Greetings! I am here today to present you with an exciting starter build for MXL 2.0. Of all the builds I played throughout Beta Testing, Lightning Sorc is the one I consider the most versatile. The

set provides considerable power during midgame and carries well into late game. There are also drastic skill changes which is enough to warrant a new perspective on how to navigate the new dynamic. With 2.0 bringing loads of fresh players, I have opted to write a guide based on the Solo Self-Found (SSF) principle popularized by Wulf. The following guide will assume you have no outside help in any way and that you do not trade with other players. These condition will impose a unique set of restrictions such as minimizing respeccing as much as possible, making do with less than perfect gear set up for the sake of time, and doing certain uber content at later levels rather than the instant they become available to you.



Why play Lite Sorc?
  • Unlimited Power.
  • Powerful mid-ranged cone of death.
  • Alternative auto-aim main skill available.
  • Long-range single target annihilator that heals you with each cast.
  • Cheap, easy to obtain early and midgame gear. Craft orbs from rich pool of stats.
  • Able to do a wide range of end-game uber content with some tweaking and no outside help.
  • Fast start-up farmer with little investment if your aim is to make lots of tg in the market place while minimizing initial costs.


Hybrid Guide?
This guide is written from a SSF perspective but not everyone elects to go down that path. Many of the gearing choices during progression were far from best in slot, it was simply what I found up to that point. I will occasionally provide commentary on what I used versus what the ideal gearing would have been in that situation.


New in 2.0
  • Symbol of Esu (moon cookies) are gone now. No more instant healing, resulting in a large survivability gap. New thematic Coven skills, each buffing different aspects of survivability, have stepped up to fill the vacuum.
  • Normal/Superior items: You can no longer unsocket normal/superior white items. This means failed runewords will ruin the base like in clod. Other qualities can still be unsocketed. Also, oil of renewal can only be used on items that are NOT Superior. Oil of Luck cannot be used on Normal/Superior/Honorific items, instead this process is built-in. The moment you roll an item into Superior, for armors it will either roll UP TO 60% ed or UP TO 50 ed and 1 pr. This means you are no longer able, or rather no longer have to keep rerolling for 20ed and 1 physical res, which is a good quality of life improvement overall.
  • Runes can no longer be downgraded. Plan your runewords ahead of time and start looking for runes. You can create rune containers by cubing a long rune with oil of craft.
  • Melee locks work differently now. While under the effects of any melee lock restriction, you can no longer summon, except for edyrems inside Toraja as that is a quest skill. This is easily overlooked. For our purposes it is only slightly relevant here because each class has the option of picking Melee Devotion(20% overall damage reduction + Melee Lock effect), which will become an optional skill to take later during any Purify Ubers.
  • New Special Oils
    Oil of Greater Luck - 40% lucky, double the success rate of the common version sold by vendors

  • Oil of Augmentation - Converts magic item to rare. Basically a Charsi imbue.
    Act 2 Side Areas:
    • Stony Tomb/Treasure Vault (Rocky Wastes)
    • Halls of the Dead 1-3 (Dry Hills)
    • Ancient Tunnels (Lost City)
  • Oil of Intensity - Shrine craft/bless stats roll in the top half of the range
    Example: Normal bless rolls [1-100] --> Intense Bless rolls [51-100]
    *This recipe requires a full shrine with 10 charges and will consume the whole shrine.
    Act 3 Side Areas:
    • Spider Caverns (Spider Forest)
    • Swampy Pit 1&2, Flayer Dungeon 1-3 (Flayer Jungle)
    • The 6 Temples (Kurast Bazaar, Upper Kurast, Kurast Causeway)

  • % life has been nerfed by ~70% across all values, usually rounded up except for Laz Trophy Sleep bonus where it is rounded down. Example: 10% max life -> 3%, 15% -> 5%. Lotto bonus on armor is now 2%, down from 5%.

  • Dimensional Labyrinth - First 5 tiers were removed, next 10 tiers renamed 1-10 and bumped up by 5 alvl. So think of each level as being 10 levels harder than in 1.8. This means it is now possible to level to 150 in labs without having to do it in a multiplayer game.

    Abbreviations: SSF - Solo Self Found, AC - Arcane Crystal, LP - Lightning pierce or -% to Enemy Lightning Resistance, LSD - Lightning Spell Damage, SF - Spell Focus

    Terms:
    SHRINE CRAFTING - Cubing a shrine with a sacred rare or crafted item rerolls all the stats and generates 4 random ones + stats granted by the shrine.

