Naginata build have been sullied for years, considered at best too hard and skill switchy, at worst pure suicide, and most of the time both. To nearly all players she looks like some pityful creature that get one shotted and can't do anything without proper gear.
As someone autistic enough to play this build since sigma 1.0, muliple time, because it's my favorite by far, always solo self found, I will tell you the truth after starting 1.6 with yet another one : SHE STRONK.
Well I do agree that 1.0 were hard times, and understand perfectly her reputation. But after some very juicy buffs, especially 1.6 ones, she now is coming strong and definitly do not deserve that. The true piece in most people prejudgment is simultaneously my favorite part of nagisin and the point they can't get into ; There, indeed, is a lot of skills to use and know when to do so. You can't just spam the same skill from afar for the whole game and/or facetank everything, and have to choose them efficiently. This is a very active playstyle, meaning most death you will have often are errors in decision making or not reacting fast enough. If like me you like it that way, welcome, take your time in there.
As said Assassin have lots of tools. Apparently some call this build "piano sin" because of how many skills you have to use and switch to constently. I have good news for you : It's even worse than you think ! And by that I mean good ! This versatility is very satisfying, and while Naginata Assassin is nor the fastest farmer nor boss killer, she can do both exteremely well without respec, and clear every ubers on Solo Self Found gear. It does take some preparations and carefulness in some part, but by taking it slowly there's no real « wall » Nagi have to face, outside of very high lab of course (T13 onward is big rip for me). I'd even say she's hardcore viable, and I am completly serious.
I ended recording the entierety of my 1.6 SSF playthrough, so if you want to see anything, feel free to check whatever of the nearly 60h of content I uploaded (lol). It was a cool and fun run, it have some ugly part of course but I still loved playing it.
Anyway let's see what thoses tool are first, then in the walkthrough part I'll share my experiences, with videos, explanations, and gear recommandations.
SKILLS
What make assassin's skillplan interesting is that there is no lock. Unlike most others characters, we are free to put our points between every trees and we sure will.
Complete list of every useful skills and build details

Innate skill

Buff that need a melee swing to proc, give life on kill bonus for 10 seconds. (only...)
Throwing knife Tree

Basically our strongest and most impressive skill. Launch a barrage of knifes at 90% weapon damage. It's safe, doesn't have that long of a cd (7 seconds when maxed) and will DESTROY both bosses and packs. Skill is so strong you can do lots of content with only this ; Just watch it go brrrr and wait for it's cd to come again, and repeat. Well it's not optimal to just wait so let's use other things too
MAX
Naginata Tree

Naginata soul, important enough to made me put it in my left clic. At level 1, the skill count as a big attack (200% weapon damage) that give 100% avoid, and bonus magic damage to broadside for 0.1 second, i.e 3 frames.
The cooldown and cloak duration increase with hard points (points invested in the skill without taking account of +skills). We want to increase it to have more control of the invulnerability, and to take profit of the absurd magic damage bonus it give to broadside. How much is a matter of preference, too low is unconfortable to play and too high not worth the points investement. I personally like putting 7, just enough to make the cd duration the same as maxed broadside, so they can be toegether and live happily, while having a long enough immunity to use the skill defensively very well. So if you have « broadside cooldown reduction », putting less points is even better. More than 7 is just to show off and rekt bosses harder in a single broadside and brag to your friend how you can one shot x with one broadside>backstab only, but it's not worth in the long run.
7 points

Buff Similar to bloodbath but actually give good stats. %physical resistance and movement speed are always good things to have. Nobody know what the "physical damage" part is referring to tho, as the attack itself doesn't look like it hurt.
Early game (until ~120) put your remaining points here, around 10. Then one is enough, +skills level from gears and charm will take care of it.

One of my favorite skill and also why I picked up Naginata originally, at the start of sigma. This skill is in median since very long and I have lots of good memories with it. Anyway it's another melee attack, that surround you in shurikens, blocking most ennemies and dealing 100% weapon damage. In some situations just doing one barrier strike can change everyting defensivly. It also is a good hit and run option, and can create space, all the while doing a lots of damage especially in dense places. The goal is not to spam it tho, but to know where and when it's the most useful and get it. Well it's not... That important in reality, and you can choose to not use it much, but you'll make me sad.
1 point

Passive that give bonus %total character defense and magic damage on weapon depending on base dexterity. By far the best passive we have.
Max until ~120, then all your remaning points.

