My question is - why is it such a rare attribute? Why not make it a regular thing like physical resist is? To compensate you can add back the magic pierce to ubers that had it like witch. It just seems so odd seeing the attribute next to the other resistances in the character screen. Like, I have 80+% of each element and 50% pr and below it magic res is at 0%. You would think to do something about it but you can't.

Magic dmg is balanced around players and enemies having 0% magic resist. Implementing it as a regular resist would need you to rebalance everything for that, with more or less the same results

Also there are very few and specific sources of relevant magic dmg in the game, like Dunc barrels, witch Uber, etc. Even if you implemented more sources of magic resist it would be so niche that the stat would be almost irrelevant in 99% of situations.

This. Also the only uber that I think it would be worth having a bit of it is Witch. And she pierces magic resistance so stacking HP is the only way around that. It helps on Kabraxis, but dodging Balefires ain't hard at proper distancing.

Also also, some game mechanics are made to force you to vary your strategies. In duncraig for example, barrels can kill you even when absurdly overgeared for the stage. This is done to make you actually look at the screen and move/dodge. If you could just stack magic resist, you could just blindly run around facerolling the barrels, which is not the intended Gameplay for that stage. Magic dmg is a game mechanic intentionally made to be extremely hard to mitigate in order to force players into playstyles that don't involve just running around casting your skill or eternally holding right click if you are melee. Other examples of this are the lightwells in the library of fate, nukes and landmines in vizjun, etc.
