Introduction
This build is by far my favorite, and quite literally the basis of my liking to this game. I hope that in this guide I'll be able to properly share my fun, along with all the knowledge I've come to get from playing a build since a time the most info you could get asking about it was memes.
Strengths and weaknesses :
- Naginata is entierely viable Solo Self Found, with just a crafted weapon. Leveling to 140 while doing every quests except lvl 135 ones without stopping to farm for gear nor trading, just doing content as it unluck is something I often do, and show here. And it's fairly fast, even.
- Can get every charms, and have an overall very good boss killing capacity.
- Very good farming power in many places ; Viz jun and Fauzt most noticably, but every very dense zones are good.
- Trophy farming is very good thanks to Shunpo, Assassin's high movement speed and the above-named boss killing power.
- Has multiple defensive passives, noticably Perfect Being. This makes purify fights way easier than most other classes, if you're looking for easy Valthek or Laz, you're on the right place. It also make Nagi very suited for Hardcore.
- Very active gameplay with lots of fun
- Very active gameplay with lots of hand pain if you aren't strong enough. (use this opportunity to get stronger then !)
- Mediocre scosglen farmer. Or well it's decent, but you'll see better. Good part is that it's safe and fun, and don't require much. Running Scosglen ssf or just with the set works, it's just that you literally cannot scale enough to make it amazing. I myself like scosglen gaming a lot, but if you wanna roll over it effortlessly, I can't recommand.

Physical vs Elemental builds
Phy leveling (1 - 120) - Safer than ele due to leech and other defensives stats
Ele leveling (1 - 120) - More damage when farming, easier to get speed breakpoints
Here's the list of lvl 120+ builds varient I played and recommand :
Pure Physical - Decent at everything
Hybrid Physical / Poison - Better than the above when farming while still killing bosses fine and without losing leech
Pure Elemental (farming) - The fastest farmer, safe and strong
Pure Elemental (Bosses) - Stronger phy now but need a bit more set up to be so
If you want a sure and easy way to get everything right easily, I recommand the "Physical / Poison" build with the full
The Snake Pit
set the most. If you want to play Solo self found, you're pretty much locked into pure physical until you drop something. Elemental is both cheap and strong to farm and kill bosses ; buy a Zular Khan and that's it, you're ready to go zooming in fauzt. For doing bosses well as elemental you'll also need either The Snake Pit

I haven't played Black Ice yet, and as a non expert I don't wanna say too much, so currently there's no info about it here, sorry !
Skills
Basic Gameplay
Simply put, think of Broadside as your single target skill, Barrier Strike the medium aoe big damage skill, and Hades Gate the big aoe medium damage skill. In practice, Broadside is still useful when farming as it set up leech/life on kill from afar, and help stay safe. But most of the gameplay is Barrier strike with lots of shift clics, and running. As for Hades Gate, the more enemies there is on the screen, the more valuable it become. In ranged monsters heavy rifts such as Fauzt, Barrier is only used to spawn corpse, and Hades is the main clearning tool. In melee heavy rifts such as Duncraig, or when monsters are too tanky for Hades to deal with such as Scoslgen, then you can pretty much focus on Barrier Strike.
Keep Shadow refuge pretty much always up, and bloodbath in moment you want regen/plan to spam Hades Gates.
For bosses, Broadside alone does most of the job but if you get bored you can spam Barrier Strike, of course.

Innate skill
Bloodbath
Buff that need a melee swing to proc, give life on kill bonus for 10 seconds (only...). You don't have to be as autistic as me and keep it up most of the time, but it's a very cool buff that give lots of regen and is not to be underestimated from early game to late. Just don't let this autism follow you against bosses, where this is mostly useless.
Throwing knife Tree
Broadside
Basically our strongest and most impressive skill. Launch a barrage of knifes at 90% weapon damage. It's safe, doesn't have that long of a cd (7 seconds when maxed, 6 after specialization) and will DESTROY both bosses and packs. This skill is so strong you can do lots of content with only this ; Just watch it go brrrr and wait for it's cd to come again, and repeat. Well... It's not optimal to just wait so let's use other things too.
Trivia : The skill always has the same attack rate of 1 knife per frame (if my science is exact) so about 25 knifes per second. Meaning that with more levels, Broadside duration simply increase. By endgame broadside duration is about the same as it's cd.

