INTRO/RANT

There seems to be a lot of confusion coming from newer players regarding rolling affixes on their equips. I know you veteran pro players think that we're just lazy to be bothered to read the docs, but honestly, the mechanics of median are vast, broad, and deep. It can be difficult to know where to look or what to look for. And even after reading it in the docs, it can still be confusing.

From the perspective of a player raised on the typical console rpg, where you don't need to know anything about the mechanics, I can personally say the adjustment to median was a difficult one. It's vastly different than the games I'm used to. I found that it's a fantastic mod, though, once I started to get the hang of things.

My apologies for the rant, but I think that the veteran players sometimes take for granted how vast the content must seem to a first time player. As someone still learning the game, it's still kind of fresh in my memory how bewildering it was. Anywho...on to the guide (well, more of mini guide, really).

That being said, I am still learning, so if I make any mistakes here, I'm depending on you veterans to point it out, so I can correct it.

Rolling Your Oskill Miniguide (or item affixes, generally)

Hey, oskills! Cool! I want one of my own! I want to play the Lazydin, but I just can't seem to roll Ring of Light! I want to build my very own tantrumsin, tantrumdin, or tantrum barb, but tantrum just won't show up! What do I do?! Agh!!

Important Numbers

Ok, so first off, there are a few numbers you need to know: item level (ilvl), quality level (qlvl), and affix level (alvl).

Item level, hereafter referred to as ilvl, is determined by by area/monster lvl where it dropped. Or character level (clvl) if it was gambled. It can be viewed by altering the settings in plugy, iirc.

Image

Quality level (qlvl) is determined by the base item and tier level (1-6, sacred). Qlvl, along with other useful things (like max sockets, min max dmg, etc.), can be viewed here: base items.

Image

To find the affix level of your item, you need the ilvl and qlvl and plug it in to the calculator here: prefixes/sufixes. It's the first one from the top.

Image

An Example

So let's tie it all together with an example:

I want to roll Ring of Light on so I can make progress with my lazydin build. Let's assume I picked up a rare rondache, tier 5, with an ilvl of 83.

Image

It's qlvl is 65. Punch it in to the calc and u get an affix level of 67.

Image

Image

As can be seen, above, the required affix level for ring of light to appear is 72. If your items affix level is lower than the required alvl of the affix, then it won't roll. So you won't be seeing RoL on this shield.

At ilvl 99, the affix level is 99 regardless of qlvl, so you could try rolling with a ilvl 99 shield as another strategy.

Rareness of Affixes (frequency)

You might also find that even if your item meets the alvl requirement, that it seems like it's still not rolling. This is where the number listed under frequency comes in. iirc, I heard Rishab mention that the lower the frequency number, the more rare the affix is.

Image

If we look at Ring of light, it's frequency number is 25. Compare this with a much more common affix--Enhanced Defense +(301 to 350)%, which has a freq of 4072.

Image

Clearly, there's a big difference here. But keep at it. So long as you meet the alvl with the right item type, you'll get it eventually.

Groups

There's also a column labeled "group" with a bunch of numbers under it. iirc, i heard it mentioned that only one affix from a particular "group" will roll on an item at a time. oskills, for instance, all seem to be under group 217, meaning that you can only roll one oskill per item.

Image

Other Tips

If your affix level is 48, you could try rolling with the lowest possible affix level on your item that will give you that affix. This will reduce the pool of potential affixes on your item, possibly improving the chance that u'll get what you want.

Do you know the formula for determining the affix that can appear? Because honestly a lower qlvl item can spawn better affixes than a higher qlvl of the same ilvl . To deal with this retardiness i want to plot a graph to delimit zones in which affixes can appear .

My problem was that i only used to craft items or reroll when i reached 120 and usually in tier 6 or sacred items and didn't stumble onto the stupidity . For example an ilvl 72 item of qlvl 1 spawns affixes up to lvl 72 but an ilvl 72 item of qlvl 68 can spawn upto lvl 45 affixes , However if I would have used an item of say ilvl 72 qlvl 40 I could have gotten maximum affix lvl 52 . Seems intuitive

Can it be that rolling rares in median uses the formula for determining affix lvl for crafted items in cLoD or something stupid like that . That is the only thing that comes to mind

You can see the formula in the javascript part of the page:
http://docs.median-xl.com/MXLU_vXVI_Doc ... uffix.html

it's used to filter out affixes according to the data entered. it should help some.

Thansk Quuirinus . I have looked there and that is indeed Blizzard formula used to generate alvl for crafted items there . That made some sense since lvl 66 was the beginning of Hell and affixes were capped by that number .

Ilvl=qLvl is the line with elevation 45 degrees trough the origin . ilvl=99-qlvl/2 is the other line used by the IF's to determine formula and their intersection is at ilvl=qlvl=66 . Around that area alvl generated is 33

The formula then makes ilvl=qlvl when below that line so alvl is independent of ilvl so the growth is going from left to right from qlvl 0 to qlvl 66 reaching alvl 33 in the end then the growth of alvl based on qlvl is quadrupled reaching 99 at qlvl 99.

Above the line the zone is demarcated by the line with equation iLvl=99-qLvl/2 that is a line with elevation -30 degrees

When iLvl<99-qLvl/2 the alvl grows slowly with gradient lines with elevation of 30 degrees . This situation is very defavorable because if you try to get a medium item but you can get a low item like a tier 1 boots with high alvl based just on ilvl

Right in the topmost quadrant the alvl increases on lines parallel with the horizontal and grows with the double of the value of iLvl

I didn't have much time on hand to code something but i made an excel graph . yes i know i am lazy . On X axis is qlvl and Y axis ilvl

Also, you want to use the minimum level item needed to get a desired o-skill. This will cut down on the competing affixes.

how about expanding this thread and write about useful/viable oskills?
like every complete set provides oskills, i have no idea about them, how good are they
so far the only useful oskills i found are amulets' lightning arena/hailstorm, but there must be countless others..

the usefull ones are already included in guides/miniguides . if you don't see them in there , there's a very high chance they are not worth the trouble (there are very very very few out there left that are still waiting to be included into some build/guide ; the rest are crap - mostly because they exist since many years ago and they have not been re-scaled/re-balanced to work good - many of them look good but deal shity damage - in the nowadays patches + it wasn't intended for them to outhine the main skills you can get from character trees ) . you can find the entire list of oskills in the docs -> Characters -> item only skills

you mean, the list of oskills is in Docs -> Items -> Items with Oskills

Docs -> Characters -> Item only skills is quite outdated. The only pro for it is the skill description, but in some cases it's wrong due to changes.

Nice graph, btw. :)
