PREFACESince the latest buffs in patch 1.4 and 1.5, Caster Sorc has seen a rise in playability, and it’s now really suited as a first-to go character for new players. She has a really simple playstyle and minimal skill switching, so if you're into piano builds it may not really be your cup of tea. If instead you're looking for a simple char, that can easily farm 120 and even 125 spots untwinked, look no further. This guide will cover the basics of each of the four elements, from level 1 to late game ubers. It will not go deep into late-end game stuff like high labs, but it will give you all the tips to level and progress through the game, suggest how to better place your stats and how to gear your char through the various game phases. Since the recent Sigma change on monsters immunities made one-element builds possible, you can now effectively specialize in one type of element without spending much more skill points in a secondary one, since with enough elemental pierce and damage output you can just annihilate everything on screen.
To note: a lot of setups are possible on these builds. We will try to suggest the most efficient and cheapest ones so new players can easily start and go farm their own stuff in order to have the most enjoyable experience without being hardstuck right after the first ubers.
We tried to list sets for the mid game when possible, since especially in multiplayer they are extremely cheap and easy to get in a reasonable amount of time, even at the start of a new ladder. Some of them are also quite very efficient for how cheap they are, and can be a valid option to crafting who may require a bit more time and patience. If a setup is not there, it doesn’t mean it may not work. Feel free to experiment!

III. THE BASICS OF BUILDING A CASTER SORCERESSPIERCE
"-X to enemy Y resistance," also known as pierce for short, is a very important thing to have for all elemental casters. Enemies in Nightmare and Hell have elemental resistances, allowing them to ignore a large part of our spell damage. Therefore, acquiring enough pierce in order to improve our damage is a top priority.
Enemy resistances can be reduced to -100%, effectively doubling our damage output (this double damage isn't reflected on the character screen or the spell tooltip). For sorceress, pierce comes from gear and charms.
Most normal enemies have 35 resists, and bosses, 70. Depending on the purpose there are 3 pierce caps that we are aiming for in end game.
135 pierce for general mobs in Hell difficulty
170 pierce for most Act Bosses, Uber Bosses

To simplify it, you need synergy & spell damage.
-Synergy increases the more Energy and Energy Factor (EF) you have. These two stats have a close relationship: you want to raise both because simply stacking energy, no matter how high, won't do you any good without EF, and vice versa. Thankfully, these 2 stats usually come together on caster gear as well as on charms and jewels.
-Spell Damage Bonus (SD) is found on gear, charms, mystic orbs and various socketables.
Since Synergy and SD are multiplied together, you want to keep them at roughly the same level in order to maximize the outcome. For example, having 500 SD & 300 synergy is worse than having 400 each.
TLDR: Get pierce, get spell damage, get energy and EF.
BREAKPOINTSCast rate aka. faster cast rate (FCR) allows us to cast spells faster. Hit recovery aka. faster hit recovery (FHR) helps us... recover faster from getting hit so we don't get stunlocked.

SPELL DAMAGE BUFFSBesides Firedance, sorceress has access to a lot of skills that boost spell damage. We’ll take a look at some of them and discuss why we choose one.
Blood Fury: Can spawn as a random oskill on crafted sorceress orbs. BF buffs all elemental damage by a large amount. However the duration is a fixed 30 seconds, which cannot be increased by
% Bonus to Buff/Debuff/Cold Skill Duration. Drains 50% life in 30 seconds. Easily countered by Living Flame. Strong overall but should be reserved for boss fights so as to not clutter general gameplay with unnecessary switching. Imagine switching gear every 30s just to farm. Nice duration.

. Bloodbond sucks fuzzy balls so don’t use it. You can actually put Night’s Embrace on a Shapeshifter/Exemplar and it will work decently for farming. Do we recommend it? Not really. But if you have extra gear and nothing better to do, go for it.
Churel: Reworked oskill in 1.5 into a strong buff for cold spells. Spawns on sorc orb and armor. Lasts for 10 seconds (LUL) with an 8 second cooldown (OMEGALUL). Ya know what else also spawns on sorc orb, is just as strong, and lasts 30s? That’s right, Blood Fury. So if you want to use this, you’ll have to hope that it spawns on your crafted armor, on top of other important affixes that you hope for.
“Is it strong?” -Yes.
“Is it good?” -Does recasting a buff every 8s sound good?
“Should I use it?” -Are you feeling okay?
Elemental Totem: Another buff that only spawns on sorc orbs for us. It’s actually pretty good but you need a corpse to summon it, so you either have to keep summoning it after clearing every pack, or teleport constantly to bring it with you. Why even bother. Just use Blood Fury or Bloodlust.
Mark of the Wild: The only way to get this buff is by using a barb mercenary. But the bonus is extremely negligible so don’t bother.