Targeting an enemy corpse with this skill will make you teleport to it(or at least close to), then does 110% weapon damage to the whole screen. Once buffed with bloodbath, Hades Gates cd is reduced by 4 seconds and become the main "spam" skill you use when farming very dense places, the more thing there's on screen the better. As one of our only non melee attack, and the fact that you can move a lot make Hades Gates usually pretty safe, unless it decide to tp you not where you clicked but in the middle of the pack instead because the skill is dumb dumb if there's lots of corpses, and bloodbath decide to end right there. Good luck then !
Exactly 5 points to have no cd when buffed
Martial Tree

Low cd teleport skill. As a bonus it stuns ennemies in a little zone around you but don't belive in that too much. Putting 6 points make 3 second cd, if you're lazy or don't belive in this spell 2 points for 4 seconds is often enough, if you're autistic and want to push to 2 seconds you'll need 19 points. And if you push to 32 points you can have 1.8 seconds ! wow ! (don't)
6 points (1 when you get teleport from charm, it's a 3 sec cooldown tp given freely)

Ways are passive that grant elemental damage to the weapon, they are strong if you max them, and absolutly useless if you put anything between 1 and your max point. For a long time I were convinced spider is the strongest for early. After all you're doing 200% area weapon damage with backstab, and 110% on the whole screen with Hades Gate, heavy weapon poison damage in theses conditions is super satisfying and clean up really good, right? It's true my friend, but my experiences show forgetting this skill entierly and putting everything in laserblade is about 10 time better, even for leveling. So adios, I'm boycotting this now. Can be maxed in late game for pure farming purpose, either in an "elemental" set up with every way maxed, or alone with poison pierce gear.
1 point

Seemingly useful buff that launch autmatically shurinken to enemies, it does weapon damage and proc "on striking" bonus you might have. It's cool but not worth investing into. Keep it activated as it give free 15% IAS, it's not written anywhere but eh, trust d2stats and practice not the game tips.
1 point

Fire way, it's cool and all but we don't have enough points for him.
1 point

Give passivly high avoid chance, mendatory skill that give Assassin a chance to live. If you are lucky.
MAX but not quite : Every 4 levels, giving a +1 will grant you absolutly nothing, so if your max skill level is 21 for exemple you want to stop at 20 since the 21th point will be useless. You may think of your future and put it anyway but don't be surprised if your dodge chance doesn't move.
Reward Tree

Our second survival passive, reduce every incoming magic/elemental damage. Increased while bloodbath is active (around +40% bonus), and a little bit of max % life. Very cool
MAX

Strongest way by far after unlocking it since it require less points than the others -about half the points compared to way of the spider- to make even more damage. Simple. In the case you still want to invest in spider only for some reasons, forget this one and put a point in beacon(other reward skill) instead for the free movement speed it give.
MAX

Pretty underestimated skill, it's a spell you can use from afar, and putting it in the middle of an enemy pack will most of the time instantly regen all you life. It's kinda tricky and the regen depend on how much the enemies "allow" life leech, so it's not useful against most bosses, and in rifts it's better to just attack... but still useful, I swear...
1 point, or 0 if you see you never use it. Miss something like "give bloobath upon killing something insode the icon" or something to maybe make it worthwhile.
TRAP TREE

We want this for the bonus max cold and fire resist.
It does say : "only allow trap, melee, summoning and buff/debuff skills", but I am happy to announce that Broadside is not a projectile skill since you're using a melee weapon (4head) and Vampiric Icon not a spell. What, does the game say otherwhise or something? (it's was done so trapsin can use it I'm aware don't worry)
Absolutly nothing change for us. After testing a lot, the only change I saw is that batstrike 2nd use, familiar summoning, does nothing. It's not a reference telling they're so bad they are not considered summonings, it's just that the passive only allow Edryem summon. (you get this summon in a lvl 120 quest)
Give +1 max res with 1 point, +2 with 4 and +3 with 8. Putting 8 may feel like going too far but it depend on how much you value max res. I do. A lot. Especially since it's fire and cold ; They are very common damages in Median, the two best elemental resists to have for sure.
8 points
Wait did I say batstrike? eheh it's coming
CLAW TREE

Versatile attack you can spam freely early on. Strong in normal but get more and more useless as time go on.
1 point, can be 0 later

Ok hear me out, you can use batstrike with a naginata. The skill work like a lot of martial art skills from original diablo 2, you have to "charge" up to 3 attacks, and then release it with a basic attack. The 1st is pretty useless, does some sort of weak nova, 2nd is familiar summon, they are litteraly trash and will die fast so it's useless. But the 3rd, Coup de Grace, does a lot of single target damage, as it release a lot of spike in a little area, each of them having 200% weapon damage.
To use it it's very simple : you switch weapon to a claw, charge, switch back, and keep it as much as you want, then release it with a basic attack

