Pretty generic. Are you using D2SE? the launcher? or perhaps neither?
Also you're talking plural so are these errors occurring in the same place or with the same actions?

I doubt that you can change the stats on the item - I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but one way might be that you can offset it with MOs (on armour) that give +40 life regen each so you need about 6-7 to counter the drain effect on the weapon.

You can also eat an apple to get rid of the effect or use some other source or life regeneration

Drain life -250 doesn't mean 250 life per second. If you put it on you probably won't even notice it.
