The Byzantine historian Procopius (c. 500–565) described the Franks and their use of throwing axes:

"...each man carried a sword and shield and an axe. Now the iron head of this weapon was thick and exceedingly sharp on both sides while the wooden handle was very short. And they are accustomed always to throw these axes at one signal in the first charge and thus shatter the shields of the enemy and kill the men."

Description:
Most throwbarb builds in the past have been based around either Rebound or Stampede. In my opinion these skills are not fun and not worth using due to their limitations (requiring a wall to rebound, terrible single target stampeded damage), and don't synergize with each other or anything else in the throw tree. Overkill, however can do it all, and since the release of Sigma, Overkill has become a more viable skill to build around due to

+ Lion Stance. This is a full guide on an Overkill-based thrower that uses defense instead of block, supermaxed Lion Stance, and high damage and is viable for both farming and boss killing.

Pros:
    -Excellent damage
-Doesn't require expensive gear (can clear 85%+ of content with TUs)
    -Fun and involved playstyle
-Overkill mechanics allow for a wide variety of versatile playstyles to attack different content
-If you master the playstyle you can clear zones without getting hit.

Cons:
-Not a "lmb spam" build. You have to stick and move and predict enemy movements to be the most efficient barb possible.
-Some bosses can be difficult because they tend to stay on the edges of a map (Baal is the worst offender here) which messes with the way Overkill hits them, but this is the same thing for other barb multihit skills like stormblast. I've added tactics suggestions later on in the guide to deal with this.
-Highly reliant on life steal. This build has some of the highest purely physical damage of any build. This means two things - If you don't have life steal you will have a tough time killing bosses without chugging health pots and playing defensively. On the other hand, if you can get 50% life steal or more and keep hitting mobs you're nearly immortal.

Strategy:
The Skill- Overkill is a very interesting skill that is often misunderstood. It fires a set number of axes (determined by hard points in Overkill) into a 10-15 yard diameter circle. This skill has no next hit delay, which means it can and does multihit and is just as good at single target damage as well as groups of mobs.
Some finer points on how to use Overkill- You can't just spam this by left clicking mobs like other builds do. Or you can, but you'll suck and hate it - the reason why is because Overkill has a travel time (the time when the axes are in the air but haven't done damage yet) and if you just click mobs, especially far away mobs, the axes will hit ground and won't do anything. The way I've found is the best way to use it is to simply hold down your left mouse button while running, and when you encounter mobs you simply press shift and move the mouse to just a few yards in front of them, and when the axes fall they'll be hit dead on. This takes a bit of practice but it is by far the most efficient way to do this.
Edge spam - This is where you throw a few Overkills to the edge of your screen and slowly advance forward, throw some more, go forward, etc. You can do this in dangerous areas to lay down fire before the mobs get in range of you. It is an effective way to clear areas that reduces risk.
Herd and kite - This is a very effective and efficient way to clear zones where there is very little risk to you, such as Duncraig. Just pick up a large group of mobs, throw a few Overkills at yourself, and kite the mobs so that they get hit by the axes as they run towards you.
Titan Strike - Use it, even though you're ranged Keep this up 100% of the time for the extra damage, defense, and attack rating.

Leveling:
Early game (lvls 1-50 or normal)-
DON'T USE OVERKILL YET. This will sound strange but once you know how Overkill works you will know. Essentially, the number of hard points in Overkill determines how many axes are thrown with every attack. However, the diameter of the area of effect is the same regardless of level (at least as far as I've found) this means that if you're only throwing 10-20 axes in a 10-15 yard diameter circle, you aren't doing much damage and burning through mana. As far as 1-50 goes, use stampede.

Set is pretty decent here too and you can try using it until you get top-level gear. It has solid all-around stats but isn't exceptional in anything and has low life steal. I haven't used it personally but the stats are solid and there's no reason it wouldn't work. If you do decide to use it I suggest using MOs to compensate for the set's weaknesses.

synergize incredibly well and I highly suggest using them instead of the alternatives. The reason why is the double bearclaw proc. If you use it you will notice that you become an auto-turret when you use multi-hitting abilities like Overkill. This allows you to throw a few Overkill into the air, run forward, and while you're running and get into the range of mobs the proc will continuously go off and will pick off the stragglers that Overkill doesn't hit and life leech in case you take damage. This works very, very well for both bosses and groups of mobs, and the more mobs the better it works.

Stats:
Strength - Remaining points once you have enough dex and vit.
Dexterity - Enough to hit stuff. At 120 this usually equates to about 28-30K AR, after Titan Strike buff.
Vitality - Enough for a decent amount of health, usually 14-16k.
Energy - None.

