and player skill to complete, so don't expect it to be a breeze, that you collect all these charms in listed order in your first attempt. Some charms don't even always drop so several runs will be required, and some quests are just pretty difficult to execute for person who tries it for first time. Nevertheless is definitely possible to beat the game with listed gear, I did it, so you can do it too! If you decide to follow this run but without gear restriction, everything with be easier, 500 signets will make it even easier. I'd say you can expect biggest difference in difficulty by using pierce gear for some tougher heroic bosses, and vitality/healing spec for purify bosses. But it really isn't necessary, as in my run, with t6 nothing took extremely long to beat (longest boss fights where your damage matters took about 40 minutes)

Build

STATS: 250-270 str, base dex and energy, rest (~400) in vitality

Runemaster + bear stance for 50% dr and very high defense.
Axe tree to utilize power of 2h axes (thunderfury innate axe proc) to somehow fill the gap of low damage caused by weak gear.
Sword tree to get AR and life from daedalus (supermax for increasing returns), lightning damage source, and most importantly – windform for movement.
12 points into ancient blood to get 12 skill ias (more powerful than item ias), allows us to max attack speed with swords.
1pt guardian to help us with few first ubers until we get edyrems. You could skip it and use kur scepter for example to get other summons but its painful.
This is good place to mention breakpoints: for 2h axes (labrys/valaska) 30WSM, with 12pt ancient blood: 215 IAS for 7fpa and 200FHR for 3frames hit recovery.
For 1h sword (kriegsmesser) -5WSM, you need only 83 IAS to hit max speed of 7 frames (with 12 points into anc blood)
Fortress as our ranged skills and utility to spread slow/open wounds. Some bosses we can't melee, this is where fortress does the job. It also helps with single target damage, assisting us while attacking. We can't afford more range synergy from wolves (only reason we are getting this skill), but 10 points provides decent bonus.
How to play the build?
1.3 patch Update: Use Shower of Rocks or death gaze, keep using iceburst & stormblast whenever needed same as before
Use death gaze with 2h axe and thunderslam for stun. For bosses you may switch to iceburst. Keep casting fortress as soon as it is is available (during fortress cooldown our character is transparent), when you see fade effect to end, cast fortress. You can't use fortress during bear stance, so you have to bind bear stance to switch into fortress, cast it and switch back. It is best done with scroll wheel bind, or AHK script that does it in one button press, for convenience.

For switch, when you use sword + shield, usually to move through harder zones (like ureh), remember to bind windform to LEFT button, and use it with shift, so your bear stance is constaantly activated.

Sockets: runes. Jah in weapon and chest (if you need resist use different runes in chest), pul, lo, gul, mal for resist, sha for 15 IAS each, frw or fhr depending whats need, these res/speed runes ideally in belt/gloves/boots.