So, em, did we just add two new hotkey to use -batstrike + basic attack- AND the use of weapon swap to the legendary piano sin? -yes
It's very strong in normal, then, after just a little bit of skill level, Broadside does way more single target damage and is stronger overall, but Coup de Grace has it's uses. Most important is that you can control exactly what it does while Broadside will just target everyting in it's range stupidly. This control is useful in some ubers. I also just like to come against bosses with charged batstrike for a little bonus. This skill is very satisfying to use since it's kinda « assassin-like ». But is it really strong or game changing? absolutly not lol. It were before, but now broadside is so strong this skill doesn't shine. Hardest part in this is that neither the claw attack or coup de grace leech at all, so it's very hard to charge freely (claw attack litteraly is basic attack that do nothing and coup de grace damage is all converted to magic, only physical damage leech). Not to mention the awkward weapon swapping, or bosses high dodge chance/block(both charging and releasing doesn't work if the attack doesn't hit, so even the boss just moving away from us is enough to make it miss, kinda ridiculous situation. Good point is that playing around it make you physically feel the importance of attack rating), the fact that they will just tp out of the skill way before they take all the damage...
So this "bug exploit" is absolutly not unbalanced and not a problem in my opinion, actually it suit nagisin very well -way more than claw builds where nobody use this skill- and hope it will never get corrected.
1 point, or 0 if you see you never use it
TLDR skill so bad that even a naginata insane base damage can't save it outside of some really specific situations -Thoses being mostly astrogha, and a little bit of void-, and most of the thing you'll see me one shot later also go down in a single whirlpool all the same, I just love using it so let me.

Now we talk, this skill alone solve every of our problems. It help for both farming faster in places hades gates is not strong enough -also to create corpses- and for bosses when broadside is on cd. It's 10 time better than crucify, more consistent than coup de grace since it leech a lot and do about the same damage on an ennemy staying inside the whole time, with no need to put ourselves at risk with some charging. It's just too good. The only oskill i'd say is mendatory. Beware though, this is not supposed to become your main skill, it's there to support what we already have, dropping one sometime every few seconds is what feel the best from my experience.

Interesting as a movement skill, make you pounce at ennemies without cd. It's cool to rush though zones, farm trophies or just tp in and still keep blink defensively. Having a shunpo nagi at hand is useful, but I don't use it on my main weapon usually, since having the skill with actual decent damage is pure miracle, and even then I'm not convinced « losing » an affixe to get this is worth. I recommand making a second nagi that have it, and use it situationnaly. If you want to, farming with shunpo can work. It's kinda lacking alone as it have about half the damage of hades gates and a smaller area but it go well with whirlpool, it's pretty satisfying to just move from pack to pack and let whirlpool do the job. But we're not some kind of spear amazon so let's forget that.

Give +weapon damage for 1--2+ min buff depending on your +skills level, not insane but it can be putted on the swap weapon claw without any investement, it's a cool free little bonus.

Originally we only want The Endless Loop for it's stats and easy availability, and get this skill in the process. An attack that release weapon damage charged bolt behind it, very simple. Useful but not mendatory in some ubers, basically it have the same uses as batstrike ; small area -or at least a spread we can control- damage for single target uses.

. I see some people using atmg with claw recently. It made me remember very old time, were I didn't even know you could use broadside with a Naginata, I did my first ever Quov Tsin clear with this skill because I couldn't go melee against him. The skill... probably have it's use even now, in some places. But are theses items worth only for that? Absolutly not. Playing around claw is way better for ATMG, and we have no ubers difficult enough to make us want it. Not to mention it doesn't work with subterfuge, boooooBattle Devices

Trivia : -In game tip of backstab say it give "immunity" during cloacking time, but is in practice 100% avoid. This is slightly different since "charges attacks"(the thing when enemies charge and do a crushing blow animation) bypass avoid entierly and will hit. Noticably some bats, snakes, and Fallen Hero are concerned. It's not really a problem and no rifts are concerned but it's cool to know.
-Broadside has a bug ; if you're put into "stuck" animation during it's cast, the spell will go, but the game consider it was concelled and his cd still up, so you can put 2 broadside next to each others. The first one will do no damage though of course
-Broadside attack speed always is the same, but since each skill level add 2 knifes, it's duration increase. After putting
Zular Khan's Tempest
, to have 4 second cd, I could test that to have it's duration exactly the same as it's cd, broadside need to launch 104 knifes, witch is level 42. So broadside launch around 26 knifes per second, and if you want an infinite broadside with a normal 7 sec cd, you'll need 182 knifes, so... 81 skill level. Good luck with that ! That's all estimations don't take the number as pure science, but it's about that.