set. Slowly drains 100% life in 30 seconds. Easily countered by Living Flame. You can actually have both Blood Fury and Raven Heart active at the same time and still regen hp if you max Living Flame. Only buff cold spells but by a significant amount. Only lasts 30s but it’s built in the set so you don’t have to switch gear. Highly recommended if playing cold sorc.
TL;DR: Use Bloodlust on Shamanka/Circe (Xis) on switch for farming. Blood Fury for bosses if you don't mind the short duration. If using the cold set, do use Raven Heart.
Tips: Eat an apple before a boss fight with Circe Xis equipped to get +3 to all skills. This buff persists after unequipping the orb.
STAVES VS ORBSStaves can roll up to: 11 sorc skills, 150 EF, 70 spell damage and 25 pierce with 6 sockets. Staves also have 1 frame faster cast speed compared to orbs.
Jared’s Stone can roll up to: +5 sorc skills, 100 EF, 50 spell damage and 25 pierce with 3 sockets.
Orbs roll lower stats overall compared to staves, but you have the ability to use a shield. Adding in a shield, such as Avatar or Celestial Barrier and you’ll have more pierce, plus 6 more sockets to work with crafted jewels, or even more pierce runes if you still need pierce.
Staves on the other hand, has a lot of power packed into a single item that you have to worry about. They also have better cast frames, which means more dmg overall, but in late game setups, they can be beaten by an orb & shield combo.
We recommend War Staff (6 sockets) for crafting in mid game if you don’t have any good shield or don’t yet have enough crystals to craft jewels. This will save you shrines to work on Gambeson for example.
IV. OVERVIEW OF SORCERESS SKILLS► Show Spoiler
FIRE TREE
Flamefront: Releases multiple exploding fireballs in target direction. This will be your main damage dealer skill for the Fire tree in order to farm and clear packs. Number of bolts scales with level so always max this skill.
Living Flame: Great passive that regenerates and increases your max life. Early on, this will be your main source of life regen until Witch Blood. Maximum life increases for every base point put into it, so always max this skill.
Flamestrike: Pillar of flame that descends upon target dealing massive amounts of fire damage. Even as a 1 pointer, this skill with deal insane damage to stationary targets. Probably the best single target skill in Caster Sorc arsenal after Abyss.
Firedance: creates a circle of flames that increases your spell damage when you cast other spells within it. Early on, you will not really need this skill, but in the endgame it will be a great tool to further boost your damage. Cooldown decreases with base points spent into the skill, to the point of 0 secs. Max this skill in the endgame.
COLD TREE
Frigid Sphere: releases a frozen orb that explodes on target dealing massive amounts of cold damage in a small aoe radius. Coupled with Shatter the Flesh, this will be your main damage skill in the cold tree for farming and clearing mobs. Also, every base point into Sphere boosts your Ice Elemental’s hp by 15%, which is really great in early game for more safety. Max this skill.
Shatter The Flesh: cast on a corpse to detonate it, dealing a great amount of cold damage and freezing targets in a small aoe for 0.8 seconds. We make use of this skill as a sweet crowd control tool. Every point put into this skill gives 15% more physical damage to your Ice Balls, but we don’t use it as our main damage dealer, so 1 point is enough.
Snow Queen: passive that increases defense and maximum health. Super useful skill. 15 points are enough to reach the 30% max health cap, but you may want to max this if you got with Light as primary or secondary tree, as it works wonders with Warp Armor. Note that your Ice Elementals will inherit this passive and its effects.
Abyss: unleash a frozen orb with a spiral of frost circling around it. While early on we will not make use of it, this will be our main skill for farming game bosses. Its mechanics may seem a bit awkward at first. Be sure to place the orb in order that the multihitting swirls actually touch the target to maximize your damage. 1 point early, Max later in bosses skill setup.