Naginata Tree
Crucify
It's the only attack to use for lone stationnary target, so it's nice to use when Broadside is on cd and there's nothing else to do. But overall remember that others skill are stronger, though it's nice to use in normal and nightmare, afterward it slow down while Barrier Strike stay strong.

Laserblade
Passive that give bonus %total character defense and magic damage on weapon depending on base dexterity. By far the best passive we have.

Barrier Strike
Main spam attack of Naginata, the backbone of the build.
Actually the skill that made me want to start Naginata when I got back to the game, I loved Barrier since old median. It's another melee attack, that surround your opponent in shurikens dealing 100% weapon damage. In practice it is a very good clearing skill, dealing some nice damage to enemies moving in or out. As logic follows, it is useful especially against enemies rushing in or trying to escape too much, and dense places in general, but literally useless if you're doing a 1v1 against something that doesn't move, obviously.
If you want to attack a specific enemy, focus on another that is close. It actually is kinda tricky to optimise.

Backstab
Naginata soul, important enough to made me put it in my left clic. At level 1, the skill count as a big attack (200% weapon damage) that give 100% avoid for 0.1 second, i.e 3 frames.
The cooldown and cloak duration increase with hard points (points invested in the skill without taking account of +skills). We want to increase it to have more control of the invulnerability, and to take profit of the absurd magic damage bonus it give to broadside. How much is a matter of preference, too low is uncomfortable to play and too high not worth the points investement. I personally like putting 6, just enough to make the cd duration around the same as maxed broadside, so they can be toegether and live happily, while having a long enough immunity to use the skill defensively very well. So if you have « broadside cooldown reduction » affix from your weapon, putting less points is even better. Letting it at 1 point to spam it might seems interesting, it theorically give immunity the longest... But you can't always just stand still and swing all the time, for general gameplay I can't recommand it. And hitting with others things should be better.

Trivia : In game tip of backstab say it give "immunity" during cloacking time, but is in practice 100% avoid. This is slightly different since "charges attacks"(the thing when enemies charge and do a crushing blow animation) bypass avoid entierly and will hit. Noticably some bats, snakes, and Fallen Hero are concerned. It's not really a problem and no rifts are concerned but it's cool to know.

You now get to decide if you want to use 16 points (6 in backstab and 10 here) to have the good old bonus magic damage to broadside, and of course we do for destroying bosses during leveling
To be more precise about it's mechanic, the bonus magic damage is applied in real time, think of it as if the bonus were for each knifes individually during the cloaking time, it is not a buff that will be applied to the whole broadside. So the optimal combo indeed is broadside > backstab. Backstab > broadside make you lose lots of frames. It's useful in very dangerous places though, as the immunity make sure you can cast Broadside safely, so you might want to do it, especially after an agressive blink.

Hades Gate
Targeting an enemy corpse with this skill will make you teleport to it(or at least close to, the max range of this depend on Domain), then does 110% weapon damage to the whole screen. With 5 points in Momentum, once buffed with bloodbath, Hades Gates cd become 0 and turn into the main "spam" skill you use when farming very dense places. The more there's on screen the better. As one of our only non melee attack, and the fact that you can move a lot make Hades Gates usually pretty safe, unless it decide to tp you not where you clicked but in the middle of the pack instead because the skill is dumb dumb if there's lots of corpses... But usually it's safe, and strong enough with 1 point.

Fire way, you either forget it entierely or want to max him toegether with Hades Gate, his new bestie. Toegether they add a fairly good amount of fire damage, reliable even without lots of pierce.

Ninja Tree
Blink
Low cd teleport skill. As a bonus it stuns ennemies in a little zone around you. Putting 6 points make 3 second cd, but 2 points for 4 seconds is enough to be kinda comfortable
2 or 6 points → 1 when you get teleport from Void charm, it's a 3 sec cooldown tp given freely
Associated passive : Domain Now we have to pay for telporting lenght...
1 points is enough to pass through most walls and to not feel bad so I recommand that. 2 is the old distance and is mendatory to pass big walls such as lower kurast to Kurast or Tran Athulua skips, for exemple. 2 Feels better to me but 1 is good enough, really. Note that thoses walls can be passed with Jitan's Gate either way so you don't need Domain at all in fact haha. No idea if 3 points unlock new possibilities.
Don"t get baited by the Hades Gate range, it isn't important
Shadow Refuge
Buff that work the same way as bloodbath and gives %physical resistance and movement speed.