Skills:
Throw Tree:
    Bear Claw- 1
    Stampede- 1
    Rebound- 1
Screaming Eagle-1 (you could try putting points into this skill if you feel you need it for certain bosses, but leave it at 1 otherwise or for farming).
Overkill- Max. You absolutely have to max this skill, no questions. Aim for at least 70 axes, but the more the better.
Special Tree:
    Wolf Companion- 1
    Ancient Blood- 20-24
Fortress- 1 (this locks you out of using ranged skills so you can pretty much ignore using Fortress)
    Spirit Guide- 1
Mountain King- 1-5, depending on your stat needs

There's some options here. I've found that supermaxing Lion Stance with

is the best way personally, but you may also try Wolf Stance with a different gear set up, although it's a massive damage loss despite gaining a ton of CB. Some try maxing both Eagle Stance and Snake Stance and use Rebound as a main skill. I think this is a terribly inefficient playstyle that suffers from dumping points into two stances while only using one (huge waste of points) and using an inferior attack skill.
    Lion Stance- Max
Reward Skills:
    Runemaster- Max
    Immortal- 1
    Thundergod-1
Gladiator tree:
You could try putting 1 point into Daedalus if you need AR, otherwise leave this empty.

Here comes the inevitable question I get when people find out about my build - "Aren't you supposed to use Gladiator's Dominance for throw builds?" My personal opinion is that Runemaster is better. The reason is that Overkill deals a pathetic amount of magic damage and Gladiator's dominance doesn't increase it much, and the amount of dex you need to reach max block (or even 50%) is incredibly high and this forces you to take points out of strength, which gimps your damage. You do get 25% deadly strike which is nice but doesn't overcome the fact that you'd be putting nearly all of your points into dex. The other drawback is that while you do gain block, you lose a metric ton of defense. The difference between 200k and 1 million defense is a world apart. So in conclusion, the block and deadly strike from Gladiator's doesn't make up for the loss of strength and defense. I will appreciate any input on this from other barbs who have used this with BIS gear because I suspect that it may be viable once you have everything maxed out, but I've yet to see any benefit.

In the end, you should be aiming for 20k+ buffed Overkill tooltip damage. This will allow you to leech well and kill stuff quickly. Additionally, you should aim for at the very least 800k-1 million defense, all max res, 15k+ hp, etc.
Breakpoints - I highly suggest hitting at least 4 frame FHR breakpoint (86 FHR) and if you are having trouble getting stunlocked you can go for 3 frame FHR (200) but I don't suggest it because it will affect the quality of your other stats and if you're playing tactically you shouldn't be getting stunlocked anyway, or being hit much at all.

Mercenary:
Doesn't matter too much what you decide to equip him with unless you're going to spend hundreds of TG to equip him to the point where he doesn't die. I suggest just stuffing him with honorifics and TUs and giving him as much leech as you can and use him as a distraction. A5 barb is a perennial good choice, especially for ranged toons. Act 2 exemplar is also a good option. Get as much slow on mercs as you can as this will help him not get instantly pancaked.

End Game Strategy:
There are many guides and miniguides on how to kill the uber bosses, but I figured I'd add some strategy from a throwbarb perspective on the early ones to get you going and help you out get some charms to start tackling the end game content. This isn't an exhaustive list, nor a very complete one, but it's enough to get you prepared to tackle them on your own.

Challenges-
Level Challenge (lvl 55-59) - Make sure your defense is high. It's easy enough as long as your defense and life isn't too low. Do this at lvl 55-59. Kill all 3 bosses, get charm.
Ennead Challenge (lvl <80) - This one can be a bit tricky without the option of Bear Stance. Just keep mobile and make sure you have good defense.
Lvl 105-
Butcher - Enter the house, shoot a few Overkills, collect charm. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
Infernal Machine - Same as butcher. The summons only help you because you will become a machine gun of bear claw procs. Throw axe, collect charm, drink beer to celebrate.
Death Projector - Also easy - avoid lazer, spam Overkill, and it'll drop fast.
Island of the Sunless Sea - This one gives you a chance to practice edge-spamming Overkills - just throw overkills in front of you as you advance and you'll see gold drop like it's da club and someone's letting it rain with the dolla dolla bills.

Lvl 110-
Assault on Mount Arreat- Stay on the edges to avoid getting stun locked. Use the "edge-spam" strategy I described above.
The Binding of Baal- Same thing here. These guys can obliterate you so just stay on the edges and wipe them out.
Horazon's Sanctum- This one is a lot easier than it used to be. Throw axe, collect charm, celebrate with a finely-aged wine.
Torajan Jungles- Shouldn't have a problem here if you are even remotely awake. Just edge-spam and watch out for bosses.
Akarat- Just run right up to him and throw a few overkills. Your damage will wipe out the followers and vaporise him.
Lord Aldric Jitan- This fight is a defense check. Make sure you have at least 750k defense here and take it slow. Peel the soldiers out and move your way to the boss.
The Secret Cow Level- Throw axes at cows. Wait, am I back on the farm?

