Holy Caster Paladin, the Glasscannon Caster!





Patch 2.0


Patch 2.0 brought a big rework to holy caster paladin, no more Frozen Breath and painfully trying to balance a bit of both fire and cold so you can clear OK while maintaining a good singletarget. The damage we deal is a bit overtuned right now, so expect a nerf in 2.1.

PREFACE


This guide expects you to have some experience playing the game, especially glasscannony casters. If you run into any problems, please ask in Median XL Discord #general or #new-players, as you’ll likely get the answer faster than posting here.

As of patch 2.0, holy caster is a great season starter who struggles a bit in early midgame but shines brightly after. Trading for items can be seen as a necessity, since our initial endgame gear contains 6 set pieces (4 piece Hadriel, 2 piece Yaerius) instead of the normal 4 pieces you'd normally run. Keep in mind that this build ultimately is a glasscannon caster with a very strong turret at their disposal, so use that to your advantage on ubers and clearing.

Our gear mainly takes a lot of strength and dexterity, so those should be prioritised somewhat heavily, until we start getting a ton of attributes from uber charms and Dragon’s Blessing reward skill levels.

BASICS


It is crucial that in this build you never go low on mana. If you do, it butchers the current mana scaling on both Dragon Jaws and Annihilation.

We stack a lot of pmsd, so our Annihilation hydras get more projectiles and bigger splash. We slap those down when clearing on a 5 second cooldown timer and use Dragon Jaws as filler to get some sustain. It is really important that you get enough gold for mana regen mystic orbs as soon as you can while leveling. It is also highly important that you keep an eye out for your physical/magical spell damage as you gear up in the midgame, as getting just a little bit more of it might end up giving you an extra projectile on Annihilation.

Prioritise 50% of your attributes to energy, 30% to strength and 20% to dexterity while leveling. That means you can wear the majority of your gear later on. Once you start getting your 115-125 charms, you can respec a lot of strength and dexterity away.

Add to your D2stats filter:
"(Heraldic|Aerin) Shield" sacred rare

When one drops as rare, shrinecraft a shield similar to this with ANY shrine that you get. It doesn't matter what you use or what you get, as long as it has that Level 1 Bear Stance modifier.

Pierce/-enemy elemental resistance


Since annihilation is classified as a trap, -enemy elemental resistance from gear/charms won't work with it at all.

Dragon's Breath curse?


Despite being labeled as a curse, Dragon's Breath is actually a debuff that you can apply to lab monsters that are immune to curses.

Butcher Video: Dodge fire waves from altars and keep hydras/summons on Butcher. ezpz.

Infernal Machine: Can be RNG where it spawns; if it’s in the middle of the room, you’re in for a tough one. Summon before going in, slap down hydras whenever you can as near the boss as you can and keep those some up.

Isle of the Sunless Sea: Due to the glasscannony nature of our build and no Blessed Life, we need to summon minions in front of us and then hydra. You want to farm this a bit for the mystic orbs.

Invasion Video: Dodge what you can and keep hydras on boss til it does. Perfect Ambers can help if you struggle surviving.

Death Projector: The usual. Solar Flare + Hydra until boss is dead. Run around him to dodge the spiral lightning.

Binding of Baal: Clear everything and then hydra Tal Rasha to death.

Jitan: Summons in front, hydra after. Go slowly.

Akarat: This should literally blow up under all your might.

Inquisitor of Triune Video: Kill the nest, kill the Inquisitor in that order. Leave later if feels too hard at 110.

Bull Prince Rodeo Video: Use summons to keep Bull Prince occupied and cast hydras/djaw from distance.

Black Road Video: Cast summons and hydra in the fire circle and wait. You should get this as soon as you can, because it helps out our survivability by a lot.

Tran Athulua: This is a dangerous uber for us, at least before the set and Black Road charm. You want a max roll charm if possible.

Legacy of Blood Video: Summons before you go in, kill nearby blood golems. Trophy can be big for us, but can be run later when you get silly damage.

Kurast 3000 BA: Ideal place to keep Dragonbone Armor up. Keep summons up, cast Annihilation towers, watch out for hawks etc.

Rathma Square: Summon before going in, walk towards bottom left corner, kill stuff and move slowly.

Heart of Sin: Summons up, get to boss, solar flare + annihilation and dance around the arena while recasting flare+annihilation. Run for trophy when you can.

High Heavens: Get a high attribute, as high exp as you can. Fairly easy for us, same strategy as Kurast.

Invasion II Video: Same deal as Invasion 1, but with added mechanic of cold circles. Stand in them to avoid the fire damage aura Riftwalker has. Dodge lightning circles, keep hydras on boss. If you struggle surviving, I suggest doing this after Judgment Day, for that sweet lightning absorb.

