Introduction


The summoner barbarian is very easy to level/gear up and probably one of the best farm chars to get started. Using minions as a shield which also deal damage from afar while you can keep away from danger, he excels at traveling speed and farming for gear. The only real downside to this build is it's capability of farming uber bosses. Most of them are possible and rather easy, but some of the level 120 and 125 ubers are quite difficult compared to other builds.

pros:
-good starter char and strong farmer
-fast/easy to level and play through the acts
-cheap to gear up

cons:
-not really a good uber boss killer
(I can currently do around 60% of them with pure summons)
-play style can be a bit boring for some people

mystic orbs: In the early-mid game it can be hard to stack enough resists on our minions, because the items we can get/wear now don't provide much. I ended up putting minion res mos on most parts of my gear, which helped a lot to keep them alive. After this I dumped minion dmg/life more or less equally and the rest were def/mf & some mana regen mos (make sure you get at least some mana regen on your gear, like 25% on one piece should do). For the late game we want to prioritize minion dmg and mf since we are a farm char.
early-mid game: minion res/minion dmg/minion life/magic find
late-end game: magic find/minion dmg/minion res(up to breakpoint)/minion life/def

jewel-crafting: around level 120 you will likely spec out of runemaster and get nephalems spirit. In preparation for this you want to start crafting your own minion jewels. There are unique ones you can buy like

[Tir=mf, Kur=minion dmg] Tir runes are most useful for us, don't reroll jewels below lvl 80
cube recipe: jewel + arcane shard + rune + oil of craft = adds rune specific roll + random stats

shrine-crafting: once we reach the late game and ubers you will want to craft some items, which will boost our dmg & def by a lot. Craft gloves/belt/boots with tainted shrines, blessed with tainted (minion ar/dmg) or magical(minion life/res).
Use high def bases: gauntlets, greaves, plated belt, try to roll + 2skills on belt.
crafting recipe: rare sacred item + shrine = rolls item with shrine boni
blessing recipe: rare/crafted/honorific sacred item + shrine + 2x arcane crystal = add shrine boni roll

sockets: We will use tal/lah runes and gems for the most part until hell. You will want to work on replacing gems with runes once you get Runemaster. I mostly used yul runes in the end to max out minion dmg.

merc: I am currently using A5 merc. He does decent dmg with ancients hand and gift of the wild makes our minions even stronger. He also has a stun nova ability that works together with thundergod to stun enemies quite a lot. Your ability to teleport & the army of minions help to keep him alive. A3 Blood mage is also a good choice for some heal and more elemental dmg. A1 Ranger or Priestress can be good too.

lvl 1-50
The first ~20 levels can be a bit slow if you just put points into spirit skills, luckily earthquake is a really strong 1 pointer and makes leveling much faster at the early stages. You technically don't have to do it and can just rely on spirit skills from the start, but to me it's worth it. You should get wolf stance and spirit guide as soon as you can and put a point into bear stance every couple levels. Progression through normal should overall be rather quick and easy with some random stuff you find along your way. A2 stony tomb and grubbers are good to get some money quickly and Mephisto is the first decent spot to farm arcane crystals, if you run into resistance and want to make some tiered uniques to power up. The 3 most important slots are: weapon, helm and shield.
unique recipe: item base+2arcane crystals+oil of enhancement = returns item as unique
uptier recipe: unique item+random rune+arcane crystal = returns item with increased stats up to T4
The first challenge of median at Baal in norm should also be easy for you with those 3 uniques, check the 115 challenge[1] to see where the 3 bosses are located in Tran Athulua.



lvl 50-100
The only important thing to mention in nightmare is the kurast 3k ennead challenge, which will be available to you at level 80 and can be accessed after killing Mephisto in nightmare. check 115 challenge[1] to see where the 3 Necromancers are located.
Diablo and the seal guardians aren't much of a threat, just might take some resummoning since minions can die quickly to some of the spells.
Same goes for Baal, he is easy but it might take some time and resets to kill him and he can delete you and your minions in an instant with his "defile" spell, indicated by a black circle on the ground. Watch out for that and be ready to retreat back to town if your minions die. Hell should then feel more or less the same as nightmare, upgrade uniques and mos on your gear if you feel too weak and make sure to stack max resists for hell.



lvl 100+
At lvl 105 you should be near a4 in hell and can start farming the uber areas.
Island of sunless sea: I like to farm this for gold & fast xp from 105 to 110.
hell cows: fast xp from 110 to 115 until we can farm k3k, can drop some items too.
Kurast 3K: farm this until lvl 120 for crafting bases/mats, also good for some gear and signets/gold. prioritize totems when they are nearby.

You should also get used to town portal out if your minions suddenly get rekt by some aoe, because it often takes too long to resummon everything during a fight. Use Jitans gate to get your minions or yourself out of danger. Another thing you can do is use left-click for summoning so you can keep stances up permanently during a fight (im usually too lazy for this). magic find & farming


One important thing to note about farming and magic find in particular are the diminishing returns mf suffers, that really start to kick in around the 500-700 mark.

I tried to visually enhance this effect that applies especially to unique drops, which are most desirable/valuable. As you can see effective magic find doesn't raise linearly, but in a curve and unique drops have the steepest curve. One exception from this rule are magic items, which scale linearly. Mf also doesn't increase the quantity of items dropped, only the chance to get a higher quality (magic instead of normal, rare instead of magic etc.)
You just need to find a value you feel comfortable with. 400-500mf is easily enough to find items, stacking 400% more will still help but can take a long time and effort. More elaborate info: median mf

Teganze: this place is really laid back to farm for us, just teleport from pack to pack and try to avoid their projectiles a bit while doing so. Be careful not to move too much by walking when you loot, because those projectiles do a lot of dmg if they hit you.
You can use wolf stance here.


Duncraig: use bear stance here and pay attention to the barrels. From my experience not much can happen except the occasional hit if u teleport about half a screen every 1-2 seconds. It can get rough if u do something like p8 runs but solo its pretty easy.


Fauztinville/Bremmtown: Fauz is easy as well, the necrobots are kinda tanky for us, just ignore them for the most part. For Bremmtown you will want to advance carefully. Use Jitans gate and be ready to teleport close to you when you walk,-only make small steps

How much minion resistance do you need in Hell? I didn't see it listed.

Edit: I guess it's capped at 75? I put a few too many resist jewels then. My d2stats says 84% minion resist. I had a really rough time with Horazon, the fire just melts all summons instantly. They have 300% life and 430% damage according to d2stats. I hope it will be better as I go on.

Some aoe spells from bosses can do alot of dmg and kill minions quite fast, im not sure if you can do much against that. I have about same %minion life in d2stats and it seems to be well enough for farming the end game areas. You are probably lacking base str/levels, which boost it by quite alot.

I honestly wasn't sure about the minion res. I did some search for it but best I could find is info from old median xl threads. Tried some Teganze testing and 75% seems to be correct. Not sure if you want to overstack minion resists. Again its kinda hard to find info on this but some mobs/bosses do have spells/abilities that lower or pierce resistances.(mythal), uber quest -the binding of baal-"Beware the Horadrim's fire and lightning spells, empowered with ancient metamagic to bypass up to 30% of your resistances, Tal Rasha able to bypass 40%."

I will make a breakpoint section (kind of missing anyways) and list the 75% there for now since our focus is on farming and i remember doing most of the bosses with around 75%.

edit: not sure if your 300% minion life is with shamanic trance active