- Afterword :
As you can imagine with that many skill, personnal preferences come a lot, and is one of the strong point of the build, in my opinion.
That's why just explaining the playstyle here is not optimal, and the reason I'll try to put the most videos I can in the walkthrough section. The basic idea that bosses are broadside spam and rifts hades gates spam work, so in theory it's simple. But we can do better than that. Way better.
The skillplan and way of playing I'm presenting here is my favorite way of approaching this character, and what I think work the best in an Solo Self Found play overall.

My recommanded base set up : (9 points in backstab were 1.6 values, now 7 points is the best)
For leveling :

Level 120 : Transfer shadow refuge points to new "+ maximum skill level" needs, should look like this :

My favorite set up there, can do all content nicely, fun to play, no problems only gaming
End game pure farming (mostly fauztinville) possible sets up (optional) :
Hybrid set up : Originally centered around
Elemental set up : remove your broadside, backstab and defensive passive points to put everything in every ways and Laserblade, and just clear everything with Hades Gates spam, or Shunpo/Pounce even why not. Straightforward but not to my liking, not having broadside make you lose too much efficiency and fun to not get much, if not nothing at all even with a good gear and enough elemental pierce. Showcase (ty Controlledanger)
Poison set up : Search for poison and elemental pierce in gear to get to 135%, max way of the spider. Optionnal : remove way of the gryphon points to put one in Beacon (+50% movement speed). This set up work well even with next to no gear(outside of pierce of course, that's mendatory) and become pretty fast with investement, work well in fauzt and make duncraig pretty smooth. I like Hybrid set up way more, but feel free to try if you like poison. Shunpo poison showcase (ty Acry )
May look like a lot of information to take, but basically if you play it like me we only need 2 respec for the whole game, so no belladonna needed. One to remove shadow refuge points at 120 and one to remove blink points after getting teleport skill from void charm, to get to the "Hybrid set up" and farm fauzt until lvl 140.
Ok I lied, you might want more respec later because Laz, Samael and Lab all demand specific set ups. But it's so late into the game(litteraly the last 3 quests) you'll get all the bellas in the world by now. And that's if you even want to do theses contents.

Zular Khan's Tempest
but work well even without it, very simple : you remove some defensive passives (7 from subterfuge and the rest from prismatic cloak and a little bit of perfect being), to max way of the Phoenix and laserblade. It's litteraly trading tankyness for damage and faster clear when you feel at ease in there, simple and straightforward, I like it. Also if you have Zular Khan, having only 4 points in backstab is perfect. This set up is my favorite for farming in general, especially fauzt and Teganze (not like there's much more end game farming places). Tempest is just so satisfying.

Stats
---> ALL DEX <----
Putting too much strength during leveling is a common beginner trap, and with Naginata it's even more important to avoid it because of laserblade's scaling with base dex. If you're afraid of -req jewels you can put a little, but never, never more than 50 or something. As of late I really am playing the whole game with 0 and it feel better than ever. Str in gear and charm is really important in the end because of that.

Simply put Halberd have better base attack speed but both Naginata and Halberd end up with 7 frame animation. As nagi have better base damage, you always want to stay with it in the end (Unless you use one of the Sacred unique ones of course). Claw have faster casting than the others so it may be useful to cast things/summon edryem with it in very rare situations.

The key point behind thoses items is to get quickly some attack speed and life steal, it's the two most important stats early on with resistances
--- Sockets : On weapon : Perfect Sapphire and ruby are super useful for early mana and life regen, rest is Perfect skulls for damage, then Jah runes when you can. On armor : Perfect Ametysts/io runes and resitances gems ( Turquoise, Amber, Onyx, Bloodstone )
--- Mystics orb : When
Na-Krul's Spine
is tier 4, one or two mana steal ones to be at ease forever → oil of luck → enhanced damage until 200%(not counting the bonus from sockets) → Enhanced weapon damage → 1-2 life steal → Deadly strike. Upgrade whenever you have the level requirement. Nagi and Honorific Boots will use all your money already so no need for more for now

