Frostclaw got a huge buff and is probably now better than Fireheart, for at least early and midgame. Also provides huge bossing capability over Fireheart, due to big hits less often.
Totems finally got some resistances, which is a huge deal for their tankiness
Totems now cost more mana, which makes dying and creating a new game somewhat a pain, even with the mana regen from Embalming. I strongly suggest you teleport often as to not make them despawn, even in towns

PREFACE


This guide expects you to have some experience playing the game, especially summoners. If you run into any problems, please ask in Median XL Discord #general or #newbie-help, as you’ll likely get the answer faster than posting here.

The guide is still work in progress and some of the build variants (especially lategame v3) are being iterated on. If you have any good suggestions or this guide is missing something you’d like to see, please post in the thread or contact fronk (fuppy#0001) on Discord.

Totem necro is a great build to season start with, because it doesn’t require that much in terms of gear until lategame (but then again, what build doesn’t). Totem necromancer is pseudotanky with life after kill from Soulbond and little bit of defense from Death Ward. Totems and Jinn drawing aggro from monster also helps a great deal and should be used to your advantage if you’re struggling to stay alive otherwise. Still, we are somewhat a hybrid between a summoner and a caster, so temper your expectations around that. One of the strongest summoners right now (as of patch 1.7).

Since patch 1.7 Frostclaw should now be our main totem early on and the two other be just 1 pointers. Totemnec can do all content up to 120 with just tiered uniques, some clever teleporting and totem placement. Most 125+ content is doable with proper gear and when you obtain enough of the charms and possibly their trophies.

Our gear mainly takes a lot of strength and dexterity, so those should be prioritised somewhat heavily, until we start getting a ton of attributes from uber charms.

TU Priority: boots, helmet, weapon, shield, belt, chest. If you get decent pieces on any of these slots before the TU, change the priority as you wish. Can’t really go wrong in any case.

You won’t get all this gear at the points I mentioned, fill them in as you get them. The reason sockets are fire damage and MOs are cold is that mystic orbs are more permanent than sockets and generally come in later. My strategy was to boost all totems a little bit.

SPECIFICS


Soulbond


This passive is totem specific, not a generic buff on you. Meaning you always want to keep the totems fairly close to each other. The radius is a little bit smaller than the shockwave from Stormeye totem.

Frostclaw Totem


To farm with this, I strongly suggest you place 1-2 Frostclaw away from the pile of totems, so they don’t all target the same enemy, wasting a lot of potential damage. General strategy I run with is to use Bend the Shadows a lot and place 1-2 Frostclaw between the enemy and myself, as my mana allows it.

Target acquisition range is roughly the same range as Stormeye Totem’s shockwave.

These gloves are huge for us, since the Firedance buff can double dip with our totems.

UBERS
If not mentioned here, just let totems/Jinn tank and kill the uber while avoiding damage by using Bend the Shadows often. Frostclaw is the default totem for all ubers, unless otherwise mentioned.

Death Projector: Place totems around the fella, so they eat the spirling lightning and not you

Prince Bull Rodeo: Place all totems on BPR, prioritising Frostclaw but making sure Soulbond is up for them

The Veiled Prophet: Make sure you have all totems, spam Jinn to tank the acolytes and put Frostclaw on the enemy totem

Judgement Day: This is far easier with Frostclaw than any other build. Aim to walk out of this uber with 2 upgraded charms

Twin Seas: Keep totems in one place and run away from the boss to pull her back in if she teleports too far from the totems

Quov Tsin: This is a bit of a doozy. I just went in and out of Quov’s range with all totems up, effectively bombing him with Frostclaw hits

Kingdom of Shadow: As hard for us as most others. Don’t Bend the Shadows unless enemies are far enough from you

Eve of Destruction: Surprisingly easy, just Bend the Shadows the totems out of Baal’s melee range whenever he gets close. You might get occasional boss spawn, but Frostclaw should make fairly short work of them and the minions.

Banisher of Light: Same strategy as Twin Seas. Bend the Shadows to dodge punishers and keep totems damaging Kabraxis.

Lord of Lies: Find the rat and Bend the Shadows on him whenever he gets out of totem range.

Xazax: Fairly hard for us, since totems will target Penitents and their bash (and Xazax’ spells) are pretty good whenever totems are piled on top of each other. My strategy to was to try and keep all Frostclaws on Xazax with 1 Fireheart/Stormeye to activate Soulbond, while keeping other totems on Peninents, so they don’t run after you.

Astrogha: Keeping Soulbond up on this fight is far too hard, as they might easily kill Astro’s totems and heal him. I just divebombed him with myself & Frostclaw over and over until he died. Might take a while.

Very Nice guide !!! I started as a totem necro too, this character is my favourite. I'm in mid-game for a while with the set. I farming singnets and find better gear, but this is a very good character, and fun to play.

I had the idea of making gameplay vids a bit too late, was far too geared at that point. I'll probably make some as I progress thru the ubers in the next season.

Does totems inherit only "- enemy elemental resists" or i can use "- enemy cold resist" too and just make a cold themed totemmancer ignoring fire and lightning?

Thats the idea behind using Celestial Crown and stacking cold SD in the guide. Stacking Cold SD, -enemy cold res, and SF early gives an insane boost to Frostclaw totem. Additionally, that will be the first totem (at least up to ~120 ish) that you will have 3 of.

Also.... the tooltip for Totemic Mastery explains what the totems inherit from you.

Totems increase in damage from +element% damage and +spell% damage on items? The last time I played a totemancer, I believe totems only received those bonuses if they were from skills, thus you would max Dragonfire Oil and go with Fireheart.
