It's a physical damage spell, it doesn't carry weapon damage. I've noticed what you're talking about, but it just hits many times in the novas I think. I use that axe for a lot of builds early on. Treewarden, holy melee paladin, barb, etc.
Was playing MXL for a long time. Even now discovery something new. Switched to MXL 2018, old char treedruid 120 level. Made some ubers, but feels like damage is lacking. Then decide to change gloves to TU light gauntlets - visegrip, and it was aweeeeeesoooome, it absolutly hilarious. It cuts all armour of enemy to 0 in seconds, so you even dont need AR. Speedkilling stuff, recomend on all melee builds, ALL. Of course on 2018 version only. Now i understand why it was removed, its tooooo powerfull