    SHRINE BLESSING - Cubing a shrine with any Honorific/Crafted Sacred/Uncrafted Sacred Rare + 2 AC returns that item with its same stats PLUS the stat bonuses from the shrine. Different from SHRINE CRAFTING. If you forget to include the 2 AC you will perform a craft and not a bless. Note: sacred rare items that have never been used in a craft can also be blessed.

    TU MAKE - Cubing any Tiered items 1-4 with 2 AC creates the unique item for that item base in that tier.


    Skills

    Forked Lightning - main skill based on my preference. Everything else still applies if you choose to use Tempest.

    Thunderstone(incl. upgrade) - Single target
    Warp Armor - Big defense boost + avoid
    Nova Charge - Free passive damage
    Vengeful Power - Physical Resist + power boost when you get hit
    Hive - Free damage
    Raven Familiar - +skill levels, 15% bonus to energy
    Superposition - 0cd warp
    Symbol of Esu - Absorb %, spell focus
    Witchblood - big damage boost, big sustain
    Forceblast - Enemy speed and damage debuff

    Coven Skills: Element Themed Passives and Buffs
    These skills offer various buffs aimed to fill the gap left by cookie nerf. You may choose up to 2 passives trees. These are independent from what element you choose as your offensive skills.

    Fire
    • Living Flame - Flat maximum health and health regeneration.
    • Firedance - Creates a buff area where you deal more spell and physical damage.

    Lightning
    • Warp Armor - Big bonus to defense and 5% avoid + 1% for each 2 additional base points into this skill. (Max 17%)
    • Nova Charge - Periodically releases a wide nova that deals lightning damage. Also adds a % of dex to energy.

    Cold
    • Snow Queen - 1% maximum life per base level up to 13%. Also adds small amounts of flat defense.
    • Ice Elementals - Useful summons to tank while obtaining certain charms.

    Poison
    • Vengeful Power - 2% Physical Res per level up to 20%. Also increases your damage for 5 seconds after being struck.
    • Hive - Periodically deals large amounts of poison damage that scales generously.

Analysis
Fire: Strong for dungeons/bossing. Recommended for Scosglen.
Lightning: Strong for general farming and early leveling. Recommended for Fauztinville.
Cold: Strong for early leveling, bossing, labs.
Poison: Strong for speedfarming. In Fauztinville, Vengeful power is best due to all attacks being wdm so this buff is almost always active. In Scosglen, all attacks are elemental so VP is useless.

I make use of all these depending on the circumstance. In early game it almost doesn't matter. If you're having trouble surviving, swap to cold for Ice Elementals. If survivability is ok, poison tree lets you play more aggressively.

Superposition: 0cd warp that has a high mana cost, renders potions nearly useless for 5 seconds after casting, cannot be used in town. There are circumstances where this skill is useful and where it is not.

Stat Points
1-105 - Enough to wear gear + the rest in energy. I recommend using t2/t3 armor with reqs being no higher than ~200 str or dex.
105-125 - Use the bonus stats from charms to wear better gear without putting any base stat points into anything other than energy
125+ Aim for 1900 energy without Raven, the rest for gear or vit.

Signets of Learning: Each signet you consume will grant 1 stat point similar to the 5 you get each time you level up, capping at 400. Signets are especially useful for equipping sacred items as well as extra damage early on. In addition to dropping as monster loot they can be created by cubing any sacred unique or set item with Catalyst of Learning dropped by NM Summoner. They also drop 2 at a time from Hell Nihlathak. Some people like to stop and farm their 400 sigs as early as they can, but I am not one of those people because they can be acquired albeit slower just from normal play.

Should probably wait until you can farm Sunless Sea to do this because orbing is expensive in early game and you will be upgrading gear often.


Socket Fillers
Early game - Gems to fill in whatever resistances you are missing. Note: Shield slots require classic gems, Body armor slots require mxl gems to stack resistance.
Mid game, Perfect Topaz, Pul, rare jewels with SF, LSD
Endgame - Crafted jewels with Spell Focus + Lightning Spell + flat life + 2% Energy or 1% All Attributes, Lightning Pierce runes


Energy Scaling and Spell Focus
The new formula for spell damage, (130(ENERGY+20))/(500+ENERGY), slows down greatly at 2100. If you have 1900 unbuffed, you'll have around 2100 with Raven Familiar on. Any more energy past this gives you less than 1% more damage per 100 energy so it's really just for extra mana.