--> Associated passive : Shadowrush. Do you want to use up to 6 point for 15% movement speed each?
Answer is yes. Getting at least 3 points as fast as you can is enough to feel good, and then it's your choice, movement speed have decreasing returns so it's less important, but I tend to max it to 6.

Perfect being
Give passivly high avoid chance, mendatory skill that give Assassin a chance to live. If you are lucky. Anyway it's either 41% avoid at 1 point or 65 when maxed, the difference is huge defensively.
Max, leftovers for offensive farming specs
Queen of blades
Seemingly useful buff that launch autmatically shurinken to enemies, it does weapon damage and proc "on striking" bonus you might have. It's cool but not worth investing into. Keep it activated as it give free 15% attack speed

--> Associated passive : Shred
Shred change queen of blade to make it a 10 sec buff with 30 sec cd, with the addition now of +30% crushing blow given to all your attacks. As the name imply, it will shred tanky monster like there's no tomorrow. The weaker you are, the more you'll see this effect against tanky dudes like thoses fancy new elites. Do not think it's life changing and have to be up everytime it can, just put one sometime when you know it'll make a difference. Also have a bare minimum of cast speed, at least 20, or else it feel terrible and not worth the use.
Also before taking this point make sure that losing 15% attack speed from the base buff will not make you lose a breakpoint. You might consider not upgrading queen of blade at all if you don't want to bother with some 30 sec cd buff, and just want some speed, I still recommand using it but it's not a problem to forget it either.

Reward Tree
Prismatic Cloak
Another survival passive, reduce every incoming magic/elemental damage and give a little bit of max % life. Very cool
The science of how useful this skill is is hard to estimate because of how flat damage reduction work in practice, but it's a good places for leftovers points. Probably.
Leftovers
Doom / Beacon : Doom help a bit for boss killing but takes 15 whole points and is mostly useless outside of them. But of course, for some specific bosses, most primary exemple is Samael, maxing Doom is important. I also like to use it in Scosglen a lot. But overall, mind that taking it sacrifice points that would otherwise go to Prismatic Cloak, only to have some baby additional damage only against bosses.

[skill]Beacon[skill] Beacon : 20% movement speed one pointer. If you don't wanna invest in doom, I guess it's better than nothing.

Vampiric icon
Pretty underestimated skill, it's a spell you can use from afar, and putting it in the middle of an enemy pack will most of the time instantly regen all you life. It's kinda tricky and the regen depend on how much the enemies "allow" life leech, so it's not useful against bosses, and in rifts it's almost always better to just attack... but still useful, I swear

Some more Physical res ? Yes please. With some gear physical res is very quickly maxed on Assassin because of Shadow Refuge, but before that it's always welcomed.

Purity
2.0 feature way more curses and poison than before. In a world antidotes disappeared, poison lenght reduction is an important stat. As reducing thoses damn -1000% all speed curses time is.

Specialization
What do we do once we have points to spare and that Tenacity is not useful anymore due to Shadow Refuge maxing our physical res alone? That's right we throw points here instead, only to increase Broadside to 30
10 in lategame
Melee Devotion
Does not work with Broadside ! Only take it in a situation you do not need Broadside. Using a spec dedicated to farming Fauzt or Viz jun is the only good reason to me.
Other noticable skills :
-Anathema (claw tree) : Melee devotion locking broadside is a special interaction, others "only allow melee" stuff will actually allow it. So when going for an ele Nagi build, noticably black Ice, Anathema is good to use.
-Batstrike (claw tree) : You can theorically play with a claw on swap, summon bats and play Nagi normally. It isn't bad, they can decently tank, but it's not needed in my opinion.
-Psionic scream is decently strong and potentially useful, but well it doesn't suit Nagi that much. But it's fun to play around especially to troll ranged enemies.
-Psionic storm with it's passive give insane regen on cast, it's an amazing skill for getting regen against bosses. I personnaly use it for Sescheron and Samael, good stuff.
-Incarcination Trap : Useful to clear Lazarus totems
-Forger's Hegemony (trap tree): The regen works, but require enormous amount of points, it's not worth.
-Whichwind (throw tree) : It's possible as well, to use a throwing knife on swap, launch a few whichwind, and swap back to a Nagi. The damage will then be calculated in real time, and Whichwind big damage with a big Nagi hurt as hell. It's a funny trick that is useful in some situations. Not recommanded or needed though.

