If you update the patch, you will keep characters and they will be updated. For big changes like the necro, you might want to respec. As far as items go, if they get changed I believe the ones you already have won't, but I'm not too sure of that myself, I forgot how it works.

He would not be very good at Sigma, at high level, you can rarely freeze any monster because they are immune to it.
If you want Slow Control, try Fighter Mage, he got Time field that slow everything.
And Void runeword with 33% slow is working at it best already.

oic, im already fine with my build tbh just though it would be a nice tool, not needing to devote the entire build/item around it but just a merc option was quite amazing ^^
