My 500k defense amazon still gets killed sometimes by terror cows... Its because she lacks %DR and hp. Lots of enemies in act 5 have charge clone skills which hit every time.

Weird Hyena, Tomb Snake and Bremmtown mobs hit all the time, the trick is to play strategically. Have mobs, let them tank, use freeze/stun/instakill/ranged.

Also in the bloody foothills and other areas of a5 are those melee dudes that cast rust storm, which reduces your defence massively and slows you down. Also those elite spiders that use the carpet of spiders spell on attack. Thunderbolts throw lightning fury bolts at you with some resistance pierce. Knights of death with their charge attack (always hits) which curse you and remove your gear which you can't get back at the end of the effect until you weapon switch, leaving you vulnerable to others.

What I'm trying to say is basically no monsters "just" auto attack. They usually have an ability attached and your lack of experience/knowledge of those is leading to your confusion. Also because of the high density and attack speed of enemies 5% ctbh != immortality especially in melee. 1 in 20 is not that rare, especially if you have no mitigation & low hp pool and can't tank more than 1-2 hits.

Also what happens often with newer players is that they focus too much on defence and their damage is low, which is equal to longer combat and hence greater chance to take damage.

What character are you playing? Also what items and skills are you using? If you give us a little more info, maybe a screenshot of your stats, we could tell you why you're dying more than expected. Also from my experience Ghost Phoenixes and Detonators deal a huge amount of damage out of nowhere and dont use a melee hit to do so.

I'm not sure, but I think once you are mobbed and the monsters manage to hitlock you or stun you, any more hits will increase the duration of the hitlock/stun? might be bypassing defense if you're hitlocked. can someone confirm/deny?

The hitlock duration is somehow hard to notice manually. When I was doing Quov Tsin in Superbeast morph, his Trinity Beam hitlocked me every now and then (probably the finest place to test this is doing Quov Tsin with unholy pala). So I want to say that if the info you're talking about is true, then the duration is increased by 0,5 sec. or so. When I kept the distance from QT and started moving towards him while his trinity beam was hitting me, sometimes it took me 1 sec. of hitlocking before I could continue moving, sometimes a bit more (1,5 sec or so). Again, it's hard to notice that increased duration.

I mean, I'm not sure if, while you're hitlocked/in hit recovery, monsters have a higher chance to hit you? (since it kinda seems you're unable to defend yourself)

It seems that way, hit lock reduces some of your defensive abilities aka defense, block..