Quick explanation why this gear:
Weapons: Valaska has good +stats and resists which we desperately need, unlike labrys it doesn't have -IAS, which hurts us early on. Another thing is balance oskill (it is soft points so not huge defense bonus but always something). Later on we will move to labrys, because of better offensive stats, but valaska will serve you for very long time. Note that shadowstorm proc is cold damage spell (same used by Ureh boss), it is decent while leveling, but don't expect it to carry you in harder ubers.
As for offhand setup, shield + sword has one use = movement with windform. Since our base def isn't that great, body armor defense is below 10k, base tiered unique boots/gloves/belt are pretty low def too, adding a gigantic defense gilded shield literally doubles our defense. So even if you initially have 500k defense with 2h axe, swapping to shield makes it over a million. I don't have to talk about invictus how insane that item is, even if our build doesn't benifit from %10DR, it is still great choice. Kriegsmesser has decent damage for 1h, +skills and life which makes it a decent option.
Body armor: Two decent chests, I prefere start with steel golem because of good FHR bonus, 5% cb, it also has bonus to important stats (str and vit). Full plate is comparable, we will not get huge damage bonus from str, because our str is just pretty low. 30 DR mod comes handy in QT fight. You can use either, I used gothic plate for big part of the run.
KRA runeword is viable alternative, we lose 5 runes, but defense is so much higher that result total defense of our character remains practically unchanged. We gain better stats (50ias, 500 life..) and stats from 5 extra jewels, which makes this great option, makes up switch to labrys faster thanks to huge ias boost.
Gloves: no other good gloves for us, chain gloves provide us with vital AR bonus and some base dex.
Helm: All tiered unique helms are trash, normal helms too, there is just nothing good, that makes us use runeword. Losing 3 runes costs us defense (compared to 4 runes in unique helm). However fal rw helm is great, massive bonus to all speeds, which helps us especially before you stack more charms.
Boots: unique chain boots are just solid, I prefere them over heavy ones, because +damage bonus on them is worth less when we are using 2h axe with higher base damage. Solid all round item with good stat bonus.
Belt: Normally I would use truce runeword for way more defense, but it isn't as simple, since 10% dr bonus from that belt is useless for us. Another little drawback is losing 1 rune from runemaster bonus pool, which lowers defense gain. But there of course is defense gain if we compare truce to t6 heavy belt unique. 5% CB is nice, as we don't have many sources of that stat, especially early on. I went with deadfall belt.
Rings: Rings might be little painful to get, because there is many unique rings in the game, so creating them in cube might eat lot of crystals if you get unlucky. Thats why you can go with rares, and just work your way towards those if you find crystals. You can also run act bosses and just create them using brute force method. Up to you. 10% life bonus is great to have.
Amulet: same here, except rare could be quite bit better if you find something with high +life. Ideally you also want +1 skill upgrade. I'd say don't worry that much about amulet and ring setup, treat them as your last piece to get with viable alternative in form of rares.

Leveling

1.3 patch Update: Use Shower of Rocks or Deathgaze, rest stays the same
What changed is our aoe/physical skill, SOR can be used with both sword and axes, makes us tankier, isn't really weaker than spiral or gaze in what we are trying to do. It is not very relevant vs bosses, since there you use iceburst/stormblast anyway, but in places like bremmtown, kabraxis, or just clearing areas like duncraig, SOR will serve you well. So every time I mention usage of sword spiral or death gaze, use sor, unless target is physical immune then use iceburst or stormblast.
Another route is going for 6pt (remove cooldown) deathgaze, much better clear speed than sor.

Important note: keep collecting onyxes and ambers (lightning and cold max resists) you gonna need 5 of each for quov tsin. Also keep collecting runes, especially higher ones, so you can downgrade them to get for example SHA runes, and JAH. Another thing worth keeping is blue barb helm t6 or sacred. When you reroll unique rings, keep 1 ripstar.

At this point your character should be level 120 and gear should match the gear section list. It doesn't have to be all perfectly upgraded to req120, as some of the stats might change as we progress with our charms (you for example gonna need less ias, less strength etc). But get the t6 gear, get breakpoints, make sure your resists are capped (use runes and upgrade some rare rings for that).

If you managed to get this far, congratulations, you have completed all ubers with T6/basic RW gear. You probably noticed how strong our character feels by now, raw power of charms. We have the same gear as we did when attempting Butcher, just half of our inventory is now filled with charms. Feel free to improve this character, it can get lot stronger by adding crafts, signets, and better gear. You can also finally respec to more aoe oriented spec and start farming gear.

You should be one step ahead of kabraxis, by ther time he teleports, you should be on the move, never stop to attack him directly. Sword spiral is an aoe, and he will get into its range almost every time he pounces, it will damage him. It might seem like weak damage dealer, but this way you are safe and you never die (at least in theory). It kills him way faster than actually trying to stormblast him,

i think it might be: never try to hit him directly !?

tl;dr

This takes time and effort so awesome job i guess.

But in the end it shows how median turned into ez mode with no challange at all since the latest ovrerhaul and versions.

this causual mod route is just too easy and boring for my taste. If some1 is able to do all content with t6 gear then smthn is rly broken here.

Nothing to take away from ae he is good player with great knowledge and not ev1 is able to achive this but still this shows how "balanced" things are in latest maxl versions.