Ice Elementals: summon ice spirits with a frost aura that will give you several benefits. Every time you’re in their range, Elemental’s aura will give you 20% total defense, add 5% to your maximum cold resist, and convert 25% of your minion damag to cold spell damage. Every 2 points into the skill, you will be able to summon one additional ice ball, to a maximum of 5. Early on, you can Max this skill as will be a great boost to your overall safety. Later, you can leave it at 8 points to reach max summons number. Note that the Elementals get all bonuses from all your passives.
LIGHT TREE
Forked Lightning: on cast, releases multiple lightning bolts that travel the screen dealing damage to anything in between. This will be your main damage dealer skill for Lightning tree. You will also get 1 additional bolt every 6 points spent into the skill. Max this
Thunderstone: throws a rock that explodes into light bolts. Your single target skill of choice in the tree. You can leave it as a 1-pointer.
Tempest: on cast, releases light bolts in target(s) direction. This is another option for your main damage skill. In general, Forked Lightning is safer to use, but Tempest will be better in places where aiming skills are not the best options, or where you need to deliver fast damage before stuff kills you, like Tran Athulua or Fauztinville. Early on, leave it at 1 point.
Warp Armor: awesome passive that will increase your defense and give you a small chance to avoid damage. Avoid chance scales by 1% every 2 base levels, so always Max this skill.
Nova Charge: buff that periodically releases novas towards nearby enemies. Useful early on for more damage, falls off later. 1 point.
POISON TREE
Vengeful Power: passive that gives you maximum life, damage reduced and crushes attackers when you’re struck. 10 points in this skill will be enough to reach the 20% dr cap.
Arachnomancy: burst spiders on the target enemy. Despite having a small aoe and being our single target damage spell, we will also use this for clearing packs because Lorenado is still really awkward to use. Max this.
ARCANE SKILLS
Mana Shield: your innate skill. When active, redirects 25% of the direct damage you take on your mana instead of your life. Always useful and cooldown is pretty long.
Familiar: casts a feline companion with an aura that will boost your energy, your cast speed and the total level of your skills. You will get 1 more cat every 5 base points into the skill and +1 to every skill for every 4 base points. Depending on the setup, you can leave this as a 1 point or Max it.
Mana Sweep: unleashes a stream of arcane power on all enemies on screen, damaging them and stealing mana based on mana lost. 1 point wonder. From level 18 this will be your best friend to suddenly refill your mana orb. Used in combo with Antimass, you can refill both your orbs instantly.
Antimass: on cast, converts all your mana to health. Useful skill if you find yourself in a bad position and with low health. 1 point.
REWARD SKILLS
Witch Blood: your uberskill. Increases your spell damage when above 80% life, boosts your max life, and gives you more life after kill with every base level. Max this. Requires Twilight Havoc as a prerequisite.
Symbol of Esu: complete the Ennead Challenge to unlock this skill. Upon cubing a health and a mana potion together, creates a moon cookie that instantly refills 50% of your health and gives you 1% of fire/light/cold absorb for every base point put into it. 1 point is enough for most setups.
Force Blast: your Black Road Challenge skill. Unleashes a nova that knockbacks enemies and reduces their damage and cast speed. Pretty high mana cost but really useful tool for more squishy builds. 1 point.
V. FIRE SORCERESS
INTRODUCTIONThe fire sorceress is a powerful caster who excels in both farming and boss killing. Simple to build and play, fire is a great spec for anyone looking to play caster sorceress.
We will use Flamefront as our main skill for the majority of the game. Flamefront offers great clearing power early on as well as late game when you have access to