Early gameplay and Milestones
► Show Spoiler
---As a true nagisin, the first thing we do after spawning in this world is gambling for your weapon, an Halberd (as they have better base attack speed than naginata) and buy basic gray stuff. After destroying blood moor with crucify magic, you should end up lvl 4 which allow you to have enough dexterity to hold the holy weapon.
--- Quickly kill Blood Raven, you absolutly want a Priestress mercenary. Trust me she'll be your bestie for the whole run.
Take act 1 waypoints as you progress, they are useful to check for shrines, experience and stamina shrine especially are useful for going fast during leveling, and stamina duration is almost the same as it's respawn time.
--- Don't forget to buff yourself with queen of blade for it's 15% bonus attack speed.
Pick up every Halberd and Nagi you can find, every weapon boost is important for now, and each time you find a higher tier one create
--- Gameplay is a little bit stiff at this point because we need attack speed to be at ease, but by no mean it should be hard, as you have enough defensive options with barrier strike and backstab immunity, enough clear with crucify/some random hades gates and no bosses in normal can survive a single broadside + backstab + coup de grace (except ancients for some reasons but who care).
--- Ancient tunnel in act 2, lost city is a good place to get some xp. In normal and nightmare going for it one time will be enough to get ahead, and never lose this lead.
--- Finishing Act 3 should give enough arcane crystal to make
Upon killing shenk in act 5, you can craft honorific boots on a random base with low requirement, to put later missing resists, vita, dex, hit recovery and str in it (don't spend all your money now, no need for all that already).
Skills order : Focus on maxing laserblade and Broadside, and putting 5 points in Hades Gates as soon as it's possible (should be lvl 44), and distribute the remaining points between backstab (until 8), shadow refuge(around 10), and Perfect Being(this can go up more slowly, no need to be maxed fast). Only start taking subterfuge points later when your resist are maxed of course.
--- After killing baal's last wave, it will spawn a portal to Tran Athulua, the first challenge. You have to kill the 3 priestress to get a very nice charm. It's super easy so you're free to blink in very agressivly, don't worry even one second
--- Don't forget to get every quest that give bonuses : +skill from den, radament and Izual, others things from charsi's quest, Lam esen tome, jade thing and Anya resist scroll.
Other interesting quest are countess, Hellforge and act 5 barb save as they all give sweet runes (even sometime a jackpot great rune from the hellforge, if it does and you get a Krys or auhe ggwp. Normal and nightmare countess should be useless but if you're in need you can go )
--- Nihlathak is the best to go for if you're in need for fast crystals, he always give 3 uniques and running him last about a minute. Farming him a few time in normal to make just one or two other unique is not mendatory at all but make an even easier nightmare.
--- Always focus on upgrading weapon before creating or upgrading anything else (levels requirements are 9, 29, 47, 57, for tier (1) (2) (3) (4) of the nagi), then attack speed things(gloves, helm) --> Belt → Body armor. Once everything is upgraded to (4), Next crystals will be used for jewel crafting
--- As said in gear section, after having
No need to rush certains items, some runeword and random uniques can fill temporarily very well :
End of normal strength goal : 88 is enough to wear every unique to tier (2), you don't need to uptier fast so focus on dexterity ! (if possible get a little bit of strength from boots or something, the less base points we have in it the better, for laserblade scaling)
End of nightmare goal : 186 str – enough for every uniques to (4), enough to put on sacred boots with -requirement jewels and mystic orbs in it. Going higher than that depend on your drops.
--- Upon killing nightmare Mephisto, you can enter challenge 2, birds can slow you a lot with their cold damage, but with either a little bit of life steal or whirlpool abusing it's fine. Totems are there to buff other enemies around them and are surrounded by pretty dangerous lightning, even with maxed resist it's easy to get stunned there, so strategy is sneaking up with backstab after using it on some random things, and one shot it with coup de grace during the immunity. Very assassin like right? So cool. Did you just say we can just broadside them from afar? LALALALA DON'T HEAR YOU
Preparation before going to hell :
---Farm nightmare nihlatack a little bit until level 104-105, to upgrade every tiered unique to tier (4), now he even give free signet of learning and some runes so he really is a good boi.
--- If you use the gear I recommended, you should end up with 125 Attack speed by this point (40 from nagi, 30 from gloves, 30 from helm, 10 from charm, 15 from queen of blades), by putting 3 sha runes -or jewels if you're rich- in an armor we can get the next breakpoint. Use all your money for mystic orb on weapon and boots, bonus from mystic orb are very important, and keeping them updated will definitly help a lot. Oil of Luck your gear (outside of rings) Make sure your hell resistances are fine (at least 70% in fire/cold/light), socket everything you have.
Now we're ready, let us go... to hell.

, I recommand farming Mephisto a little bit for at least making it tier (2), and have another attack speed item -gloves or helm uniques- this is not necessary but will make everything waaay easier, and give some xp. Should be done in a few two minutes run at worst. Tier (2)

Na-Krul's Spine
and an attack speed item, next one is
Na-Krul's Spine

Now we're ready, let us go... to hell.