Interesting as a movement skill, make you pounce at ennemies without cd. It's used to rush though zones and farm trophies, mostly. Having a shunpo nagi at hand is useful, but I don't recommand having it on your main weapon, it's a waste of affixes.
Well actually farming with shunpo can work. It's kinda lacking alone as it have less than half the damage of hades gates and a smaller area, but well it just feel satisfying to some people you know.
Bloodlust From crafted Claw
Give +weapon damage for 1--2+ min buff depending on your +skills level, not insane but it can be putted on the swap weapon claw without any investement, it's a cool free little bonus.

Originally we only want The Endless Loop for it's stats and easy availability, and get this skill in the process. An attack that release weapon damage charged bolt behind it, very simple. It's a cool skill, that cover the "stationnary solo target attack to spam" role, that crucify don't cover well by being bad. It also is useful as a small area -or at least a spread we can control- damage for single target uses. Making it one of the only viable option for Killing Astorgha.
Whirlpool From crafted Helm (Circlets included) and Body Armors.
Whirlpool is better than crucify and, same as Charged Strike, can help for stationnary target that Barrier Strike can't cover well. It also is easy to get in crafted circlet, leech a lot and is nice to use. However, as much as I used it before, that's the theory and in practice Barrier do well enough for me. I still recommand it in Bremmtown, but otherwise not anymore. Do try it to see if you like the feeling though.

Totally outclass both Whirlpool and charged stikes as a single target dps. It simply is the best. But it's available very late, and come with a mana cost as amazing as the skill is. It help a LOT in Lab and scosglen.

My old favorite set up there, can do all content nicely, fun to play, construct itself naturally while leveling, no problems only gaming.
Notes :
- Skills to max, in order : Shadowrush → Laserblade → Broadside → Momentum → Perfect being → Backstab → Execution. Once everything has taken shape, your remaning points will all go in defensives passives ; In order : Purity, Tenacity, Endurance, Prismatic cloak. Doom is better to use than beacon, but it start to shine after putting points into, while beacon is an ok 1 pointer to use purely for the movement speed. Therefore, either decide to max it fast or take beacon and focus on defensive passives for now. Shred and Vampiric icon are optional, they're nice to use but if you see you never use them,; then forget it.
- Cast speed is used to cast Bloodbath, Shadow refuge, Doom, Vampiric Icon, queen of blades and Disco Inferno. You'll not use all of theses, but getting the bare minimum of cast speed at least for buffs is important.
Don't forget that it's also useful for purify fights, for some of them you might want to swap to a defensive nagi with cast speed and life, or a claw + shield even for better speed, but you lose the beauty of being a Nagi so it's up to your preferences

Tiered unique aquisition order go this way :
The key point behind thoses items is to get quickly some attack speed and life steal, it's the two most important stats early on with resistances. All so without investing in strength.
Generally speaking, for items that require strength, T2 items can be used with the help of an honorific (That I chose to be a belt). They will hold up until level 110, where attributes charms will make upgrading to T3 easy, while T4 come at 120.

The key point behind thoses items is to get quickly some attack speed and life steal, it's the two most important stats early on with resistances. All so without investing in strength.
Generally speaking, for items that require strength, T2 items can be used with the help of an honorific (That I chose to be a belt). They will hold up until level 110, where attributes charms will make upgrading to T3 easy, while T4 come at 120.
Note :
The Snake Pit
is an amazing set. It is not an important part of the progression ; I always played without it just fine. But what it offer in term of damage for it's low str, level requirement, and ease to use (Halberd require lower attack speed breackpoints, for exemple), is indecent. The pieces alone aren't worth usually, though using belt + helm can work if you have nothing else. But the full set is nice and can carry from level 120 to 140+ easily, and work both as full physical or with way of the spider.The Snake Pit

Strength beyond offer a slightly better damage output and more life leech, but overall Rebel still hold up forever, and have some useful stats (str, resists etc). Do not underestimate a craft, the flat life is amazing and with enough %dex it come close to rebel damage.
Eternal is the best to use for Scosglen due to Disco Inferno.
Gloves
Many are good to use if randomely found but ultimately you want Savage
Belt
Both are good. Black Void is of course better in any place life leech work but don't underestimate good old Endless Loop.