. For single target, Flamestrike has very high dps on top of having no trajectory, allowing us to “snipe” a target from afar without hitting anything in the way. This is very useful in some fights where hitting an unwanted target can make things difficult.
For our support tree, in early game, the cold tree offers the most defensive capability in Snow Queen and Ice Elementals, which make the leveling experience really smooth. Later on, Vengeful Power on the poison tree gives us the much needed physical resist as well as some %life to survive the harsh environments of Sanctuary for a low amount of investment.

We will use Flamefront to clear maps, Flamestrike for bosses and Ice Elementals to tank for us. Early on there aren't that many skills to spend points on, so max the main skills first then dump the rest in Flamestrike and Frigid Sphere. Even at 1 point, Flamestrike is still very potent as a single target skill. Firedance is a strong buff but not necessary this early.

In Nightmare, keep an eye out for an Ohm rune or higher to make the Ohm staff. You’re gonna use it until level 100 then switch to Elverfolk. At this stage, start upgrading your gear as much as you can for better resists and damage.
General gameplay is simple: Summon Familiars and Ice Elementals. Hold mouse click to melt things with Flamefront. For tanky bosses, cast Firedance and melt them with Flamestrike while your minions hold them in place. When you run out of mana, quickly cast Mana Sweep next to some enemies to instantly refill the mana orb.

Skill plan is generally the same as early game. However, we will shift points from Frigid Sphere to Flamestrike to boost our single target damage. In mid game, with a few charms and mana regen MOs, we don't really need Mana Sweep for general clearing. Still if you're having trouble with mana upkeep, put 1 point in Mana Sweep. At level 115, we have access to Force Blast, a powerful debuff that we will put in our skill rotation for hard-hitting ubers.

VI. COLD SORCERESS
INTRODUCTIONCold Sorceress is a newbie friendly build that relies on spamming a small AoE damage spell (Frigid Sphere) and an AoE crowd control spell (Shatter the Flesh) to clear screens quickly. Snow Queen passive, Ice Elementals and Arcane Spells will help alleviate our fragility. Just remember to play safe behind your minions and not overextend because it doesn't take long to die if you find yourself in a bad spot. Smooth clearing speed aside, the same can be said for single target damage. Fire and Cold trees carry insane single target spells in Flamestrike and Abyss. While the first is pretty simple and intuitive to use and will be best against immobile enemies, the latter will take a bit more practice to get used to, but if played correctly its damage potential is simply outstanding, especially after the buffs received in 1.5.
As previously stated, Frigid Sphere will be our main spell in early game and will give more life to our Ice Elementals thanks to its skill synergy. Combined with shatter the flesh for more AoE and Flamestrike for single target damage, we'll have great firepower in our arsenal. For safety, Snow Queen and Living Flame passives will gift us with more hp and life regen until Witch Blood’s life after kill starts to kick in. Mana Sweep and Antimass will be awesome 1-pointers to recover precious mana and life in possibly harsh situations, especially the latter until we can have access to Symbol of Esu. Finally, Ice Elementals will form our frontline, while Firedance will provide some boost for our spell damage even early with a little bit of cooldown.

Summon Familiars, Ice Elementals. Cast Frigid Sphere to kill monsters, then Shatter the Flesh on corpses to spread more damage and freeze targets that are still alive. For mid game, Cold Sorc is budget queen. Once you collect Zann Esu’s set, you can basically start farming every main place up to level 125, including Fauzt and Bremm. Full set will give us HUGE defensive bonuses: 50% physical resist is nothing to laugh at. Together with our passives, our defense will skyrocket. All this with a nice amount of %minion life for our elementals, close to 20% avoid thanks to Warp Armor, we will be really safe while we spam our main skill and delete entire screens easily.
Summon Familiars then Ice Elementals. Buff with Blood Fury, Ravenheart oskill and Mana Shield innate skill. To kill monsters, you can actually choose between Ice Bolt Nova oskill given by set, or our beloved Frigid Sphere. Personally, nova feels faster for farming, but it's lackluster vs absorbs, against which FSphere deals more damage. Use Forceblast to reduce incoming damage when you approach packs and Shatter the Flesh on corpses to spread more damage and freeze targets that are still alive.
We will also start to switch to Abyss as our main boss killer. Abyss is a bit tricky to use but deals an absurd amount of damage if aimed properly. Apart from poison, no other skill comes close to the sheer DPS potential of this skill. Same as early game, use Mana Sweep and Antimass to refill both your mana and life orb.

For farming setup, playstyle will be the same one used in mid game section. Buff with Blood Fury and Mana Shield, summon your Ice Elementals and Familiar, then proceed to kill packs with the combination of Frigid Sphere + Shatter the Flesh, using Forceblast to keep incoming damage in check. Mana Sweep and Moon Cookies again will cover your mana and health needs.
For bosses setup, it’s time for us to make use of one of the best single target skills: Abyss. While for early game Frigid Sphere covers all damage needs and it’s simply easier to use, Abyss is a bit trickier, but its damage output is simply outstanding on a target that stands on its swirls. While spamming it makes for an easier chance to hit, it’s better to understand how it works in order to use it more wisely. Damage is dealt by the rotating swirl around the orb, so to aim it properly, you have to cast it near and not directly on your target.
