Hello all, this walkthrough is aimed at helping people create better quality guides.

This helps the forum in multiple ways:
  • Helping newcomers find the information they need about a spec they want to play
  • Helping players who need a quick reference to the things they need (Skill layout, items, etc.)
  • Creating more easily readable guides, so players don't feel overwhelmed by 'ugly' guides
    • E.g. walls of text, unformatted text, etc.

In this first post, I will be going through the different parts that a guide should have, why you should have them, and a nice way to lay them out.
In the second post, I will post the code for a template that is basically "fill in the blanks". The first template will have an inclusion of pictures, which is highly recommended to help your guide seem more professional.

For those who just want a template and don't care about some of the techniques to write a better guide, skip to the second post.

There are some basic things we can do to make our guides look better, and/or portray the information we want better. Let's run down a quick list of them:
  • Pictures
  • Text (Color, Size, etc.)
  • Paragraphs
  • Videos
These simple things can greatly help your guide, and make people more wanting/willing to read it. Let's go ahead and take a look at each of these items.

Image
Pictures can mainly be used in two different ways. They are good for breaking up different sections of your guide, and good for portraying things that are hard to articulate. As they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words". However, as great as pictures are, an overuse of pictures is just as bad; That phrase is not to be taken as "I should fill my guide with pictures, then I don't even need text!".

A picture for breaking up sections (Such as when going from stats to skills, skills to equipment, etc.) is a great way of letting a reader know they are entering into a different section of the guide. It also lets them, at a quick glance/scroll-through stop where they need, to get the information they want.

A picture for portraying is good for things such as Runewords or crafted items. A big wall of text with the stats these items should have isn't always the best, so having a picture of a "near-perfect" version generally equates to an easier comparison for people when trying to shoot for those perfect attributes. Now, this doesn't mean just plop a picture and move on. A picture used in this context should always be accompanied with some text explaining stats that aren't super obvious (Subjective to the audience you're writing your guide for), and just a general statement of the aim for this item.

Image
Use of colors and various sizes of font can make a "good" guide into a "great" guide when used correctly. On the other side, overuse of these can make a guide uneasy to read.

Colors and font size are usually used for things such as titles, skill names, important stats in a list, etc.. Now a big thing with colors to remember is that quite a big part of the population (4.5%) is colorblind, and it can be hard to see certain colors. There are certain color combinations you can avoid that can ease this: Green & Red, Green & Brown, Blue & Purple, Green & Blue, Light Green & Yellow, Blue & Grey, Green & Grey, & Green & Black (Source). If you're worried about this issue, you can find a few more tips in the link provided.

Another thing with color is the overuse of them, making your guide look worse than if it was without those colors. Something like this is not fun to read, and does not make your guide look better.
Remember to that certain colors are hard to read on the background. Light colors (Such as yellow, light green, 'neon', etc.) are next to impossible to read on the light background this forum uses.

Example:
Example of a good color to use.
Example of a bad color to use.

Image
Paragraphs are a must for making your guide readable. No one wants to read walls of text, and most people will either completely skip over these 'walls' or even worse close your guide altogether. Large pieces of text should be split into paragraphs; Either when you are finished with a point or you want to change the topic.

As you may have noticed in this guide, there are horizontal lines (Or 'breaks'), which can help to break up sections also. To do this, simply type:

Code: Select all

[hr][/hr]

Image
Videos for something like a guide are generally only used to show a recording of a specific uber, or demonstrate the builds strength in certain situations. At the time of this guide, there are very few (Or no) videos that showcase the entire build in a video format, although this can be a very effective method, when paired with the text for the build. This is very important, as you still need to have a written guide, with the video being an optional way to view the build. You can see great examples of a written guide with a video guide on many Diablo 3 builds (Look up quin69 on diablofans.com, for example).

With these few simple steps, we can now create a professional, 'beautiful', and precise guide. Let's get into what actual content we need to put in our guide, and a nice layout to do so.

As we did above let's run down a quick list of the things we should include in our guide. This list will change depending how in-depth you want to get, or who your target audience is (Newb friendly, basic MXL knowledge, or pro players).
  1. Introduction
  2. Final Stats
  3. Final Skills
  4. Leveling
  5. Early Game Build
  6. Early Game Gear
  7. Midgame Build
  8. Midgame Gear
  9. Endgame Build
  10. Endgame Gear
  11. Challenges
  12. Uberquests
  13. Multimedia
  14. Credits

Introduction
This should give a quick overview of the build. Short, sweet, and concise is the goal here. Some good points to hit are the tankiness of the build, damage output, and any specific skills. Although not mandatory, a pros and cons list is always a nice way of summarizing the build in a precise manner.

