Single rune runewords
Many runewords contain only one rune, but you can fill up the sockets before the rune with jewels. To make a runeword in an item with 4 sockets, for example, you must insert 3 jewels + 1 rune.
Grey items only!
Some people do not seem to know this. You can only make runewords in nonmagical socketed (grey) items!

Don't worry about your rune, normal runes are pretty common in Median XL. You can also upgrade and downgrade runes, so it's even easier to get the one you want.
There is a recipe to unsocket it, but it's not worth the hassle. You need 3 perfect gems to do it.
No, Median XL has its own runewords, you can't use the D2 ones.

vendors sell oil of disjunction - cube it with any item to remove sockets and retrieve runes (except xis runes)
And no old RW don't work.