Strength beyond offer a slightly better damage output and more life leech, but overall Rebel still hold up forever, and have some useful stats (str, resists etc). Do not underestimate a craft, the flat life is amazing and with enough %dex it come close to rebel damage.

Notes :
- This is a level 109 tree, as you see perfect being isn't maxed yet, this is the next thing to do. I prioritise damage over tankyness here, but you technically can remove a way to get it earlier if you're scared.
- I start this build at level 105 so I'm not sure what's the best skill order earlier, it's probably best to max phoenix or gryphon way first, then spider, then broadside, then raven.

Zular Khan tempest bossing :
Very straightforward to use because it simply scale with ways, simply stack pierce and look happily over the low cd broadside Zular Khan give. The build do not rely on dex to get damage, so it can stack vit, making it very much hardcore viable. Also imply that stacking enough attack rating is important. One very detailled showcase by Willan show this build against Samael, as he also pushed it to level 140 in hardcore in 2.1, we can definitely say this is a very good option, done by a very good player. Wp for the find !
I myself never played hardcore enough to tell enough, but both this version and the above seems very safe to me.
This here is a lvl 145 offensive version, removing execution for endurence life for a more defensive one can be considered. With this one the idea is to spam lvl 1 backstab during broadside effect.
Zular Khan's Tempest farming : Zular Khan's Tempest is a very strong and satisfying to use weapon.
Remove Broadisde and specialization to add Melee Devotion, put points in every elemental ways (or 3 for more defensive passives with only 1 point in phoenix if you really want to be safe), and take delight in seeing everything melting before the mighty Hades Gates. It''s possible to add gear with flat physical damage to leech more as well, making this build a true rainbow. I did it a lot in the past, but now because of the introduction of way of the raven I prefer to go full ele.

Early gameplay and Milestones (non updated for 2.3)

---Start out buying basic gray and magic gear that looks useful, and a wrist blade (Any magic or rare item with resist is good at this point). At lvl 7-8, it is finally enough to go back in town to gamble and equip the holy weapon, an Halberd. Aim for one with elemental damage of any kind, and pray that you can make
--- Take act 1 waypoints as you progress, they are useful to check for shrines, experience and stamina shrine especially are useful for going fast during leveling, and stamina duration is almost the same as it's respawn time.
Crucify should be decent enough in normal and nightmare, but do feel free to drop lots of barrier strikes to learn how to use it, as well as buffing with shadow refuge/bloodbath.
--- Act 2 feel a little bit stiff because of the lack of attack speed, until level 25 where Queen of Blades and possibly
--- Farming Mephisto a little bit to have is not necessary but will make everything easier, and give some xp. Nagi is very comfortable to play even rushing, but being ahead in xp help a lot in this game so do feel free to take your time if you want to.
--- Don't forget to buff yourself with queen of blade for it's 15% bonus attack speed.
--- Upon killing shenk in act 5, you can craft an honorific belt on a random base with low requirement like any T1 Sash , to put in order str, resists, hit recovery, vita and dex in it.
--- Nihlathak is the best to go for if you're in need for fast crystals, he always give 2 uniques and running him is slightly faster than Mephisto, and give more xp. Doing him once or twice assure being overleveled, which is always nice.
--- After killing baal's last wave, it will spawn a portal to Tran Athulua, the first challenge. You have to kill the 3 priestress to get a very nice charm. Domain need to be at least level 2 to do the skips, but it's a nice zone with lots of unique drop so might as well take it slowly
--- Don't forget to do every quest that give bonuses : +skill from den, radament and Izual, others things from charsi's quest, Lam esen tome, jade thing and Anya resist scroll.
Other interesting quest are Countess, Hellforge and act 5 barb save as they all give sweet runes, sometime even a jackpot great rune from the hellforge. Notice that barb saving is useful on nightmare and hell only, especially hell to get a zod and Jah, very very nice.
--- Focus on upgrading the weapon first, then attack speed items, then the rest
--- Check skill leveling order in skill tldr if you have a doubt
Preparation before going to hell :
--- Getting the last attack speed Breakopint is harder now in 2.1, aim for 89 for now in late nightmare/early hell. From my experience, I even need 1 or 2 attack speed mystic orb to get it faster. Oil of Luck your gear (outside of rings), use all your money for mystic orb on weapon and belt. Bonus from mystic orb are very important, and keeping them updated always change a lot. Make sure your hell resistances are fine, socket everything you have.
