Hardcore characters will now be converted to Softcore upon death - really?! What is the point?!

So you can keep playing your character. If for whatever circumstance one could regards as unfair or out of his/her direct control the character played dies, then you could continue your adventure in SC... or if you've found an extremely rare combo of items that enables a particular way of playing that make you enjoy your time more, then you might feel less bummed out once you can resume it in SC. There are as many points as one's willing to find. If you want to keep true to the HC premises you've followed till now you can always delete the character once you die.

I don't see how that's a contradiction. You still have only 1 life in hardcore.

That's exactly what happens after death. You play on SC. Of course, you always can choose not to do that, but that's something each person can choose for themselves.

The main part is that your progress isn't lost. If you die in fauztinville for example, but still haven't achieved everything you wanted with that character, your progression is still safe. It's a plus for everyone and it doesn't affect those who want to play HC only.

It's unclear what point you're actually trying to make, but anyway...

- for HC players the change doesnt offer much except having a sandbox char. I'm sure many would go as far as insta-deleting the sc char after death.
- for SC players, this change offers the possibility to see what HC playstyle has to offer, "for free".

so at the end of the day HC crew gets more friends to play with and SC players get to try something new they may like.

You can't take a SC char to HC. If your HC char dies and becomes SC, it is kicked from HC forever.