The Veiled Prophet: Summon before going in, stay at entrance until lightning stops, hydra at the tower that shoots them then move in once lightning stops and the tower dies.

Judgment Day: Summon before going in, left portal first, solar flare, run up steps, blink forward and move back a bit to let summons tank and keep Hydra on top of Malthael. Grab charm, run to the other portal, blink from about halfway of the bridge to Imperius. Same deal, keep summons on edyrems and hydra on Imperius.

Quov Tsin: Don’t bother with summons, just run around and keep Annihilation on QT.

Twin Seas: Summon before using the scroll. Solar flare and Annihilation when needed and keep those summons up. Make sure to have a TP up in case she happens to burst you.

Kingdom of Shadows Video: I recommend getting Hadriel-set before attempting this uber, since it gives a lot of defense. Basically buff yourself up with Spark of Hope, run normally until you make it to the tight corridor/bridge and then use summons to juke enemies out of your way until you make it to the boss. Fairly easy to die on this uber so need to know where to go.

Banisher of Light Video: Don’t use summons, run around him in circles. If you find a poison res shrine, this is basically a free boss. Keep vindicate up for extra healing. Perfect turquoise can help. Get the greater gems while you’re here.

Baal Video: No summons again, the usual. Drag him around in straight lines so hydra can hit, dodging the skills as need be. Use dragonbone armor if too many minions spawn, but ideally you shouldn’t spawn any.

Duncraig Video: Keep hydras ahead, use Dragon Jaws and Dragonbone Armor here. Hopefully you have enough PMSD at this point to put most of the enemies here in hit recovery to let your Annihilation finish them off.

Triune: Life/mana or energy cycles early on. Same-ish strat as Duncraig.

Xazax: No summons for this one. Cast hydras slightly behind Xazax so that they only target him and not the Penitents.

Astrogha: This one I recommend you to bruteforce. Basically you might kill his totems and they will heal him, but hopefully with enough damage, you will outdamage the heal.

Viz-jun: Get waypoint first on the opposite end of the map. Keep summons and Annihilation up ahead of you. You will be super squishy in TUs, but this is still easily doable. From waypoint, head south with Assur ring on, get to the boss, purify, grab charm. This is one you’ll farm over and over, we want near max str/vit/eng, and the trophy adds 15 all.

Toraja: Work your way over to the bottom right corner, keep edyrem and summons up, let your Annihilation splash kill anything that’s vulnerable, lure out Lilith, cast Annihilation and edyrem on top of her. Clear for safety and grab charm.

Lord of Lies: Summons up until boss and stop using them on Belial himself. In lesser gear focus each clone down and then focus the rat. In better gear just go for rat and let splash kill anything close. Aim for 500/250 charm

Fauztinville: Farmable in tus, better off in sets/upped gear. Want some decent mf to hopefully find a fire hydra.

Bremmtown: Keep summons up ahead of you, in TUs use Annihilation to clear, keep Dragonbone Armor up, Dragon Jaws when you have time. Shouldn’t be an issue to get to boss and kill in time. Aim for high roll charm (150/75). In better gear you can just summon/djaw without much issue.

Uldyssian: Run up to Uldyssian can be harder than uldy himself if you end up getting a super unique mob with fire/magic immunity. Can either grit it out or reroll. Once you get to uldy he is fully TUable within 10 mins easily. Double set gear brings him down to ~5 mins. End game gear even faster than that.

Scosglen Video: Pop your Annihilation, run around while stuff dies. I suggest skipping the Sapling Guards (big trees that cast poison).

Aside from some minor typographic errors, I am digging this guide! Looks like how I built it, with some minor differences and some definite improvements.

I'll be revisiting HCP, so I hope to get some feedback from others who have played it 135+ and see how it holds up and what differences they may have, as I'm curious if a FSD route with Fire Hydra is just vastly superior for farming AND bossing, as I only played up to the point of 125-130ish.

just found this guide for starting from lvl 1 as a 2.0 pala; cuz i watched the cherubim pala guide which is useable from 110.

so - our main dmg skill annihilation has same dmg type pierce included, up to -160%, therefore we only need 39%? more for cap pierce for _all_ content theoretically?

as anni isnt a "minion" which is attackable, it should work "better" than e.g. totems from necro, or other stuff that is killable/counts as summon (e.g. baal hell-> if we use summons, he will summon more minions and so on).

this seems really good, or where is the catch?

my main char is sorc 130sh, and even with whole mid game set and sacred crafted stuff, its not easy to have high pierce; im at around -50%.

it seems that this build is also group-friendly; as we are casting anni and other dmg spells and can also buff our grpmember with spark of hope.
