There are still immunes, and there's no real benefit to "maxing one tree" over another, besides where specific synergies drive it. Furthermore, you're going to two trees to a certain degree anyway, for the defensive benefits alone.

Cold tree provides defence and meatshields, lightning tree gives main damaging skills (and defence, too).
You won't get far just using one skill tree. I had idea to use only pure lightning using "Mistress of Pain" SSU, but meh, defence is 1/2 of what i had with weaker meatshields and i should give up very good skill (StF), for me it's def. not worth few saved skillpoints.

Well, going with fire you won't have very good meatshields and StF. Currently my elementals have > 50K life IIRC and rarely die, even with 14K life and half million defence i still need them to tank in many areas.
Sure, you get firedance and flamestrike, also some life from living flame but...

in inventory, luckied with oil and good jewels - level and SD is approx the same level as frozen sphere/thunderstone (just a little less pierce) - still not so outdamages other spells around. It probably can be most damaging stationary target spell, but you won't have enough mana to cast it (drains 20K mana in 2 seconds or so).
So far best stationary target damage spell is abyss, just it is so hard to target (esp. on desynced servers). Second one is probably stormfront.
This sorc has very good crowd cleaning spells (fautzt, bremm....), you just run/blink and everything dies around; but nothing really good for single target. Get another class (or go melee maybe)? ;-)

For fun and for testing "single-target" respecced to melee sorc. I think i took end-game items, like good roll Steel Punisher with Taha and 4x UMO; ElXis good roll ceremonial, akarats, auhe belt, royal circlet, etc.
Not sure if it does more single target damage. For cleaning crowds it has approx the same speed, but at least on edyrem path caster is much faster (even using charged strike (and running out of mana even with farnham UMO's) i still kill bosses slower compared to caster).
So maybe caster sorc is not that bad at all ;-)
(my wormhole is "caster" and umbaru is targeted for energy, but this should not make huge difference).