Final Stats
Here you list the stat distribution the build will use end-game. A simple list is sufficient, unless explanation is needed. This is nice to have right at the beginning so readers can get a quick glance right at the start.

Example of a caster character:
Strength: Enough for gear.
Dexterity: Enough for gear.
Vitality: None.
Energy: All the rest.

Final Skills
There is two ways to go about the skills in this specific section: 1) A quick list, kind of like the 'Final Stats', and go more in-depth about skill choices in the "Endgame Build" section, or 2) An in-depth look at the skills here, and a quick list in the "Endgame Build" section. To better match with the 'Final Stats', and for reader usability, option 1 is recommended. This is because, as stated above, it allows the reader to get a quick glance as to what skills to get, without having to scroll through the guide.

The Skillpoint Planner is an excellent tool, and can be used to either link to a build or post the interactive image of the build right into your guide. Please remember, use the gear icon in the top right and accordingly add/remove check marks in the appropriate boxes.

Example:
Balance, Pounce, Lioness - Smax
Curare - 15 pts
Wild and Free - 10 pts
Defensive Harmony, War Spirit, Great Hunt - 1 pt

<Link to the Skillpoint Planner>

Leveling
This section is nice to have, especially for newbie guides. Here you can explain basic leveling tips and tricks for your character. Despite what people may think, leveling is different for every character/spec, so providing even some basic advice to help readers will help them appreciate your guide more. In this section, you can either explain some tips for each part of the game (Early, mid, endgame) or add that into those specific sections below.

Making sure to mention the level-restricted Challenges (Level Challenge 0, 1, & 2, and the Ennead Challenge) is a very, very good idea here. This will help readers not miss these challenges and become frustrated. No one wants to have to redo their character to complete these challenges, so ensuring the reader knows when, and how to do these challenges is never a bad thing.

Early Game Build
Here you list the skill setup for an early game build; This can either be pre-120 or level 120 pre-Destruction. Again, using the Skillpoint Planner to give people a visual representation of the skill layout is a great addition to any guide. A build at this stage of the game will generally have 130 skill points to play around with; This is the points from leveling to 120, plus all skill quests for Hatred and Terror.

As discussed in the 'Final Skills' section, here is where you can explain the skill choices more in-depth, clarifying why certain skill were chosen. Giving a basic explanation of what each skill does is a nice addition, especially for newbies, and can help to make your guide feel more "complete". Discussing the uber skill choice here is a nice place to put it, as you get this skill at level 90, which is part of the early game by general guide standards.

If you didn't cover each specific part of the games leveling in the above section, here is where you add it in for the early game.

Early Game Gear
Listing gear is done differently by everyone. A nice way I've found that helps to prevent bland looking walls of text is to enclose the stats of the equipment in a quote tag, and then explain more about the item outside this tag. This helps to very easily differentiate the item and its stats from other text in the guide. A general practice is to either bold or color the stats that are important to your specific character/spec. This helps inform people which attributes are significant, and can help them even branch off and find their own items (Which helps build diversity, and can help create more variety in builds!).

Gear for this part of the game should include pre-100 (Preferably even pre-50) Runewords, Tiered Uniques, and/or Honorifics.

Midgame Build
Midgame is generally defined as a level 120 character that has completed Destruction (Or everything less Baal). You should be able to clear some of the easier Uberquests, and slowly start dabbling in of the medium-difficulty ones too. A build at this stage encompasses 134 skill points, the points from leveling to 120 plus all skill quests for each difficulty. Don't forget by midgame that all Minigame and the Ennead Challenge should be completed, so make sure those "+1 Maximum Skill Level" check boxes are marked in the skill planner.

If a re-specialization is necessary between the early game skillplan and this one, you should note this, and optionally explain why this was done to help the reader understand the transition. A quick explanation of why the amount of points for each skill was put in is a nice addition, although an explanation of the skill is not needed, as this was done in the early game section.