Lvl 115-
High Heavens- Stay out of LOS of the punisher spamming towers and you'll be fine. This is a physical damage zone so your defense wins the day. Throw axe, collect charm, celebrate with vodka.
Tran Athulua- Don't run straight out into the middle of a crowd of amazons and you'll be fine.
Black Road- Run into center of circle, obliterate Buyard, and thank the devs that pre-sigma Black Road Challenge is gone.
Legacy of Blood- Bring an act 5 merc with some gear. Let him engage, have him soak up a few hits while spamming Overkill on Bartuc, and he should drop in a second or three.
Bull Prince Rodeo- No real strategy here, just keep Rodeo from the edge of maps and keep spamming those axes. You might die a couple of times to the cow kamikazes but just whittle away at him.
Rathma Square- This one is very easy. Literally just run right to Primus and show him who's boss. Nothing here can endanger you if your gear isn't blue.
The Veiled Prophet- Teleport right next to ball, axe it, wipe the rest. Don't get swarmed!
Heart of Sin- Kite in a circle. Make sure you have good fire res. Stick and move. Don't stand still.

Lvl 120-
Teganze- This one is kind of annoying, but not too bad. The trick is to hit and move. It takes a while to understand how the Umbaru Spirits behave, but basically once you get close enough they decide not to use their really powerful magic attacks and instead use their shit physical ones. So if you can get close enough by using a stick-and-move strategy, you can make them go close range and wipe them out. Terul is annoying only because he is immune to physical, so it might take a while for you to kill him. I suggest doing this with a friend who does non-physical damage as it may take you too long to do it yourself.
Duncraig- If you can avoid the barrels exploding near you it's basically trivial. For those who have never been to Dunc before - mobs will throw barrels at you and then light a fuse that you can see coming towards the barrel. They do massive amounts of damage so just make sure to keep moving. The lit fuses will direct you to the location of the barrels so watch out for them. Your defense makes you nearly immortal here so just run right through, take out all 5 mini bosses, and use the Purify skill on the boss twice to take him out.
The Triune- mobility is the name of the game. Move to avoid shower of rocks and tower meteors. Work your way down to Lucion and slowly bring him to Malic. There's excellent video guides that will show this fight much better so I'd suggest that.
Twin Seas- Kethryes is very annoying only because she moves around like a squirrel on crack. She also does a lot of damage. Just keep chugging health potions and keep spamming Overkill, and eventually she drops. Throw axes, collect charm, celebrate with ale and cheese.
Eve of Destruction (Baal)- This is the only fight below 125 that is truly challenging, and only because Baal has a tendency to run towards a wall and stick to it. This is problematic because Overkill needs a good radius to do a lot of damage. Fish him away from the walls to hit him with Overkill. If he spawns an act boss, you can teleport across map to separate them, and you should keep baal on the far side of the map.
Quov Tsin- Do this last in the 120 category, as you get good resistance charms from the other ubers. Get as much +max res and remember to stick and move.
Judgement Day- Pretty easy. Res your merc, use him as a meat shield for a few seconds, spam overkills into Malthael (I suggest killing him, he's easier for us) and his edyrems shouldn't be able to hit you if you stay mobile. If you are trying the challenge, take out Imperius first because his mechanics make him more of a pain in the butt, and if you wipe him you can roll Malthael after. Don't stand still when cubing charm or the adds might wipe you before you do it!
Kabraxis- Our build is the best in the game for killing Kab and other bosses that work like him. He pounces on you if you move away from him, and shoots balefire. You need 3 things- decent movespeed, life steal, and a good amount of health. If you have that, simply run around him in a circle and throw Overkill shots. Don't worry about the skeletons. The first time I looked Kab with this build I didn't need to use a single health potion and you shouldn't either. The elementals are likewise easy if you respec to nephalem uberskill.

In sigma, how you deal with Kabraxis elementals? I mean, you only do phys damage... and in the old versions, you need fire damage to kill fire elemental, and so on...

Also, for the leveling phase, you can begin with 1 skill build. You use your first skill point in Earthquake. Then you invest in Lion Stance... and you continue with that skill until and the reqs like spirit guide, until act 3, when you can begin to use Lion Stance with Overkill. I level in median 1.3 using this technique....

I haven't tried Kab with this build specifically so I'll have to get back to you on that. No build can handle every encounter in the game so I'll try to find a workaround for him specifically, although I have a few good ideas.

As for your second point- it doesn't really matter how you level from 1-50 as Barb, you can do whatever you want. I personally think earthquake sucks and I'd rather use sword or axe skills. Either way you'll have to respec so it's inconsequential.

Well, I think that 1 overkiller barb using nephalem weapons(nephalem spirit, is the same thing) can do almost any encounter...I'm doing that build in median 1.3 : you get high physical and all the main 3 elemental damages (cold, fire and lightning). Average defense from spirit guide, (500k with good gear, but hey, is not so glass cannon). In 1.3 you need different sources for each elemental... but I don't know if the uber still has that condition in Sigma...

Yes that's exactly what I had in mind! You're spot on with that idea.

With a small swap in gear this build can do decent ele damage and I'm going to add a section for this later on for bosses that are highly resistant to physical, like Terul.

Hey just my opinion, like everything else in the guide. You don't have to agree with my opinions but you should try to spread some positivity for once, bud.
