Yea at this point its just better for you to get a feel of the game. Some quest rewards are unique jewels that are build enablers, for instance theres one that converts all strength nodes in its radius into dex if you open a jewel socket in the middle of the nodes, another one gives you more projectiles if you use Molten Strike, so more dps since damage calculation is based on the amount of projectiles and splash damage (think its name is Wildfire, a must if you spec into Molten strike) ; as for the skill gems themselves they get xp from every kill, but you also have to be careful about not overleveling them if you have gear on affecting stats that youre planning on removing later on, like str/dex bug on D2. Yes , more sockets means you can add more support gems into a skill in it, support gems change the skill in some way, could be more projectiles, more aoe, could be spell echo that makes you cast an additional spell for the cost of one, etc. The higher the item's ilvl the more sockets it can get to max sockets as well as its affixes (just like diablo and i guess pretty much every arpg). Sockets can have white colour (universal colour) if you Vaal Orb them. Ofc Vaaling an item can brick that item into uselessness , or it can give it unique implicit Vaal mods. And if youre wondering about the Corrupted mod you can see on some items it just means you cant change it in any way, cant link sockets cant change socket colours , cant reroll it.
You can go back using the waypoints at towns or at areas, theres act tabs above the map, so you can go back anytime you want. Also, if you want to reset an area to keep farming it instead of waiting out the timer hold CTRL and click the area or the entrance to that area and click on New.
Those encounters are part of the Betrayal league, it doesnt really matter much if you fail or not since the league is ending so dont mind much if you fail it, though it could be good xp if you kill the lieutenants ofc. You defeat a lieutenant, you can interrogate to fill the bar under another lieutenant's hideout, or you can execute him to clear him off the board completely or bargain with him or make him betray another lieutenant to make them rivals, so next time they ambush you together they wont be as OP because rivalries...stuff like that. This gimmick will be core in the next league though so its not like it'll disappear forever.