Midgame Gear
Same as the early game gear, except this gear should include Tier 6 Uniques, pre-great rune Runewords, and/or Honorifics. Make sure you layout the gear the same as in the early game section (And again in the late game section), so we have a nice looking, standardized layout.

Endgame Build
For endgame, you have, again, 134 skill points to play around with. This time, you can check off some of the easier "+1 Maximum Skill Level" charms, making sure to only do ones which are easily obtainable with midgame gear. At this point, you should explain the final builds point distribution, and can even compare why some skills were chosen over others if applicable.

Again, if a re-specialization was necessary, you should state so to help avoid confusion.

Endgame Gear
This is the list of the final gear set readers should be shooting for. You can optionally make an "Ultimate Gear" section, where you include SSSU's and Elemental Rune Runewords, and use this endgame section for SU, SSU's, and pre-Elemental Rune Runewords.

Explaining gear choices here, and how to properly MO each piece is critical for this part of the guide. This gear is the final point readers are farming for, so precise information is key to help them get their character to the best it can be. Giving a few options for each slot, if applicable, is a nice feature to have, allowing readers to not feel confined to find a certain item, or feeling like they cannot succeed with the character without that certain item.

Challenges
Explaining how to approach each Challenge (LC0, LC1, LC2, Ennead, Black Road, & Minigames) is a nice addition to a guide. Each character has to go at the Challenges differently, so explaining how your spec can optimally do them is a good thing. If you went in-depth into explaining the level-restricted challenges in the 'Leveling' section, a nice concise summary of what you previously said, or even a "Refer to the 'Leveling' section" will do.

Uberquests
There are generally two different ways to list all the different Uberquests: 1) In documented order, or 2) In order of difficulty for this character. The second option is definitely a more widely used way of listing them, as it allows the reader to more easily understand what ubers they should attempt, and what ones come next.

Color coding is a general practice to indicate difficulty (Green for Easy, Orange for Medium, Red for Hard), although we need to remember certain colors being hard to read on the background of the forums (And for the color blind). A scaling system may be a better option, or taking care in the colors you choose.

In this section, for each uberquest, you should post the strategy for your character/spec to complete this uber. Explaining the uber itself is a great idea, and even providing the map for the uber can really help players who have never been inside these ubers get a better grasp on what to do. The gear level (Early, mid, or endgame) required for the uber is also a nice addition.

If you have never attempted the uber (Or have yet to), you should simply state so. Theorycrafting or "snowballing" a half-witted strategy is never good, and can turn off players if it doesn't work.

Multimedia
Include any screenshots, videos, or other media you have that pertains to your character/spec. This is a great place to show off those cool looking screenshots, or uber run videos of the spec in action. Make sure for screenshots to either appropriately size them or link to an album of them (Imgur does this nicely).

Credits
Lastly, it's always nice to give a shout out to anyone who helped you with your guide. Throw a thanks to BrotherLaz for the mod, and MarcoNecroX for keeping it alive. Don't make this section a movie credit though, short and sweet!

And there we go! Everything you need to know about writing an effective guide. Below is the template for a guide, which is a sort of "fill in the blank" thing, so you can create your own slick looking guide! Change anything that is between the < >, and you're good to go!
At the bottom of the template is the code (Inside the spoiler) for you to copy and paste for your own guide, enjoy!

Please, feel free to leave any constructive feedback to help improve this guide, to help others in creating their own character guides more easily.

Lol, im using dark forum theme from food, good font and bad font is switched.

Guide look nicer in default theme, but not in dark theme.

If you really want to focus on this, there should be some code snippet, guide theme to use or a good offline guide editor suggestion.

Wolfie your second post somehow went into a new topic. I edited the first reply in here to contain the intended text (rip somnus).

Will do a detailed read through later and give some comments, but it looks nice at first glance. You might want to make the code template in the bottom spoiler more prominent as it is the most important part of your second post.

You're 100% correct, I switched the code to the top of the second post and added some instructions/text.

ChuckNoRis wrote:still waiting for the [item] BBcode to be implemented . that will be so usefull

There is a pseudo way to do this, but it's a lot of typing. Check out suchbalance's guides to see it in action.
Thanks ChuckNoRis for the link, hopefully they will implement this soon as you said :) !

Fair enough, although I don't have the dark theme, and think it would be difficult to find a color that works on both. However, if you find me colors that are good and bad on both, I will change it!
