HOW TO: LINUX INSTALLATION MedianXL

Since i had kind of a hard time installing the MOD i give a quick guide of what did the job for me.

Make sure you have the latest proprietary graphics drivers andwine staging from https://www.winehq.org/ installed
First you need to install Diablo II and Lord of Destruction

Installation with CD:
Put CD1 [INSTALL] in drive
Navigate to your CD drive and execute setup.exe with wine by right clicking it
Choose Install Diablo II, then choose the 3rd option Full Install
Accept the EULA, type in a Name and your 16 character CD-KEY and click OK
Select "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II" as installation directory, uncheck "Create shortcut on desktop" and click OK
Follow the installation process like with windows
When done do the same with the LOD CD
Dont forget to upgrade to full install
You now have a playable version of D2+LOD located at "/home/["your username"]/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Diablo II"
To upgrade to 1.14d start diablo II.exe with wine and log in to battle.net

Installation with downloader from blizzard.com:
Go to https://www.blizzard.com and login to your account, on your account settings page you want to find Diablo II and "download client"
Change language for D2 and LOD to english and click download for Windows
Execute the diablo2 downloader file with wine
Select "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II" as installation directory
When the download is complete click install Diablo II, agree with the EULA and type in a Name and your 26 character CD-KEY from your account settings page and click OK
Choose "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\" as install directory, uncheck "Create shortcut on desktop" and click OK
Click Back and Exit Installer
Do same process with LOD downloader
You now have a playable version of D2+LOD located at "/home/["your username"]/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Diablo II"
To upgrade to 1.14d start diablo II.exe with wine and log in to battle.net

Now you want to download the MOD installer from https://get.median-xl.com which comes as a ".AppImage" file
Right click your downloaded file, click properties, go to the acces rights tab and check "allow file to be executed as program" and close
You can also do this through the terminal using

$ chmod a+x Subsurface*.AppImage

Doubleclick the downloaded file and click yes
After a while the MOD Launcher comes up and asks for your diablo II directory
Navigate to "/home/["your username"]/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Diablo II" and click OK
In the upper right corner you find the settings
Select Direct3D as Video Mode and make sure the installation folder matches your Diablo II directory
Close the settings and click Install

If you get an Error in the upper red line, click on it, open launcher/error_log.txt
If you read this lines:

DOWNLOAD FILE FAILED: Error: Error: Address http://s3.amazonaws.com/medianxllauncher/MPQ_PATCH.7z is not reachable.
Error: Error: Address http://s3.amazonaws.com/medianxllauncher/MPQ_PATCH.7z is not reachable.

the MOD Launcher is still out of date and you have to download and copy 2 files manually

Download files from
https://get.median-xl.com/launcher/index.php?get=mod
https://get.median-xl.com/launcher/index.php?get=dlls
and extract the files to your diablo II directory.

You shall now be ready to rumble.

I did exactly everything you instruct. I managed to get the game running up to the main menu, but when I tried to create a new char, a "generic bad character file" error occurred.

First off, thank you Tom1986 for the guide it helped me get closer to playing this on Ubuntu. I followed this guide and in the end the launcher is throwing me the file download error. I tried downloading the updated files manually as stated and extracting them in my Diablo II folder but the launcher continues to ask me to install and continues to fail with the same file download error. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Any ideas? I'm using Ubuntu 18.10 with the latest video drivers.

From what I ascertained from Tom1986's suggestion, and from my experience after following the latter, you would have to have the launcher running, but open the game from the original D2 executable, provided that the two files are within the D2 directory.

fix for "generic bad character data ..." error, copy MedianXL folder from /home/user/MedianXL/ to /home/user/.wine/drive_c/users/user/Application Data/MedianXL/

What do I do about this error? The game won't even launch.

Wine staging 4.12
Installed Diablo via battle.net and updated to 1.14d before installing median XL mod.
I've also tried do a fresh install of Diablo 1.13c as well.

Anyone ever find a solution to the c0000005 problem posted above?

Ftr, I asked in the Discord Tech Support channel about 2 hrs after launch. Still waiting to hear back.

Edit 2:
Tried a few things on my own that seemed to get the game running:
> Switched from WINE 4.12.1 Staging to 4.0.1 Stable.
> Clean install of D2 in a new WINE prefix.
> Used Launcher version 1.1.9.
> Switched from the proprietary NVIDIA driver to the Nouveau driver (not sure if relevant, will retry the NVIDIA driver later).

Don't use Wine 4.12.1.
Median XL will silently fail to launch with 4.12.1.