Spell Focus now scales independently of Energy in a simplified 10 SF = 1% more damage, capping at 1000 SF for 100% more damage.
So overall, if you have 1000 SF and 1900 Energy you will deal (100 + 104) = 204% more damage, with 1000 SF and 2100 Energy you deal (100 + 106) + 206% more damage, and at 1000SF + 3000 Energy you deal (100 + 112.2) = 212.2% more damage.

Honorifics: Items with no stats of their own but receive double bonus from Mystic Orbs and Unique Mystic Orbs
How to create honoric: Cube any Magic Item (Blue) with Mark of Infusion dropped by Shenk the Overseer on any difficulty. Item will have max sockets available for its current tier. Due to the cost of mystic orbs early on, this method may be prohibitive before 105, when you are able to farm Sunless Sea for gold.

. It is available 18 levels earlier and starts out with comparable bonuses to spell damage at the cost of half your maximum life pool over 30 seconds. However, the bonuses scale better with soft levels so with enough +x to all skills stats, it will eventually provide 2.5x to 3x the bonus that shamanka's bloodlust does.

Extra junk shrines: Eagle Stance, Light Pierce. Eagle stance is a buff native to the Barbarian tree that provides 40% mana regen and approx 2.2% life regen per second at lv 1. This will become invaluable to deal with early mana costs and Blood Fury health costs. This stat is incredibly hard to come by, around 1 occurrence per 10 shrines (100 charges) used so it is advisable not to chase this with valuable Ornate and Eerie Shrines. Instead use junk shrines until you get Eagle Stance + any roll of Lightning pierce, then bless with Ornate. If you do not get Eagle Stance + Lightning pierce + 1+ useful stat using junk shrines, that is alright.

In my opinion, if you are not farming for Enhanced Runes or arcane crystals, you should not run Scosglen. I.E. if you are skipping Trees and Etherborns, you should not run Scosglen.

Fun fact: Scosglen's full affects are not yet realized. Scosglen was not originally meant to be a place to farm regular loot. It was meant to be a place to farm endgame runeword bases using a special mf debuff aura from Spriggans(Negative MF makes magic items roll as superior) that was changed before release. Eventually this feature will return as more runewords and potential base overhaul will be added to justify this area's purpose.

Enhanced Rune Farming


Top 6 Enhanced Runes(28-33) are locked to Scosglen

0.58% chance to get a Gur(25) Vez(26) Ohn(27) from delta and epsilon. Others have "substantially less" chance.

Therefore it is not advised that you skip the Big Trees because the droprate for top 6 runes becomes abysmally low with trash mobs. If you aren't farming for top 6 you lose a lot of potential loot faming in this area vs speedfarming Fauzt.


Magic Find

Recommended MF: 200-300, more is ok, less is ok

Observe that Unique MF% does not scale linearly with MF%. From 0 to 100 mf, you are 71% more likely to find a unique item. At 200mf you are 111% more likely. At 300mf, only 136%. Therefore, the first 50-100mf is the most important. After that another 100 is ok. Past 200mf you compare clearing speed vs effective unique mf %. For example, you can consider completing a run faster equivalent to boosting your mf, using unique items divided by time as a metric. Let's say a 5 minute run nets 4 uniques at 200mf. This is equal to 48 uniques per hour. If you were to add 100mf (by using mystic orbs or swapping to mf gear)for a total of 300mf, you would end up with 53.6 uniques an hour. But if instead you use different mystic orb and gear to increase your power and turn your 5 minute run into a 4 minute run, you'd would end up with 60 uniques/hour. Of course, even with diminishing returns, more mf is certainly better than less. I recommend a comfortable range of 200-300mf because you can reach this without major sacrifices. I make this point because after 300mf, mf becomes harder and harder to get. Beyond this, getting more mf certainly means losing power in the form of opportunity cost. But I leave you to make up your mind on this area.

Actually more like an account of my SSF journey. Nearly all videos are done, just need uploading. Commentary, gearing, strategies to come.

