You can get it in both ways. Any jewelcraft is fine
I'm playing a unholy melee paladin and I just fall over as soon as I enter D Fauzt. I have 300k def and 50% dr. I am only missing like 4 charms and my gear is crafted/su. What can I do?

Perhaps you need more def, DR, +life and FHR.
I don't know much about Paladin, but I'm playing a melee Sorc with 700k def, max breakpoint for IAS and FBR, nearly max for FHR with many +Life on attack, Life after kill/stolen per hit; and I'm able to farm D-Fauzt /players 8 even though my DR is quite low.
My gears at that time: 3 runewords (level 100), 3 SUs, only 1 crafted, full MO/sockets.

Well unholy melee is always something else, you have a big problem of getting hitlocked to death. Since fautz is a really dense place, i recommend to check your fhr breakpoints and if you fall short, farm some cycle of speeds on triune. Definetely farm/buy a malthael's ward for doubled terror strike duration. Dont forget to buff time to time and you are good to go. When you find a qor, make a malakbel and then try to have only ur sword as crafted.