I primarily use 2 builds when going for bosses: the regular maxed Fork farming spec and Maxed Thunderstone + Ice Elementals build. I try to minimize respec because belladonnas are a rare commodity early. So if an uber really requires Ice Elementals its generally a harder hitting uber anyway therefore I may not do it immediately. Instead I'll come back later when I eventually do respec, and attempt all the bosses where this build makes the fight infinitely easier.

Some of the harder bosses like Judgement Day (120) and Zagraal's Shadow (120), you may need to come back later as I did. Generally, being 5 levels above the uber makes the fight much much easier. For Kingdom of Shadow (120) you may need to wait until 130 or later.

For this fight you need to avoid getting hit by the top-down lightning bolts that appear inside the lightning circle after a day because it will fail the bonus quest even if it doesn't kill you. You also need to watch his head for a fire symbol. That means he will summon a Frozen Shambler with a freezing aura to attack you. In addition, while the fire icon is actively pulsing he will deal fire damage to you directly unless you are standing inside the ice circle, which negates that damage. You get 2 rewards, the drop for killing him which adds +1 to all skills and the bonus quest if you are successful you must immediately cube the Riftwalker's Eye you got from Lesser Riftwalker, by itself to add an additional 2% life and mana.

Summons help but you need at least a merc to do this comfortably. Bartuc and his golems only take damage after their Wychwind attack hits a target. If you avoid or block the attack, it does not count and their shields will not be lowered. If you have high defense, it will also cause the attack to not land, which is why you need minions to take the hit. Remember to keep moving because each golem will plant an ied at your feet when they die that will explode for fire damage.

Position yourself in direct line of sight of him with no pillars in between. When he casts his totem around you, do not attack them or the darklings that spawn around you. The totems will disappear on their own after a while. Sometimes if there are totems near him you must wait for them to despawn so you don't hit them. You need some modest defense to be able to stand there and take some hits but you should be able to get a few thunderstones off before you have to teleport away. It will be harder to navigate when near him because his aura slows you by -30 velocity. When the number of darklings get out of control, kites some out of his line of sight and kill them with forked, taking care not to hit totems. If you kill a totem, he will heal a little bit and you get cursed for 100% attack speed,-100 velocity, and something like negative 50000 magic and physical damage reduction, enabling the next attack to kill you instantly. Therefore it is best to turn off sources of passive damage such as Nova Charge, Hive, summons, reanimate %. When you kill darklings, there is a chance it will cast Deathstrike at the location you were standing so you must keep moving as you are clearing them.

This is where the Enchanted shrines you kept come in handy. Hopefully at lv 125 you have a decent cluster of arcane crystals. You should craft items with 2% magic res and other useful stats such as vit and flat life. Then bless it for another 1-2%. Your aim is 25%-30% magic res and 10k+ life. Then equip your eagle stance orb. You only need to kill a few enemies on the way to the boss so its best to let your merc handle this part and go full tank. This is one of the few situations you put a point into Melee Devotion since you can still purify with it active.

Strategy: Get enough Max lightning resistance until you can comfortably tank lightning spiral. Watch his head Because he will telegraph his moves. Fire icon means he will spawn a Frozen Shambler and a Circle of Ice on the field. He will then pulse fire damage throughout the arena unless you stand in the Safe Spot. The Safe Spot is meant to be the blue circle but in reality it's wherever the Shambler spawns. If he doesn't spawn inside the circle, you must ignore the circle and go to him. Ice icon means he will cast a hundred retaliate novas that you cannot ethically survive. To avoid this you must jump on top of him and stand close, nut-to-butt.

To fulfill the bonus quest you must not get hit by the delayed lightning bolt that spawns inside lightning circles. Stepping into them is fine as long as you are not inside it when the lightning bolt comes down. You must lower his health down to a sliver, then wait for 1 shambler to be on the field before you kill Riftwanker. If you are successful you will receive an upgrade when you cube Riftwanker's Eye by itself. Other rewards: Cube reagent for 1 more max res, Depleted Riftstone (1).

Maybe it's on the way but I feel like this guide kinda lacks some kind of analysis or pros/cons of the actual build. Other than that I find the formatting and everything else in the guide very nicely written.

How do you get lightning pen for the endgame though? Pen runes are Teganze-only now, which can be a bit too annoying to farm without proper gear compared to Duncraig. You might wanna go through the runewords section and add good ones to the mid-game list.
